Stefania Last Dance Greece Eurovision 2021

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 39 competing songs in Eurovision 2021. Next we head to Greece where Stefania has “Last Dance”. Did it make us want to hit the dancefloor? Read on to find out!

Stefania – “Last Dance”

“Last Dance” reviews

Deban: “Last Dance” is a disco bop freshened with a 2021 arrangement. As far as songs go, this is an excellent offering. It straddles the decades without sounding overworked. Visually, this is Greek; musically, it is global. Fittingly, Stefania holds a presence in Eurovision’s host country. She’s Dutch with Greek roots. Her youthful looks and nimble moves are key assets. Vocally, she can do pop. As a total package, “Last Dance” courts enough traction from televoters, club kids and music experts. Qualification predictions are somewhat pointless. Miss Liberakakis will be flying her pegasus all the way to a top ten finish at the grand final.

Score: 8

Jordi: Stefania sings about every end being a new beginning. This is exactly what I do every time I play this song, I hit replay. Stefania’s “Last Dance” has a joyful ’80s feel that is irresistible, fresh and makes you dance the night away. The track has some interesting twists and turns in the production which save it from resulting too predictable. And the chorus is instant and serves hooks for days. Perhaps, it’s hard to imagine the concept of the video in its studio version. But add the right staging, and there you slay. In comparison to last year’s, this is more matured. I can predict two things: this will party live and it won’t be my last dance.

Score: 8

Lucy: Bringing the ’80s to the modern-day is definitely the big thing at the moment across the music industry, and it’s reflected in Eurovision. There are two ways to do it, a truly modern interpretation or something which sounds like it was directly pulled from the decade (hi, Denmark!). However, I feel “Last Dance” is trapped somewhere in the middle, and it’s a bit unsatisfying. I’m concerned about the potential to bring the video to the stage as I find it a bit cringy, however more so the lyric “a rockin’ romance”. Stefania has youth and charisma to sell this on stage, but controversially, I actually think “Superg!rl” was better.

Score: 3

Natalie: I always knew Stefania could do a lot better than “Superg!rl”, and I feel really vindicated. This is the kind of music that I love from Greece. Great vocals, energetic production, and a bit of Greek mythos. What’s not to love? Throw in some chorus and a cheeky youthful vibe and I’ll say you’ve got something pretty special on your hands here. I can’t wait to see how Stefania does on stage with this one. She’s got some Eurovision experience under her belt already, so I think she could kill this.

Score: 8

Sebastian: “Last Dance” is simply on-trend. In an era where the ’80s is back, Stefania has the perfect opportunity here to ride that bandwagon with a song that’s inoffensive, yet surprisingly polished and catchy. This doesn’t feel like pop-by-the-numbers, rather, it’s something you could definitely hear on top music charts. Here’s hoping Stefania can show off a maturity and strength to make the song stand out further — and here’s hoping she’s not swallowed by this strong production.

Score: 8.5

Stefania – “Last Dance” rankings

In the Wiwi Jury we have 24 jurors but only have room for five reviews. The remaining scores are below:

Luis: 8.5

eww how would someone give this song a 3 or 4? I mean i’m curious to see how they rated the other entries (see Lithuania, San Marino, Norway)

I don’t mind the song personally, it’s enjoyable. However, it doesn’t really go anywhere for me; it’s doesn’t have much of an elevated moment, so it feels like it stays the same throughout. Also, this is just a bit of a nitpick, but it often sounds like she’s saying ‘Let’s Dance’ instead of ‘Last Dance’ and that kind of bugs me because I know it’s Last Dance but my brain’s like ‘Let’s Dance’, but it’s not a massive thing. It might sound better live but yeah just an enunciation issue for me. I do think this will likely qualify, whereabouts… Read more »

She says both. The chorus starts with the phrase “let’s dance!” And then the rest of the chorus says “our last dance”. I get what you mean though.

The only bit of concern I have for Greece’s entry is the lack of any live performance. We don’t know what Stefania sounds like live while dancing. Sure she does great vocals on tape, but can she pull it off live?

