Eurovision 2021 Automatic Qualifiers

Along with host country the Netherlands, the Big Five — France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom — get an automatic spot in the grand final of Eurovision 2021. They drop a lot of euros, and we thank them for helping keep the contest afloat. We used to roll our eyes at the jokes these nations would send to the contest. But in recent years they have been earning their keep.

Automatic Qualifiers at Eurovision 2021

Italy’s Måneskin are perhaps making the most noise with “Zitti e buoni”. The rock quartet won Italy’s Sanremo in early March, but have since trimmed down and cleaned up their entry to comply with Eurovision rules.

France’s Barbara Pravi is certainly the one that’s most favoured with the bookies. “Voilà” has rested near the top of the odds tables ever since it was selected at the very start of national selection season.

Spain’s Blas Cantó gets deep on “Voy a quedarme” while Germany’s Jendrik is taking a completely different approach with “I Don’t Feel Hate”.

The United Kingdom’s James Newman brings “Embers” which has already lit a spark underneath the British fanbase. The number is completed by the Netherlands’ Jeangu Macrooy. “Birth Of A New Age” sees Jeangu embrace his Surinamese heritage.

But who is YOUR favourite? You can listen to the six automatic qualifiers below and then vote in our poll. You can vote for as many contestants as you like, but you can only vote ONE time, so make it count. This poll closes, just ahead of the first rehearsals in May. It’s up to you, Europe. Start voting now!

France: Barbara Pravi “Voilà”

Germany: Jendrik “I Don’t Feel Hate”

Italy Måneskin “Zitti e buoni”

Netherlands: Jeangu Macrooy “Birth of a New Age”

Spain: Blas Cantó “Voy a quedarme”

United Kingdom: James Newman “Embers”

Who is your favourite automatic qualifier at Euroivison 2021?

This is wrong forum for Italy. Its a song contest, not a screem contest

Juries usually don’t respect rock entries, especially the ones that you cannot understand what they are saying, so I fear that Italy will not have many jury points this year, somewhere like in 2018 I believe, but totally the televoters will elevate them, leaving Finland behind them

I never thought that I would say this but the big 5 is amazing this year. Uk is my favourite this year and Germany is in my top 10 too. Netherlands is really underrated. Spain is really sweet, France and Italy are great too (I’m tasteless)

I haven’t made my final top yet but: 1. France: is probably my winner of the year. Excellent song from the first listen. 2. Germany: Also really liked this. It’s happy and has an interesting structure. Will be in my top 10. 3. Italy: It’s a good song but not really my style. I think it will be in my top 20. 4. Netherlands: I’m not a big fan of the melody of the chorus but the rest of the song is fine. 5. United Kingdom: It’s a decent song but it doesn’t stand out for me. I’ll listen to… Read more »

Because it’s an “ethnic” song, but not in the type of way a lot of Europeans are comfortable with.

italy and france will be far ahead the rest at the jurys!
televoting is more difficult to predict – i think italy most points and france second most and maybe UK at third?
the most important question will be:which kind of music will be prefer this year – the slower stuff or the stuff with more tempo?

Honestly, I kinda think most of them are bringing their A-game. Out of all of them, the one that’s most underwhelming is Spain, and that doesn’t mean that I hate the song. Its just the least interesting out of this group. There is however going to be a new version performed (which isn’t going to be released digitally), so perhaps its best to wait to hear it live. For me, the two clear standouts are Italy and France, with Netherlands, Germany and UK close behind.

Italy sends rock (a genre that is hardly seen in ESC), Netherlands sends a singer who dares to bring a song with lyrics in a creole language and UK sends something you can hear on the radio and not to think it’s from Eurovision.

Germany is just teen pop, France is another ballad, and worst of all, Spain sends a pop singer who brings a ballad. Ballads and teen pop don’t bring anything new to ESC.

Anhel

I don’t think Germany is teen pop. I don’t know what exactly it is, but it’s something worse than teen pop imo.

I support the song because I love listening to it. It’s okay to have a different opinion, but why are you searching for reasons other than “people think it’s a good song”? find it weird to support songs because they are or aren’t a certain genre; because they have a certain message; or because they’re from a certain country. (last two not related to your comment but I’ve seen them A LOT)

UK it’s the type of song that everybody like, and no one hate..or love. So i think it will bottom 5 in the televote, but save from the bottom 5 by the jury, so something around 20th.

The UK and France will be in the Top 10 or at least somewhere on the left hand side on the scoreboard (Top 13). Italy will flop and will do as well as Italy 2014, Netherlands will be praised by jurors in par with Lucie Jones UK 2017 but, will get low public support. Spain, depending on revamp could be mid table or contention for last place, Germany no matter how good or flashy the staging, Bottom 3 for this train wreck

Crystal

I haven’t listened to the UK’s yet, so I have no opinion on it yet. France’s is nice, but it hasn’t quite gotten into “favorite” territory for me. Spain was kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place with the two candidate songs it put forward, and while the one it ended up going with was the better of the two songs, I don’t expect Spain to place highly. The Netherlands’ song I like, but I’m not in love with it. I think it’s awesome, though, that Jeangu is incorporating bits of Surinamese culture into the lyrics. The… Read more »

Maneskin isn’t punk rock but a watered down version of Sex Pistols and other grungy almost sleazy bands from the late 80’s and early 90’s. There are good elements to Italys song but, I find myself going against the tide with it. I want to like it but cannot seem to get to grips with it. Finland on the other hand with has rock elements like Linkin Park and Amaranthe is in my Top 5.

Netherlands, he is criminally underated for the 2nd year in a row, but his live performance at rotterdam will surprise people.

In my opinion for the UK, Spain & Germany to place higher than him on this list makes me strongly questions peoples taste.

Oh great recommendations both of you 🙂
1998 Imaani I know, but I hadn’t seen 1994 before, just watched it now, a nice classic entry! Both are better than much of 2000s UK and some 2010s UK.

I need to find more time to get acquainted with vintage Eurovision. I’d recommend UK 1983 (https://youtu.be/in5hT6P9KFA), very cute, very 80s!
