How is the running order decided?

The Eurovision running order is decided through a two-step process.

First, the finalists randomly choose from a pot whether they will perform in the first half or the second half of the grand final. Then the show organisers will structure the acts in the most suitable running order possible, taking into a number of factors including tonal variety and the logistics of moving staging.

The only act whose running order position is entirely random is the host country. Back in 2020, The Netherlands’ Jeangu Macrooy drew spot 23 in the grand final. He retains this position for the 2021 show.

Prior to 2013, the final running order was determined completely at random. This rule was changed however to avoid subjecting audiences to an onslaught of countless ballads or songs with similar staging all in a row.

Does running order impact a country’s chances of victory?

It is generally considered favourable to perform starting from a later position in the running order. Recent winners including Israel’s Netta (22nd), Ukraine’s Jamala (21st) and Denmark’s Emmelie de Forest (18th) all performed in the second half.

But winning from an earlier position isn’t unheard of. Sweden’s Måns Zelmerlöw (10th), Portugal’s Salvador Sobral (11th) and The Netherlands’ Duncan Laurence (12th) all performed in the first half.

The only running order position to have never produced a winner is the second place draw, often considered “the death slot”. But remember — there’s a first time for everything!

What do you think? Are you happy with the grand final running order? Let us know in the comments below.

Isn’t interesting that both Victoria and Hatari competed in the same running order spot, 13th in one of the semi finals and 17th in the finals like from BDSM punk rock to soft emotional ballad for 2 years? 😀

Year after year the ESC has become a joke. This excuse of creating a balance of different song genres and styles is nothing but a ploy to favour certain countries over others. The fairest and more justified manner to decide the running order is to retain the old deciding manner – that is by lot and not to leave it in the hands of the production team. So what is there are more ballads and/or bops following each other. That would be purely based on luck and chance. The lottery system is the best method because it takes away the… Read more »

So, RAI had a Press Conference about the Eurovision. Claudio Fasulo, Entertainment Director at RAI, said: “If Italy and Maneskin are going to win, Rai would gladly host the biggest musical event in the world. In 2017, we had meetings and talked about Turin as best option for host city. Today, we would need a new meeting to decide the host city to see if there’re new possibilities”.

There’s so many potential host cities there and I’m sure there will be a bidding process like whenever any country wins.
Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, Genoa would all be great host cities full of culture and things.
I think they should bring it to Rome though personally, it’s their great capital and it’s been so long since Italy hosted last, and who knows when they will again.
BUT FIRST…let’s see if they even win. It really is all to play for.

San Marino should definitely add “feat. Flo Rida” to their title! Also, the screens should say Flo Rida more explicitly during the performance. Many people might completely miss Flo Rida. They need all that boost as they get no points for free. And they deserve those points! What a bop!

They put in a lot of songs to party at the very start of the show, which is clearly not going to benefit them. Malta, who was one of the big favorites, could suffer. Too bad for Belgium and Portugal, which I like a lot but which also find themselves at the very beginning, stuck between two slices of fiery choreography. Russia is also a bit lost in the middle of it all. It’s the only rap song. Not sure the audience that only watches the grand finale will remember it by the end of the show. Yes having Italy hosting the ESC will be very problematic. Apart from all the problems you mentioned there is also the problem of the viability of a good, real and well organised show because of great financial problems. I have visited Italy very often and I have also lived there for a time and it is painful to see how many areas of the country have changed due to the recession and other economic difficulties. Too much party kills the party. If you line up four songs with girls dressed the same, singing the same and dancing the same, the voters won’t make the difference. Belgium and Portugal, which I love, won’t have any luck either. A lot of people don’t see the first songs because they’re doing something else (eating or whatever). And the risk when you are caught between two songs to party when yours is quieter, is that the chorus of the song before or the one after will stay in people’s heads, not yours. The vast majority of people who vote… Read more »

The thing is James Newman is a fairly well regarded songwriter, he’s just not an experienced performer. Often in the last few years the UK have a very good performer and decent staging (or very good in the case of 2017) but the song itself is lacking. This time they’ve got a good song but it’s not translating live.

It will happen again one day! My first Eurovision was in 1988; I remember when we used to finish in the top 10 every year, and when we won in 1997. Prior to 1999 the UK had an advantage due to the national language rule, but we still sent good songs. Between 1988 and 1998 we were in the top ten every year, including 2nd place five times and 1st once.

I have no idea who’s winning this. Countries have put more effort into their entries this year. But I can’t say I’m listening to any of them. Just don’t feel like it for some reason. Milla I have the same feeling about Tusse he looks like he is depressed. And it is a shame. Sweden has actually a very contemporary song with a strong message from a extremely talented boy that has lived through so much. The staging is also connecting to his life and message. Are you implying that Elena and her team did not work for what you saw on Wednesday? My friend, you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s easy to pass judgement sitting on your sofa. The Cypriot team has worked on their song and presentation more than any other delegation.
It would be an embarrassment for ESC if Cyprus doesn’t finish in top 5.

Mata Hari’s male voices who say “ma-ma-ma-ma” are exactly the same with the start of Poker Face by L Gaga but no one has said anything about it. You all love this Lady Gaga plagiarism of Cyprus song this year don’t you? Haters gonna hate and that’s the end of story.

My prediction for a possible winner: Malta wins the jury vote. Switzerland and France are also high with the jury. Ukraine is out because of the jury putting them somewhere in the middle. Italy is in danger for the same reason as Ukraine. So, the question is if Malta, Switzerland and France will be able to get enough support from the televote to win. Italy is unlikely to win, since the jury won’t put them high. Other possible scenario is that some other country will be praised by the jury (like North Macedonia and Austria in the past). Then it… Read more »

You are probably right.
I think Switzerland will do better in televote then Italy and France who I think will fall down. The big question is if Ukraine (who will make a Keiino) will have enough juryvotes to beat the rest.

