Germany’s Eurovision 2021 representative Jendrik is all made up and ready to take his ultra-altruistic song “I Don’t Feel Hate” to the Rotterdam’s Ahoy arena at the grand final. Our own William Lee Adams caught up with the singer to hear his thoughts about the rehearsals. Listen to the interview below.

Interview: Jendrik at Eurovision 2021

Featuring his signature high energy and charismatic smile, Jendrik was pretty happy to meet up and talk about his Eurovision experience, which he found pretty mixed at first. “We’re getting better. On the first rehearsal it was a lot, and on the second rehearsal, I was too concentrated on the camera and cues. I want to have fun, I don’t want to act like I’m having fun.”

While he funnily remarks the whole performance is difficult, he highlights a certain part as the most challenging. “I have to decide on the speech at the end of the song because I always said something different. I was told I can’t improvise it, and I will likely say what I said on the second rehearsal: Ladies and gentlemen, enjoy your life, please don’t feel hate because that’s stupid as f***, goodbye!”

Jendrik reminisced that he wasn’t always this extrovert and big personality, but began owning his confidence for theatre school. “I was very normal, I wasn’t theatrical at all! They taught me everything, most importantly the confidence and pride to be myself. It’s something everyone has to learn and can develop.”

Confidence and pride is exactly what he shows in every video he has uploaded on his social media channels, one of his biggest trademarks across the Eurovision season, starting all the way from his reveal as the artist to this day. “In the hotel room, I almost always cut the videos I post all the time. I said to myself ‘I want to do a video every day’, which is what I’m doing!”

And for closing, Jendrik has something special to say to Eurofans around the globe. “What I always say at the end of videos, try to see the contest on the reason Eurovision was created. To come together and celebrate music and the artists, there’s no reason to hate on the artists. And if you got space in your top ten, which you are not sure how to fill, just give it to me, pretty please!”
