Eurovision’s most westerly national selection has come to a conclusion. The grand final of Iceland’s Söngvakeppnin 2022 saw Sigga, Beta & Elín come out on top with their song “Með hækkandi sól”.

Reykjavíkurdætur also advanced to the super-final and finished in second place.

Sigga, Beta & Elín – “Með hækkandi sól” (Iceland Eurovision 2022)

As a prominent and popular band from the Icelandic indie-pop and folk-pop scene, it was only a matter of time before Sigga Beta & Elín would dip their toe into Söngvakeppnin and Eurovision. Also known as Sísí Ey, the band consists of three sisters – Sigga, Elísabet and Elín – who are known for their beautiful and hypnotising voices. The girls are no stranger to the music scene, as their parents Ellen Kristjánsdóttir and Eyþór Gunnarsson are both hugely popular and well respected in Iceland.

“Með Hækkandi Sól” (“Rising Sun in English) is composed and written by Lovísa Elísabet Sigrúnardóttir, who has performed under her artist name LayLow, and it has Sísí Ey´s trademark sound of beautiful vocals and mesmerising sound.

Söngvakeppnin 2022 Grand Final

After performing in Icelandic during the semi-finals, those that reached the grand final had to perform in the language they intend to sing at Eurovision, should they win Söngvakeppnin 2022 and be selected as Iceland’s entry.

The winner of the grand final was determined over two rounds. In the first, a 50/50 split of viewer and jury votes chose the two super-finalists. The final decision in the super final was made solely by public vote.

Super-finalists

  • Reykjavíkurdætur – “Turn This Around”
  • Sigga, Beta & Elín – “Með hækkandi sól”

Söngvakeppnin 2022 running order

  • Katla – “Þaðan af”
  • Amarosis – “Don’t You Know”
  • Reykjavíkurdætur – “Turn This Around”
  • Stefán Óli – “Ljósið”
  • Sigga, Beta & Elín – “Með hækkandi sól”

Söngvakeppnin 2022 jury members

  • Daði Freyr (Iceland)
  • Ragnheiður Gröndal (Iceland)
  • Sóley Stefánsdóttir (Iceland)
  • Heidi Välkkilä (Finland)
  • Barry Van Cornewal (Netherlands)
  • Stig Karlsen (Norway)
  • Tusse (Sweden)

Tusse also performed his Eurovision 2021 song “Voices” as part of the interval act.

Are you happy to see Sigga Beta & Elín win Söngvakeppnin 2022? How will Iceland do at Eurovision? Let us know down below.

I wonder how nobody has commented before that this has clear vibes to swedish duo First Aid Kit… This will do well for sure with the juries. We need some quality melodic folk this year…

There is no English version. The version used in the final has to be the one they are going to have in Eurovision. And they didn’t even release an English version like the others did

At first I thought My God this is boring…and now I really like it. It’s not a winning song but it deserves at least a decent result.

Considering the low competitive level of the first semi-final and also that this song can be a grower, I can see Iceland being a borderline qualifier and that would fill me with euphoric joy.

Thanks to all the participants !

I agree, It’s so fun seeing artists so comfortable in the music that they don’t need to show the meaning. But Ireland isn’t doing that, If you exclude jesc they haven’t sung in Irish since the 60’s, Sure wish they would do something contemporary in irish.

Beautiful song from Iceland. So nice to play on repeat . I have a question, will they keep it in Icelandic? , this years Icelandic national final album with all the songs are in Icelandic, English version and Instrumental version This winning song has no English version as far as I know. I hope they keep to singing in Icelandic , because it is so classy! Well done Iceland. Genre of the song has a hint and touch of Common Linnets.

Big fan of Nordic folk and mysticism, and musically wise, this is where Iceland’s strengths lie in terms of musicality. Even outside of Eurovision.

I really like this and I really think Iceland can get top 10 this year, this will stand out for many reasons. It’s in Icelandic, such a stand out language, it’s more low key than some of the other countries this year and if place between uptempo songs this will stand out even more.

Well done Iceland

Good job, Iceland! I felt this year’s selection is poor but in the end the best of available songs won and I am happy with it. It carries a certain emotional load and the down tempo kind of mystic performance does a good job. That song was the one I picked after hearing all the songs for the first time. Dunno if it will qualify or not. Perhaps. Good luck Iceland!

I thought Klara or Daughters of Reykjavik were a better choice for the contest but I’m happy with them. Klara had an amazing staging even if the song was a little bit underwhelming and Daughter of Reykjavik was such a terrible mess but I just like it how bad and funny this was. The song is a very sweat country vibe and the singers are adorable. It will be very difficult to qualify and it is dissapointing seeing what they gave us the past 3 years but they’re going with something cute and good and at least Icelandic people will… Read more »

But it’s not fake drama. Someone asked her on Instagram will she compete at Eurovision with some other song and her facial expression was revealing. Also, why would she reveal the new song now if it won’t be Eurovision-related?

I haven’t been following Songvakeppnin this year because I’m currently moving home so I’ve missed many national finals, but as a fan of the Icelandic language, I always tend to love the Icelandic entries. Upon first listen of this years winning track, I’m a little on the fence. Although it’s a beautiful song that’s sung well, I’m afraid it’ll get lost in the sea of MOR that already exists and which the song is about to enter in to. When I heard the song, I was immediately transported to the 70’s, getting vibes of the Carpenters, and that works for… Read more »

Nice. Good harmony, sweet music. But… totally static. The three minutes felt long, which is not a good sign. But it’s great to see Iceland continue in its recent trend of going in a completely different musical direction to the rest of Europe.

So happy with this result! A mesmerizing song that gives me a 60’s folkvibe, and I simply love it! My #3 behind San Marino and Finland. A very strong year this year. Of the 37 songs we have so far it’s only 3 that I don’t like at all. But one thing that never fails: When the majority of fans says it’s a bad year I feel the opposite. And when the majority says it’s a good year I’m grumbling about a bad year …

Never in a million years would I have guessed that this song would be tonight’s winner. BUT… I have to admit that it is beautifully sung by the three sisters, and it does stand out in terms of originality compared to the other performances tonight. There is a very distinctive Icelandic feel to this song (almost folksy), and it’s not just because they are singing in their mother tongue. I really think that if this has any chance of qualifying, they will have to rethink their staging, and more importantly their outfits (eek – looks like they raided my Amma’s… Read more »

Overall a well thought out song and performance. There’s so many stereotypes in your one single comment. Why is a slow folk song automatically “standard non eventful”? Why is an upbeat song “for younger audiences”? I love a good banger just as much as anyone else, but Reykjavíkurdætur was just messy and kinda trash. Iceland has sent much better bangers in past years.

One could argue that it was also their point tho. Their lyrics were clearly transgressive and channeled that type of feminism that does want people to feel uncomfortable to make themselves heard after being silent for too long. It’s just incredibly hilarious to me that people could possibly see a group of industrial BDSM rubber singers as less scary than just a bunch of girls dressed up in tinsel avant garde fashion lmao

I am very satisfied with the Icelandic choice!
I love the atmosphere of this song, their captivating voices, it’s a bit “wild west” in the land of glaciers and I really like the rhythm and it’s in Icelandic!!

Can Iceland make it to the final? I don’t really know but given that the SF 1 is weaker than the second, I would tend to say that they have their chance in any case I wish them!!