Ever since Greece did away with a national final, they’ve been having problems at Eurovision.

Top notch quality! Since its release, I have been listening to it on repeat. A pop music perfection. I also really like the mv, it has a story that is subliminally explaining our current situation(pamdemic) with Greek mythology. Kudos to Stefania, she took this song to another level with her great vocals.

More adult and interesting than her last attempt. It’s clear they have thrown a little bit of everything to make it stand out and draw the listener’s attention. That’s what the Dream Team do. I’m sure that even if they won’t have a Pegasus on stage they’re investing an big amount of € in the live performance. While “Last Dance” is nothing exceptionally original – it just sticks to the 80’s trend – it is still enjoyable. Problem? The first minute is utterly boring and plain. They tried to make it epic with the heavy percussion and the rolling drums… Read more »

I’ll name the positives first: Stefania is a young, but extremely talented singer. I like the timbre of her voice and the fact that this time around she’s got an entry that doesn’t reduce her to a JESC performer. The production of the track is professional (as we’ve come to expect from ARCADE and Kontopoulos), and while “Last Dance” is for the most part the antithesis of risk and inventiveness, I’d still say it checks every box on the list of an average chartbuster’s standard components, which I think is what the producers were going for. Being ‘80s-inspired does not… Read more »

Absolutely. To me a good review is one that’s in-depth, witty, funny or unconventional, not necessarily the one I agree with. I’m actually more inclined to like reviews that manage to change my mind than ones that only express resemblant thoughts. As for Greece, I don’t dislike it, I’m fairly indifferent about it, which for me is worse than being irritated or disturbed by a song. And the score… well, it’s just a number, I don’t really take it that seriously.

I must be missing something because I cannot hear anything amazing about “last dance” It just doesn’t go anywhere for me. It’s harmless enough pop but there’s nothing wow there to make me want to vote for it. Even the shortened clip used in the youtube summeries is so annoying with that repetitive line over and over.
Greece is a borderline qualifier for me this year. Sorry.

Competing against pop songs that are mostly trying to be hip, sexy or quirky, this is something I would call a “family oriented bop”. Everything about it is accessible, adequate and tasteful without being boring. And Stefania has a great voice for pop music. The verses’ style is quite familiar to Eurovision viewers, leaving the 80’s trend only to the chorus, which created a nice balance.Staging will define how well it can do, let’s hope the Greek delegation learned some lessons from past years. 7/10

Nice song which I don’t think has a chance to be non qualifier. The beat here is nice and the chorus is catchy. What I don’t like here is that lyrically it’s quite weak and there’s no clear message.
I hope the hype for the staging will be justified and not end up like Spain 19 or Greece 17 as it has the same director.

at least a 7/10 would be acceptable… I mean, it’s not that mediocre, sweden, russia, ukraine and especially ireland (which is on top of your jury for no reason) are much worse, and even 3/4 don’t have chances to qualify (sweden will defo qualify bc of juries, we all know that)

This is true. Greece used to slay the staging every year, but: 2017: What we saw wasnt what Fokas Evaggelinos wanted. He wanted Demy on a swing hanging from the ceiling, and a fairytale being portrayed on a screen on the stage. Producers agreed but they changed their opinion at the last moment ( for safety reasons ), so Fokas was left with a long dress for Demy ( they designed for the swing ), that mini platform that Demy was on ( it was only for Demy to get up on the swing!!! lol ) and that stupid screen… Read more »

Yeah she had, she was friends with the director called Jaly or something. I didnt made those up, Kalimeris ( a composer of Oniro mou ) said those things, being angry with Yianna, as she was to blame for the presentation. 2018 team was really amateur so they did whatever Yianna wanted.
And about the technology that couldnt arrive at time, it was all last minute excuses, you can watch here the stand in rehearsal for Oniro mou:

This is what Yianna envisioned from the start.

