Destiny Malta Eurovision 2021
PHOTO: EBU / ANDRES PUTTING

Over the weekend, just after the last round of second rehearsals, we asked y’all to vote for your Eurovision 2021 semi-final one favourites. Now, with just hours to go until the show goes live, we can reveal your top picks in the first semi-final. After counting a total of 17,964 votes for 16 acts, the results are in.

Poll results: Malta’s Destiny is your favourite to win the first semi-final of Eurovision 2021 with “Je Me Casse”

Malta’s Destiny has been a firm favourite with fans for months. And that support remains strong going into tonight’s semi-final. The “Je Me Casse” singer amassed 2,923 votes or 16.27% of all votes cast.  The 18-year-old vocal powerhouse has been pitch perfect throughout her time in Rotterdam, nailing all three minutes of her empowering song “Je me casse” — French slang for “I gotta go” or “I’m outta here!” Destiny wears a silver, sparkly number with thigh-high boots and stands centre stage with four dancers flitting around her. The staging features bold blocks of colour — from pinks to yellows — and eventually turns into a gigantic starscape. When Destiny hits the bridge — Ladies, listen to me! — the stars seem to shoot out from everywhere, creating a real moment.

Croatia’s Albina comes in second. The “Tick-Tock” hitmaker attracted 13.3% of the vote, which amounts to an impressive tally of 2,390 votes. Albina’s song is all about letting go of toxic relationships: “Lost in your playzone….now we’re in a warzone!” Our girl banishes the bad vibes by slipping into a futuristic warrior suit that reflects all manner of purples and pastels. She’s the only artist this year to stay entirely off the main stage — she and her four male backing dancers perform on a platform located just in front of it. Eye-catching visuals include beams of light that seem to fire from Albina’s body, and a moment where her dancers propel her toward the ceiling as she sings on her back. What’s better than one Albina? Try five. There’s a gorgeous hologram moment where she duplicates the fashion, the hair, the vibe.

Bronze goes to Cyprus’ Elena Tsagrinou with “El Diablo”. The pop goddess took home 2,297 votes or 12.79% of all votes cast. Elena sings of falling in love with a man as bad as the devil. And with that comes a sensual performance replete with devilishly good choreography performed by Elena (at times on her back, at times bending her back) and four dancers in skin-tight red catsuits. The stage moves between solid black, red and white, always framing Elena and her dancers beautifully. At the end of the song letters spelling out EL DIABLO become apparent and they catch fire — providing extra heat to an already hot performance.

The top five is complete by Ukraine’s Go_A with “Shum” and Lithuania’s The Roop with “Discoteque”.

If the final decision was down to our readers, the remaining five qualifiers would be Russia’s Manizha with “Russian Woman”, Ireland’s Lesley Roy with “Maps”, Romania’s Roxen with “Amnesia”, Israel’s Eden Alene with “Set Me Free” and Belgium’s Hooverphonic with “The Wrong Place”.

Poll results: Who should win Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2021?

  1. Malta: Destiny “Je me cases” 16.27% (2,923 votes)
  2. Croatia: Albina “Tick-Tock” 13.3% (2,390 votes)
  3. Cyprus: Elena Tsagrinou “El Diablo” 12.79% (2,297 votes)
  4. Ukraine: Go_A “Shum” 8.85% (1,589 votes)
  5. Lithuania: The Roop “Discoteque” 8.31% (1,493 votes)
  6. Russia: Manizha “Russian Woman” 7.19% (1,292 votes)
  7. Ireland: Lesley Roy “Maps” 6.63% (1,191 votes)
  8. Romania: Roxen “Amnesia” 4.1% (736 votes)
  9. Israel: Eden Alene “Set Me Free” 3.87% (696 votes)
  10. Belgium: Hooverphonic “The Wrong Place” 3.76% (675 votes)
  11. Azerbaijan: Efendi “Mata Hari” 3.39% (609 votes)
  12. Norway: Tix “Fallen Angel” 3.23% (580 votes)
  13. Australia: Montaigne “Technicolour” 2.88% (518 votes)
  14. Sweden: Tusse “Voices” 2.84% (511 votes)
  15. Slovenia: Ana Soklič “Amen” 1.85% (332 votes)
  16. North Macedonia: Vasil “Here I Stand” 0.73% (132 votes)

Total Votes: 17,964

Do you agree with the results? Is Malta your favourite? Which songs are underrated? Let us know in the comments.

So let’s imagine Australia qualifies. Do we will see again saturday the exact same live-on-tape performance or do they have recorded two different ones ?

How many people watch the semi finals vs the grand final? I think it’s mainly the fandom that watch the semis…

Every year when ESC comes I’m saying to myself “This year you’re gonna relax and enjoy the show! It’s just a stupid show! Enjoy it already!”

Never has it once worked.

I know my country isn’t qualifying tonight, yet I’m already exhausted from the stress.

Wiwibloggs Twitter account is discussing each country from the 3rd rehearsal. I forgot there was even a 3rd rehearsal.
Big improvements all round apparently…I swear this gets harder to predict each time they rehearse

‘You are the best’ is what got him the downvotes. A simple ‘Go Tusse’ wouldn’t have offended anybody.

No way. Forget about winning, Malta doesn’t deserve TOP 10 though. Extremely overrated. Bad staging, very good vocals but bad performance and bad outfit. Girl, Destiny , your song is a dance song, you need to move, don’t stay there like a statue. If you want to show your vocal ability, you better select a ballad. In the type of songs like yours, you need to dance, move.

I don’t want to be mean but I’m just sick with the Maltese advertising team. Just now I saw an add in another Eurovision friendly website, suggesting me to vote for Malta today and on the 22nd…

I wish I can send you a photo of the ads I also came across, some of which are Ireland, Romania and Norway. Not saying Malta is not advertising, but it’s not the only country! Far from it!

Being confident in your product is one thing, but being confident that people will actually vote is another thing given how Eurovision works. So good on them.

I could see 1000 ads for one entry alone, but that doesn’t make me vote for it if it’s not a good song.

It’s just do the opposite for me if I see an add: not vote for the song. I am grown enough to judge a song and vote according to my ears and taste. No one has to tell me who to vote for.
This Malta overhype is now becoming super annoying and makes me wish they don’t win so this will be a lesson for the future to any country that rely only on marketing and promotion.

Agree. I kept seeing Malta ads and Norway ads. I’m not surprised with Malta’s delegation but I remember Tix’s fans attacking me saying he doesn’t care about the competition, he just wants to spread the message lmao

So what? Keep in mind that Malta is one of the smallest countries, loads of people don’t even know where the country is located plus this shows that as a country they take the contest very seriously

I agree with the first to sixth place qualifiers based on the votes. Seventh to tenth placed contestants in this poll are less certain to me.

And personally, I would really like to see Azerbaijan qualify.

I also quite like Australia, but I think that Slovenia and Australia almost certainly won’t be in the final. Apparently Belgium gave a great performance during the jury show, so you never know, they could make it!

Be nice to get to know some of the genuine people who are part of this community.

I’d honestly be happy with those 10, maybe not that particular order, I can’t see Croatia coming 3rd, but I can see them qualifying.
But that’s pretty much the 10 I’d pass if it was my decision alone.
