Il-lejla t-tajba Malta! TVM has released 20-second snippets of all 22 competing entries in Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2022. What a feeling!
And no: that’s not an unrequested throwback to Flashdance. That’s the slogan of this year’s MESC. Along with the snippets, TVM also shared more details of its renewed national selection.
They have a geometrical red heart as their logo and have also set the dates: the semi-final will happen on Thursday 17 February, and the final on Saturday the 19th.

MESC 2022: Comebacks and familiar faces
Among the names are two former Eurovision stars as well as plenty of familiar faces from previous editions of MESC as well as The X Factor Malta.
Former Firelight frontman Richard Micallef is part of the lineup. He previously competed at Eurovision 2014 with his family band, making it to the grand final with the song “Coming Home”. Richard Micallef also returned to MESC 2018 along with his father Joe Micallef. The duo finished second with “Song for Dad”.
Another familiar face is Jessica Muscat — formerly known as Jessika. In 2018 she won San Marino’s national final 1IN360 and represented the microstate alongside German rapper Jenifer Brening. This time Jessica is performing solo with the song “Kaleidoscope”.
Malta’s Junior Eurovision 2010 singer Nicole Azzopardi is also in the contest. She’s competing at MESC with the song “Into the Fire”.
Making her MESC debut is Emma Muscat. In 2018 the young singer competed in the popular Italian talent show Amici di Maria de Filippi, where she placed fifth. While Emma has released a number of Italian songs, she will compete in MESC with “Out of Sight”.

Aidan’s snippet made me search for the whole song and now I’m sad because it isn’t out yet… but at least it’s promising !!
Some of the songs sound promising, but so far these stand out: Hey Little, Electric Indigo and Kaleidoscope
Eh, whatever, the televote won’t give them points anyways no matter how hard they try lol
But RITMO for the win, it’s been a while since we haven’t heard the maltese language in the eurovision stage, maybe that’s what the televote needs to finnaly acknowledge Malta’s existence in the competition

It sounds very promising, I can ‘t wait to hear the whole songs. I like Malta more than Norway !!

So far from Aidan’s snippet it’s a love song. It starts the song with “words I could never say to you/ seems like I am plucking up some courage/ maybe if I put the words tonight will be for me”
Some of these snippets sounded quite promising and intriguing. And while the rest was meh, it’s really impressive a country as small as Malta could come up with such a selection.
Looks like there are many ballads. Can’t understand the hype with Emma Muscat, as it seems yet another generic entry. However 20 mins is not a good way to judge the songs either. I’m really excited for Baklava Feat Nicole, as their entry sounds very exciting and different. It is also good that it is Maltese traditional music with pop. Never heard it before.
I am also curious about the entry of Francesca, Jessika, and Aidan.
Tbh traditional Maltese music does not involve violin, but for the other instruments usually involved in Baklava’s background music yes they are Maltese

The snippets are quite long (snippets are usually 5-10 seconds long) but they apparently come from each song’s intro, which isn’t a reliable way to determine a song’s appeal (I mean, I can seldom tell if I like a song or not with only that). I’ll have to wait for the whole songs 🙁
I hear a lot of potential. Can’t wait to listen to the full songs.
When will the full versions come out
Ritmu has a huge potential and it’s in Maltese which makes it even better, I really hope that people won’t go for Emma Muscat just because she is popular

Aidan’s already popular in Malta. I fear people could go for Emma too, but I clearly see Aidan as a frontrunner! 🙂
I mean the beginning of out of sight starts promising. People also hype up the maltese songs in the same way only because they are sung in maltese and native languages are a pet peeve of the euro community. (unless your name is rigoberta bandini, then the community starts to worry if people at home will understand the message of a song called ‘mama’ )
Or maybe the Maltese language songs are already musically better than Ay Mama even though we’re judging on the first 20 seconds?
(It’s also funny that some people in this website complain about Malta not experimenting with their own language, and now they do they’re addressed as pandering, just can’t please everybody I guess.)
Malta and Romania have 20 and 46 participants competing and in both selections the word diversity is unknown, why have this many songs when most of them sound the same?

Really not understanding the marketing campaign here. Either at least ten of the songs are pretty much identical to one another, or someone has lazily snipped the most boring parts of the song (maybe the intros)? Either way, this does not get me very excited for this National final (which I assume was the intention?) But of course, I am only hearing 20 disjointed seconds, so the other 2:40 may be absolutely awe-inspiring? Based on 20 seconds of each song, Electric Indingo got my attention. Can’t wait to listen to all the songs in full versions.
Boy by Denise sounds very promising, I cant wait to hear the rest of the song, it could be a banger!

I usually avoid listening to snippets first, but there’s so many NFs this season, and since this is the format they decided to go with first, why not? There is obviously a lot of ballads (which many fans will find to be a negative, but for me can be a positive, if done right). These are almost teasers, as most songs got the beginning released, not the chorus. Thus, these songs can still go either way in the chorus. Some of the ballads are too difficult to judge atm because they’re mostly instrumentals.

Based of what I heard, I only like Electric Indigo. I’ll probably end up liking more when the songs are fully released.
Ballads and snippets don’t work together. With ballads you need to bring over a message and that’s almost impossible with just 20 seconds hence why I don’t like any of the ballads at the moment.
I agree with your ballad point… I normally don’t judge a ballad until a live performance because got me that’s when they either come alive or don’t

From the very small amount I heard, Richard Edwards sounds the best to me.

I don’t think it’s about being or not being over her. It’s just for reference at this point, this year’s representative is yet to be known.
On the other hand, how can a place other countries would kill for be a failure? I mean, Malta is a small country that hasn’t won the contest so far, it’s a great placing for them! I didn’t like Je Me Casse either, but I hope Destiny comes back in the future with a better song.

Really promising, a lot of them take my attention, especially Ritmu and Electric Indigo who have grabbing intros. I like that most of them wrote their song on their own.
I like that too, and also the fact that Malta is giving local artists the chance to show their talent
