It’s the Spanish documentary which featured Eurovision songs “Voilà”, “Tout l’univers”, “Growing up is getting old” and “Voy a quedarme”. And now, private broadcaster Telecinco is using Rigoberta Bandini’s “Ay Mamá” as soundtrack for the second season of the documentary about Rocío Carrasco’s life.
“En el nombre de Rocío” will air in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Telecinco has already premiered some parts of it in Sálvame Lemon Tea, one of Spain’s most-watched TV shows.

While the first part of Rocío’s documentary was all about her family struggle with her ex husband and daughter and most importantly, raising awareness of the sexist violence she suffered, in this case it’s all about her relationship with her mother: Rocío Jurado.
Rocío Jurado was one of Spain’s best-known singers from the last century. She passed away in 2006, but her legend lives on today, and she is still remembered by the nickname “La más grande” (The greatest).
‘Ay Mamá’ all over Telecinco
Why is this important, you may ask? The first season of the show was a huge ratings success. It was broadcast over the Spring and it managed to get ratings of over 20% on practically every show.
While it’s not known yet if “Ay Mamá” will be the show’s soundtrack, it was used on yesterday’s premiere. And Mediaset España (the TV group behind Telecinco) has been heavily promoting the song.

It may be a bit daring to establish a connection, but it’s worth noting that all three songs that were used last year in Rocío’s TV show were favourites of the Spanish televote at Eurovision. In fact, France got 12 points, Bulgaria eight and Switzerland, seven.
For what it’s worth, though, Rigoberta Bandini got plenty of air time on Telecinco today. Her song was also featured in the news bullettin, with a full piece about the censorship of female nipples. “It’s as if nothing had changed since the 80s with Sabrina Salerno or Janet Jackson’s Superbowl”.

It’s not the first time Telecinco has worked with an artist from Benidorm Fest this season. Some weeks ago, Gonzalo Hermida also took part in a tribute to Rocío Jurado. He did not sing “Quién lo diría”, his Benidorm Fest entry, but “Mi amante amigo”.

Rigoberta Bandidni are ESC gold.Hugely talented and a song bursting with energy and build.Its so far ahead of the rest its scary.The worry is though Spain dont see it,or the jury.I remember the bonkers Danish jury who put Only Teardrops second to a steaming pile of manure.ESC winner on their hands yet couldnt see it.Ay mama should get the crowd reaction so hopefully the jury dont make a mistake.This is one of those once every decade entries for a country.
This is definitely the best song in BDF but I think it needs to be a song like terra which is impactful and then falls rather than the latter. Most people who view and vote have heard the song just once and it’s on the night and I don’t think Ay Mama is that song to wow at first. A grower if you will. But nonetheless the best song hands down.
Ay Mamá isn’t a bad song, quite the opposite, it’s great but I don’t like it myself and I’d rather have another entry representing Spain. The reason I don’t like it is quite ludicrous, though.
I mean, you would hate it too if your head started playing “La mamá de la mamá” instead of the actual song every time you see the title xd
If you don’t understand why we love this song, that’s ok. We are proud of Rigoberta. We don’t care if we flop because we always flop. This is our song and we are very happy. If another song wins in Benidorm, that is ok. Rigoberta is a wonderful representation of Spanish music and thought, and we love her regardless.

I don’t get all the hate around Ay mamá. I mean, I get people don’t like it but that does not mean you have to call the competition rigged and hate on the artist. I really hope that Rigoberta wins Benidorm and go to Eurovision as I think she’ll do better than what people à think but if Spanish people choose another entry that they’re proud of, I’ll respect it and cheer for them too. It’s just music at the end of the day.
Because of the mentality of their fans. You never see people complaining about Georgia sending literally whatever because their fans are not super loud and obnoxious hyping them selves up and complaining when the thing only they like flops.
And this comes from the oracle that predicts bottoms 5 when only 3 songs are known to represent their countries.

It’s not about modesty, babe. I can deal with the fact you don’t like the same songs I do, I don’t lose sleep over it. The problem comes when some of you act like clairvoyants. Predictions are not reliable 100% even when all the songs are chosen ( Hello Malta, Cyrpus and San Marino with OGAE poll last year), so imagine when you do them at this time. People outside of Spain don’t realise that we are ok with flopping. We are accustomed to it. Yes there are some idiots who always think we should win but they are not representing all of Spanish opinion.
This song is so meaningful to us. We don’t care if you hate it. We love it. Anyone who knows Rigoberta’s back catalogue will tell you this is very representative of her work, and that she is so respected by us. We don’t care if you like it. This is what we like.
Honestly, I am Spanish and I am not happy with flopping, hahaha. But I think that there is a big difference in flopping with songs you believe in (for example, La Venda) than with songs you don’t (Voy a Quedarme, Tu Canción, Do it for your lover, etc.). And still, La Venda was ok but not great (Miki was great, at least for me). So, although Rigoberta is not my favourite, if we decide to go with her and it’s a bottom, it would not be that bad as other years.

Well, I guess there are worse bandwagons to hop on than that of the nation’s latest indie darling who also happens to be an Eurovision hopeful. “Culpa” was released back in September.
It would be against rules if it was the public tv (RTVE) the one promoting her more than the rest, but we are talking about a private tv company. I think it’s actually a good thing that Spanish artists can see that entering the Eurovision competition is not a bad thing for them (because that has been the general thought for years here in Spain), but actually it can help them to broaden their audience.
I think some people here need to make peace with the fact that Rigoberta Bandini is insanely popular here in Spain, and that we are selecting a song that WE like, not based on what other countries want.
Like you guys do every year. But hey, if that’s what you love, you do you.

Which is very fair if you want Benidorm to stand on its own as a festival of Spanish music going forward. But given that it was revived in response to poor showings at Eurovision, what would the public reaction be if the eventual Benidorm winner has another disappointing result in Turin? I’m not directing this at Rigoberta, it’s more in general.
Then why do you keep expecting a good result. It’s totally fine to send what you like but you also need to be realistic when it comes to their chances.
I see how it is an advantage. But also it is so, if in any preselection a song is well known and played before the competition (Poland f.e) and is not forbidden. Or If in the context of Eurovision before the live shows a song is played on the radios of a country, like it happens with the melodifestivalen songs in the majority of Scandinavia.

I really do hope Spanish fans won’t be disappointed when this wins Bernidorm and then doesn’t even get into the top 10 in Turin.
To me this looks exactly like Norway last year: the most popular artist in the contest with a less then average song vs. a group with an astonishing song that is loved by pretty much anyone.

She is not my favourite. Before the live performances, I am for Rayden, although this may change, but if really a majority of people prefer this song and vote for it, I do not have any problem. I think it is actually a good song. Same happens to me if Terra is chosen.

Exactly. This is not like Tix or Tusse case (or even Bilal Hassani) where the international audience just objectively prefer other songs than theirs. People outside of Spain actually like her song.
Not saying Terra is bad but can’t see that Terra would do as well as Shum. If I were to equate Terra to a song, that’s probably Tulia’s song from 2019 where they barely missed the final.
Is not only because of her popularity. People really like her song and the meaning.