2018. Long story short: The broadcaster didn’t care (tiny budget, indifference), Panic didn’t care (Eleni and Cyprus), Yanna was delusional. Long story: The initial plan for the staging was quite as “thisisnt” described. Then Yanna misinterpreted the feedback from the videos of the song. The lyric video with a picture of her was released first and had a massive appeal. When they released the official video with the stud, the lyric video had already more than 1 million views. There was no way to surpass that. Still, Yanna was dumb enough to make the conclusion (out of this!) that viewers… Read more »

The score is good. But in my opinion, it doesn’t suffice the quality of the song.
I mean there are other wiwi rankings much higher than the one for Greece.
Anyway, I appreciate Deban’s and William’s opinion and I am satisfied with their own score.

I can also understand that there might be some sceptical people here.
Makes sense if someone is underestimating the Greek song since no live performance is available yet. Can Stefania sing and dance? Does she have the charisma to sell her song on the stage? We will all see in May 🙂

there’s too much going on in the production to make it radio friendly in this music climate. they should’ve tweaked out some 80s references that were unnecessary. overall it’s faceless dated garbaj and nothing more, no wonder el diablo is doing better in the greek charts than their own entry.

Well, El Diablo is doing much better than Last Dance in the charts, because, guess, Elena Tsagrinou is much more famous in Greece than Stefania. Imagine Stefania stepped in a Greek stage for the first time in summer 2019! Back in 2019, Tsagrinou had her songs with the most views after starting solo career. Even now in 2021 few people know Stefania in Greece, the majority of whom are Eurofans who follow annually Eurovision

My cousin objected to this song’s official video, as it apparently “glorifies depression and suicide attempts.” I don’t agree with him. The lyrics are rather dark, and the music is in the dramatic D minor, but other than that it’s just a dance track with a bit of hope tagged on the end. The rest of the appeal is all the Greek legend imagery. About the music: What I do like about this track are the progressions in the Verses and the Bridges. Stefania gets to sing some dramatic melodies that go all the way down to a lower F.… Read more »

I’m a fan of the 80s theme circulating but I’m not sure this song is a great depiction of it. It feels a bit middle of the road as in I wouldn’t mind listening to it but it’s not a song I’d replay. I find the arrangement a bit odd as well; a whole minute until the first chorus kicks in but only 20 seconds for the final chorus? it’s a fatal flaw for the chorus to be ‘played’ only once in the end because at that point the listener will have grasped the melody and the abrupt ending feels… Read more »

For my ranking, Stefania last year had a good song with amazing ethnic elements, but with TERRIBLE lyrics. This year, they kinda fixed the lyrics issue and had a different approach comparing to last year. However, because of the cringy videoclip, many people tend to hate the song, because the videoclip brings a different approach to “Last Dance”, something which is misleading. The bad ratings are mostly because of the videoclip as I know, because her vocals are right on place. With my first view I made the big mistake to watch the videoclip and as a result I didn’t… Read more »

12. Greece – Stefania – Last Dance – 8/10 – satisfying, if a little predictable, building into a soaring, electronic chorus. If you put splashing drums into a track then I am sold. This feels more mature than last year, despite the “rockin’ romance” lyric (which I pretend I don’t hear properly) and a memorable “oh oh oh” thrown in for good measure. This has a more universal appeal than Supergirl.

6) Greece – There are about 7 songs this year that I would gladly listen to over and over again, and this is one of them. Every listen it feels like Stefania’s taking me on an adventure, but I do worry about what the staging will look like for this. If there was some sort of staging that reflected the music video, I think this could do well. The one issue I have with the song – which I mentioned when it got released – was that the ending feels a little rushed. Other than that, I love it. Great… Read more »

Unpopular opinion, but I believe that the TOP songs of semi 2 are *equally* good to those of semi 1. My top 5 of the semi (which include already covered Greece and Czech Republic) are just as good as my top 5 from semi 1. In fact, my overall winner is in semi 2. However, places 6-12 in semi 1 are much stronger than those from semi 2. Semi 1 has much more songs which will be sad to see left in the semi.
