Several teen stars are working hard to win the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. And while we are still over a month out from the first semifinal, the bookies suggest things are looking positive for at least two of them. Malta’s Destiny is the heavy favourite to win the first semifinal, with Sweden’s Tusse following as second-favourite.

Eurovision 2021 Semi-Final 1 Odds: Malta is the bookies’ favourite to win

A post shared by wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs)

Ever since she was confirmed as Malta’s representative to Eurovision this year, expectations have been running wild. And since the release of her song “Je me casse”, the hype has gone in to overdrive.

Destiny has eclipsed Switzerland to become the favourite to win the grand final of the contest, and the odds for the first semifinal support the story. She is sitting on 15/16 to win the semifinal. Those are ridiculously short odds (less than 1!)! The Junior Eurovision winner is set to close to the show, and it looks like she will have no problem making it to the final.

The bookies’ second favourite is Tusse, who has been sitting at around 3/1. His song “Voices” was tipped to win Melodifestivalen all through the contest, and the hype continues at Eurovision. The odds suggest that Sweden will have absolutely no problem for the tenth consecutive year.

Sitting as third favourite, at 37/5, is Lithuania. The Roop won Pabandom iš naujo! for the second year in a row, and the bookies are happy with the result. The song “Discoteque” is set to open the semifinal, and the odds suggest they will sail confidently into the final.

At fourth is Cyprus at 11/1. Once again, the island nation has opted for a modern dance song sung by a solo female singer. It’s a formula that has helped Cyprus achieve a qualification streak, and the odds suggest that Elena Tsagrinou and “El Diablo” will keep the streak going for a third year.

And at fifth is Norway at 27/2. Tix defied the odds to defeat KEiiNO at Melodi Grand Prix and win the ticket to Rotterdam. His song “Fallen Angel” has polarised fans, but with strong backing from his home country, the singer may defy the bookies yet again this May.

At the other end, Ireland and Slovenia are the countries the bookies consider least likely to win the semifinal. Both are sitting at 28/1. However, we are still more than a month out from the contest and everything can change in that time. We still know nothing of the staging plans, and surprises are always a part of the Eurovision season. Never count a song out.

Eurovision 2021 Odds: Semi-Final 1 Winner

  1. Malta – 15/16
  2. Sweden – 56/19
  3. Lithuania 37/5
  4. Cyprus – 11/1
  5. Norway – 27/2
  6. Azerbaijan – 29/2
  7. Romania – 35/2
  8. Russia – 19/1
  9. North Macedonia – 21/1
  10. Belgium – 21/1
  11. Croatia – 24/1
  12. Ukraine – 24/1
  13. Israel – 27/1
  14. Australia – 27/1
  15. Ireland – 28/1
  16. Slovenia – 28/1

Eurovision 2021: Semi-Final One Odds to qualify

As for the odds to qualify, we find similar songs attracting the bookies attention. Sweden is in the top spot, at 1/10, with the same favourites amongst the top 10. If the bookies are correct, then our ten qualifiers are Sweden, Cyprus, Malta, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Romania, Russia, Norway, Croatia and Belgium.

This means that Ukraine, Israel, Ireland, Australia, Slovenia and North Macedonia are out. Croatia will have qualified for the first time since 2017, while Ukraine and Australia will have failed to advance for the first time in their time competing.

  1. Sweden – 1/10
  2. Cyprus – 2/17
  3. Malta – 2/13
  4. Lithuania – 2/13
  5. Azerbaijan – 3/13
  6. Romania – 4/13
  7. Russia – 4/13

  10. Belgium – 11/21
  11. Ukraine – 6/11
  12. Israel – 1/1

  14. Australia – 35/19
  15. Slovenia – 14/5
  16. North Macedonia – 33/10

I just love how unpredictable this semi final is, there is only 4 guaranteed, 2 that are safe enough and then 6 countries fighting for the last 4 qualification spots. It is really going to come down to who can preform on the night, and that is really exciting.

American based in Baku, Azerbaijan here…. So, I’m really surprised at some of these rankings….With Belarus out and tensions with Ukraine high, Russia doesn’t really have many “friends” OR Russian speakers in this group…. Also, Sweden has the most boring and generic (though not worst) song in the group….They’ll probably qualify because they’re Sweden…but does anyone LOVE this song enough to vote for it? As for Macedonia, Vasil has the best voice in the competition and I expect this will do well with the juries…..even if televoters dismiss it. Malta and (shameless guilty pleasure/Lady Gaga copy) Cyprus are the safest… Read more »

I can see Malta winning outright and I wouldn’t have a problem with that – Destiny is super talented, and her song is a grower, whilst she comes across as really fun and decent too. Personally I’d be happy to hear Valletta 2022 or Paris 2022.

I quite like Ireland’s song as well. Maybe not a winner but I’d like to see it qualify. Ukraine *had* a really decent and quirky song, but their edit to make it acceptable length is quite poor… the extra minute of the original gave it room to breathe, and without that, it’s a mess.

I don’t think either Russia or Ukraine will qualify this year. Both of their songs are awful. Also the fact that Belarus is no longer in this semi will hurt them. I also think Norway could be a shock non-qualifier this year. They have a very average and generic song that only won Melodi Grand Prix purely due to Tix’s popularity and fanbase.

I think Malta, Sweden, Lithuania, and Cyprus are the only countries that I can safely say are definitely qualifying. The only country that I think is a definite non-qualifier is Slovenia.

Take song from Rita Ora, music video from Zara Larsson, add some latin elements then decorate it with Head & Shoulders and viola – there’s Cypriot entry for ESC 2021

I’m very surprised to see Australia ranked so low with the bookies because I think they have a strong song this year that is very modern and radio-friendly. Unless Australia experiences a repeat of what happened in 2018 with Jessica Mauboy (which I think is unlikely), I think Australia should easily qualify and challenge for Top 10 in the grand final and their live performance should have good staging.

I’m a little surprised Sweden is so highly ranked since the public reception of the song is mild, at best. If anything, I was personally expecting this to be to the lower end of the qualifying list, and wouldn’t have been surprised if it was a NQ, but since it is Sweden that would be impossible. This is can all change with staging, of course, but I’m starting to think Malta is getting slightly overhyped by the bookies and critics. It is a very good song, don’t get me wrong, but in terms of electro-swing, it is more middle of… Read more »

Where did you see that the response is low? It is a great hit in Sweden on Spotify. It is not liked here on wiwibloggs just like Frans and his song ended up a big hit in many countries in Europe. Time will tell. I don’t think it is a winner – but Tusse is a great performer.

I’m never confident with RTÉ but I am confident with Lesley. I feel she is taking the lead ahead of RTÉ and bossing it. I trust her to put on a stage show that will be memorable and get Ireland through. Most people seem to like the Irish entry so it just needs to be memorable enough on the night to secure votes.

Oh please! Whatever Sweden sends you would all still be like “Overrated, only will do well because it’s Sweden”. Even if we sent fan favourites Dotter or Eric Saade you would still bash it and say exactly the same thing, That shows more that you in fact have a bias and jealousy towards Sweden rather than judging on the act. Instead of being jealous, how about pointing that towards your broadcaster and forcing them to take contest seriously and find an act that can do well with juries, instead of sending local act only your neighbours get?
