From backing singer for Tamara Todevska in 2019 to literally shining bright in the limelight in 2021, North Macedonia’s Vasil has made himself at home on the Eurovision stage. The star is now ready to sing “Here I Stand” during the first semi-final on Tuesday. Ahead of this, our own William caught up with Vasil for a quick interview. Check out what he has to say below!

Interview: Vasil at Eurovision 2021

“I’m very glad for the first rehearsal.” Vasil comments. “Tine Matulessy, our stage director, and I are a great match in energy and in a professional level, I feel.”

The  North Macedonian singer has offered a very dramatic and extravagant stage show to go along with “Here I Stand”. Vasil shares an interesting perspective of their inspiration for the staging, which has been challenging but calculated to perfection in each rehearsal. “I am obsessed with kintsukuroi, the Japanese technique where you fix broken porcelain with gold lacquer and it ends up more beautiful than before. The first idea was how could we portray that on the stage, as well as actually convey that feeling of going from darkness into light.”

Despite being alone on stage, Vasil feels no fear nor regret once he performs. “We haven’t been on a stage in so long. It’s so emotional when you get on the stage, and you’re like ‘we made it, we did it’. I feel all the love coming my way.”

The North Macedonian star also spoke about his feature in Attitude magazine. “I said I was ready to share my story, and I was told that it was a very brave move to do this being from the Balkans. If I don’t live my truth, how could I expect people to believe me? I was scared in February, but then after time passed and the song and video were revealed, I was so confident that I had to make this interview and photoshoot, to be a voice for the voiceless.”

And near the start of his self-imposed radio silence before leaving Skopje, he received encouraging words from a very important and close friend. “Tamara Todevska called me and told me it was meant to be, and to cherish the moment, because it does go so fast. To enjoy the Eurovision experience.”

What did you learn from our interview with Vasil? Are you rooting for him in the first semi-final? Sound off in the comments below!

Honestly, it feels so sad to join the competition being a probable qualifier and then the contest is cancelled and you come back seeing everyone considering you as the ONLY sure NQ of your semi…

I mean, don’t get me wrong, his song definitely doesn’t deserve qualification but I feel bad for him…

If we notice and point out a bias does that make us homophobic? If so, I must have many phobias.

I’m very glad Vasil made it to Rotterdam, and is enjoying his experience, after the backlash in North Macedonia.
