The Netherlands’ Duncan Laurence — the reigning king of Eurovision — has experienced international success with his song “Arcade”, cracking the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and achieving global platinum status after reaching 1 billion streams. And we now know which songs of Eurovision 2021 may follow in his footsteps courtesy of the Spotify Global Viral Top 50 chart.
Eurovision songs from Ukraine and Cyprus on Spotify’s Global Viral Top 50 chart
By 21 May — on the eve of the Eurovision final — four songs from Eurovision 2021 had entered the chart.
Ukraine’s “SHUM”
Ukraine’s Go_A currently lead the way with their EDM-folk masterpiece SHUM. The song is sitting in spot #5 behind the likes of “Castaways” from The Backyardigans and “Dick (feat. Doja Cat)” by StarBoi3.
The song, which sees lead singer Kateryna portray the season of spring, is all about rebirth and renewal. It’s a topic she understands well, having grown up near the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site.
Cyprus’ “El Diablo”
Cyprus’ contestant Elena Tsagrinou has reached #9 on the chart with “El Diablo” — her spicy number about falling in love with a man as bad as the devil.
The song, which has shades of Lady Gaga’s “Fame Monster”, is sleek dance-pop from world-renowned creators Thomas Stengaard, Jimmy “Joker” Thornfeldt, Laurell Barker and Oxa.
The performance starts with the lyrics “hotter than sriracha on our bodies” and finishes with the words EL DIABLO burning at the back of the stage. The point to all of this is heat.
Azerbaijan’s “Mata Hari”
Coming in at position #1 is Azerbaijan’s Eurovision 2021 song “Mata Hari.”
Wiwiblogger Luis is living for it. He writes: “’Mata Hari’ is the epitome of fast-food music, and honestly, that’s what we need in the middle of a pandemic. It has urgency, a vertiginous pace and a strong hook: everything that makes a perfect piece of disposable pop. But make no mistake, Efendi does bring some extras which help this song excel in its genre: the rich traditional instrumentation, the Azerbaijani sentence and the nod to “Cleopatra” are candy for the fans. And I’m buying all of it.”
Malta’s “Je Me Casse”
Destiny from Malta has been a bookies’ favourite for a while, and our Natalie thinks it’s deserved. She writes: “Destiny needed a song that could match her talents in voice and stage presence, and I reckon they’ve delivered. There’s energy and self-assurance in spades here, and it never lets up – it grows spectacularly throughout the song which was a great move. The brass was a really nice edition too — they really set the tone and act like a herald to announce that a queen is claiming her throne. Is it winner? Well, it really will come down to the staging and performance. They really need something that will carry the shameless, indignant message of the song without being too cliché and kitschy. Could it hold its own on a playlist with “Euphoria” and “Arcade”? I think so. And if there’s one performer who can easily wield the burden of early favourite and carry it through, it’s definitely Destiny.”

I do think that Azerbaijan will surprise, especially in the televote. I heard that even people who don’t watch Eurovision love the song and people also play the song on Tiktok in Greece and some other countries. I’m not saying that TikTok is important, but what I want to say is that a lot of people really seem to appreciate the song. The song is also in the trends in some other countries, and most importantly even in Turkey. No previous Azerbaijani entry has ever made it into the Turkish trends and got so much attention by the Turkish media.… Read more »
