Benidorm Fest: Javiera Mena “Culpa”
Electropop icon, singer and songwriter Javiera Mena is originally from Chile, but resides in Spain. Her song “Culpa” might not be new for some fans, as her song was available from October. She describes it as a “pop/dance purge with a French House twist on the feeling of guilt.”
This electropop piece would be one of the most original and unique candidacies with which Spain has participated in Eurovision, and it has undergone a revamp for Benidorm Fest. The original was above the three minute rule.
What do the “Culpa” lyrics mean?
“Culpa” reflects on the feeling of guilt but in a light and accessible setting. In an interview, Javiera explained she was very interested in this concept, as she feels she’s managed to stop blaming herself for enjoying life ever since she moved to Spain.
“Nietzche also dealt with this concept, but this is pop”, she said. That’s why she set the song on the dance floor: “It’s five in the morning, time has no end…Let life free us from this bloody guilt, far from what’s good and from what’s bad.”
She also asks her lover to let go and to “surrender to her will”. The song’s lyrics are a constant debate between light and dark, good and evil. “Let’s escape, we both want to, and surrender to my will.”

Is “Culpa” your favourite Benidorm Fest entry? Should Javiera Mena sing at Eurovision 2022? Tell us in the comment section below!
Javiera Mena is known for sing live VERY BAD. I’m chilean and she did an embarassing show with Alejandro Sanz (a well-known spanish romantic singer) in Viña del Mar festival (a blend of latin american Eurovision and summer festival) where she sang HORRIBLE. Also when she sang culpa live in the national music prizes, she didn’t sing well. By the way, all the best for her!
Spain, plz this is one of the best entries you have. So plz consider Culpa for Eurovision ?
I’ll be very happy if Javiera Mena goes to Eurovision ??
I love Rigoberta’s Ay mamá too ???
Honestly a bit too disco-y for me, but I have to admit it’s catchy as hell. I did not really like it when I listened for the first time and I was surprised that after a while I found myself humming it.
It’s one of my few favorites of Benidorm Fest! I generally do like electropop, so the minute I listened to this, I felt that this was something good. Not sure how exactly people or the juries would vote for this, but I think this will sound good in the live.
I’m still not really vibing with this song, although I admit that there is something cool about it.
It’s unlikely it’ll win Benidorm Fest but it’s a very cool song, reminisces 2000’s Latin pop greatly!
i love this
Culpa is my favorite Spanish entry!
This is my favorite. Love it.
Yes. Loving this song. Usually I’m one of the most critical in here as most songs are just meh and predictable but for some reason I love this one. Good luck.