Ukraine, though good is just a bit too bizarre to win I think. Rock is a niche market and noise for a lot of people. Switzerland’s choice of costume will scupper its chances with the tele vote, leaving the simplicity and professionalism of France to win..me thinks.

I thought the last Ukraine song that won in 2016 was a lot more alternative than this one and they still won.
Do not underestimate Ukraine – just like Russia, they benefit from huge block televoting from ex-USSR countries and Balkan countries that always vote for each other. Add that to a song with a performance that stands out and they are off to a great result.

My guess is that Televote has also Iceland and Finland at least in Top 5, juries likely have Portugal in Top 3 and Albania in Top 5.

Also Moldova might have been slipped through by only a few points to Austria and Denmark and placed out of the Top 10 in at least one scoring (might have even placed outside the Top 10 in both but one of the two mentioned got cancelled out completely, like Austria high in Juries and extremely low in Televote).

Just some thoughts of me.

Dont know if this makes sense but on swedish i-tunes it looks like this:

Malta (12)
Denmark (18)
Portugal (19)
Iceland (28)
Finland (29)
Ukraine (39)

Confused and surprised about Portugal

It’s weird if they have made the running order around the bookies’ favorites because the odds seem highly confused this year and I doubt they will realize in the final. (Especially don’t see France matching the hype)

I don’t know why but I have a feeling that Bulgaria did not do so well. They are now tenth in the odds (and they were higher) and the performance does not have so many views on YouTube. I know views are not everything etc. but I think they expected a different reaction.

Oh, I have another point: After the two semi-finals and artists’ reactions, I am really happy that Hooverphonic and Flo Rida participated! Hooverphonic members seemed to be quite enthusiastic about the contest and in one of the interviews (I can’t remember where I saw it) they said that they would recommend some older bands like them to participate because it’s great fun. FloRida also seemed to enjoy Eurovision. Of course, Hooverphonic and Flo Rida are kinda from two completely different worlds, but they are both established artists with much experience. Maybe it will encourage other more popular artists to take… Read more »

Yeah, sure it’s not guaranteed that a popular person will do well but I feel that some entries by popular artists in the past were really lazy attempts and the broadcaster probably thought they can just really on their fame. But Hooverphonic for example entered with a song that is really true to their style, even though it’s not considered a suitable song for Eurovision by everyone.

I think the running order from 8-13 was determined by the complexity of staging.
Hurricane don’t have any props.
UK have huge props so they wanted Serbia before them.
There will probably be a commercial brake or a pause between Greece and UK just to clear the stage from smoke.
Then they couldn’t put Switzerland after Iceland because they wouldn’t have time for Blas’ moon.
I actually think it’s the only part of the running order that was organized mainly on practical criteria.

Safiya

I don’t know whether it was discussed somewhere but what do you think about the way Iceland was presented yesterday? Their performance was showed just after Moldova and then the next country followed without any breaks. They probably didn’t plan any breaks there before they even knew that Iceland won’t perform live. I feel that they emphasized the fact that Montaigne was not there much more and there was even this shot after her performance showing that she was not actually on stage. I am wondering if it hurt her chances somehow and is the Australian delegation unhappy with the… Read more »

Of course, Australia is not in the same situation as Iceland was. But lets be honest for a second, Australia got eliminated because Techincolour is just not a great song (and she didn’t sung that well) while Iceland’s 10 Years was well presented by great performers with (almost) no flaws in their performance (as I saw Arny had a problem with her keyboard once, it is totally normal for rehearsal footage).

I have no idea why Italy is popular; they are a joke , like a bunch of students parodying 1970s Glam Rock … do you think that silly girl even knows how to play her instrument ?

Every real rock band in the world should be laughing at these four clowns ; moreover, I’m relieved that Finland made it in and are in the second half where they can drain some of their thunder , but they are sure to get the moron vote in spades !

It’s a bit rude to put it that way but I’m also baffled by their popularity atm. Italy’s song and performance are typical of the rock genre and nothing is special or unique – but many people say it’s “quality” and “authentic” (as they often say about Italy). Finland is nothing new either but it’s DAMN CATCHY!

Okay okay, so the second half is gonna be a bloodbath, huh?
Also, someone’s got a special kind of humour for placing Finland after Germany, probably the two most contrasting songs of the competition. We’re gonna go from “I don’t feel hate” to “put your middle fingers up!” ???
Anyway, hope that Italy finally wins, it’s about time and their song + performance is amazing this year, ahead of everyone else imo.

It’s the perfect response to Germany’s boring, insipid, forgettable song, which would have never qualified if it weren’t from a Big 4 country 😉

As I predicted it’ll be the very close race between Italy and France, bookies also prove it right now, both countries have same odds. Switzerland is also back in the race. And its position in the running order proves it. Malta is definitely out.
Final is going to be super excited. I can’t remember a year when there was no clear favorite at all and it’s hard to predict who it will be. It’s really cool.

I think this is between Italy, France and Switzerland , but I fear the two Fench songs will vote split .. just ask yourself if you were voting for France to win , then who would be your second choice ; and in a similar way if you wanted Gjon to win who would you pick to be second ? If Switzerland were not in the race it would improve the chances of France INO

I don’t like Italy at all but considering the favourable running order and vote splitting I fear they just may win
