Kelly Clarkson Snoop Dogg American Song Contest 2022 Hosts

It’s been years in the making. And on Monday the American Song Contest finally hits the airwaves in the United States.

Atlantic Records is acting as the exclusive music partner for the new competition. The label will release the competing songs in a series of weekly batches. The first lot of entries are due to land on Monday 21 March at 00:00 (midnight) ET / 21:00 PT — just a few hours before the first episode.

But on Friday NBC revealed short snippets of 10 of the acts singing their songs. In Eurovision-style we just have to ask: Which Week 1 artist and song are you most excited about?

Please note: Michael Bolton of Connecticut is competing in this heat, but he is not featured in the preview teaser. We have therefore removed him from this poll.

American Song Contest: Week 1 Song Previews

Arkansas – Kelsey Lamb with “Never Like This”

Connecticut – Michael Bolton with “Beautiful World”

Indiana – UG skywalkin with “Love In My City (feat. Maxie)”

Iowa – Alisabeth Von Presley with “Wonder”

Minnesota – Yam Haus with “Ready To Go”

Mississippi – Keyone Starr with “Fire”

Oklahoma – AleXa with “Wonderland”

Puerto Rico – Christian Pagán with “Loko”

Rhode Island – Hueston with “Held On Too Long”

Wisconsin – Jake’O with “Feel Your Own”

Wyoming – Ryan Charles with “New Boot Goofin’”

“Atlantic Records is thrilled to partner with NBC and all the artists competing on ‘American Song Contest,” says Atlantic Records President, West Coast Kevin Weaver.

“As an innovative music label, we are always looking for new ways to discover and showcase talent, and American Song Contest is the perfect stage for America to see the best of the best from each state and territory. We are honoured to be working with NBC, all of the incredibly talented artists and the entire American Song Contest team”.

I feel pretty hyped now. Excited to hear 56 new songs and get to know a lot of talents from all over the USA. NRK will broadcast the shows on Saturday evenings from 10:00 PM in Norway, so I guess it will be quite good considering it will be sent in the Prime time slot on a Saturday here even when we don’t participate 🙂

So sad……this comes out now. Iowa’s entry has already been released in 2017. This shouldn’t be the case. It’s my worry now that NBC were so desperate in immediately let all 50 states + 5 territories + DC compete, that they didn’t even do a proper background check on the songs. In any normal European national final or the Eurovision Song Contest this would’ve been disqualified already. I hope NBC sticks to this rule as well. For the sake of a clean and honest start of the competition: https://fb.watch/bT3t5Cprei/

We shouldn’t assume the rules are the same for both contests. I would say that there might not even be rules for the American contest, the producers just decide everything. If they say it’s okay, it’s okay.

GertFromNL

Reply to  Jonas

So….we aren’t striving for a contest in which the rules result an an equal playing field? What about the states that actually got the message and that, since September 2021, tried immensely hard to compose and produce an original song just…and only…for the American Song Contest? And then suddenly one state, Iowa, just dusts off an old song from 2017…. I find it cynical. If the producers of American Song Contest want to easily advertise this show with the #Eurovision brand, than also apply the same rules.

As an American, I have to say I am really disappointed. The production is wonderful, the PR so far is great, and even the enthusiasm by the artists themselves is encouraging. But, out of what we’ve seen, I really don’t like any of the songs. And I am afraid that if I didn’t like any of them, there will be others who share that feeling. And if this is someone’s first exposure to this contest, and all the songs don’t sound very good, there is a) no incentive to ever watch the show again and b) a horrible impression on… Read more »

From the preview it almost appeared as if that K-pop girl from Oklahoma was doing playback. On paper it should be the most certain winner, and staging wise it’s great. Yet it doesn’t emote at all to me. Currently, I am especially touched by the raw masculine country/rock ballad sang by Hueston. It’s authentic, pure and honest. It’s conveying emotions best from this rather so so list of states. Also Mississippi and Iowa seem to have an act that’s polished, and that emote best within their music genres. Puerto Rico really REALLY needs to take a look at Chanel from… Read more »

Ideally, but this is also a brand new series trying to build an audience, especially for a format that American audiences in general aren’t familiar with. He’ll still get equal treatment with the others when it comes to voting, but as most of these bigger names are more or less nostalgia acts (maybe with the exception of Jordan Smith, but that’s still cross-promotion with The Voice), part of the promotion is to try and give new viewers a reason to tune in. Not only sings on it, but sings on it and in the music video dresses up as Captain Jack Sparrow. Despite all those serious-sounding dramatic songs he tends to sing, he does seem to have a sense of humor and knows when to not take himself too seriously. Celine Dion has a similar personality, too, even though she sings music very similar to Michael Bolton’s.

You can really see the Melodifestivalen’s team all over this presentation wise, but that at least means we will get a good show. And on top of that, based on these performances, none of the artists seem to have phoned it in.
There is a lot of potential here, can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
Also it very obvious that the people calling this bad are saying that exclusively because it’s American.

From what I saw, I think Oklahoma has the most potential to do well in the competition (if not win), but Wisconsin’s kind of stuck out for me, and Wyoming’s is so out of left field that it could find a following. (Country rap isn’t really a new thing, though, if anyone’s heard of Cowboy Troy.) If Vote for the Worst was still around, I could totally see them starting a campaign to vote for Wyoming. I sadly see a LOT of negativity here, so I would like to point some things out: It’s the first season of ASC, and it’s a completely new show (in a new market/setting) with the challenges that follow that, so don’t judge to hard in the beginning. There are some systemic challenges that make it hard for the ASC to be more than another talent show, and I doubt if they can be overcome by sheer force: -states do have different characteristics but far less than European countries. Moldovan and Icelandic entries for example will never be the same, even if they both sing in English -all songs in English at ASC show how the ESC benefits from the languages in Europe, just by providing variety -in Europe every broadcaster has a delegation with often a burning desire to win and host next year. This energy, attention… Read more »

I agree to some points, BUT: The US is also culturally rich, from native, to European, to more modern immigrants, The US as a “country of immigrants” should be able to use different languages, (Louisiana French, Texan German, Irish, native languages) There are also state broadcasters, also PBS is the US public broadcaster (like the British BBC). Two problems: (1) PBS is not a state broadcaster. It’s not connected to the US government in any way. And (2) – and it’s VERY important to understand this – The US doesn’t have state broadcasters. At all. There’s nothing even remotely similar. That’s just not how the TV industry works here. External organizations that can be “responsible for the acts” simply don’t exist.

Scott

PBS receives funding from the federal government via the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. A good amount of the local PBS member stations are owned and/or funded by their state government in addition to receiving donations from viewers (i.e. KET, PBS Wisconsin, etc.) PBS and its member stations have a mandate to be neutral in their news coverage.

So yes PBS is the United States’ state broadcaster since it receives state & federal funding. However it behaves differently than most state broadcasters (like the CBC in Canada, BBC in the UK, etc.)

I think “public” is a better term to describe what PBS is for the most part over “state” as the latter term strongly suggests a level of federal control in the running of the network. 🙂

PBS is a publicly-funded media corporation. it literally receives much of its funding from “members like you” a.k.a. its viewers. They don’t have the resources to create a large-scale production such as ASC. Doing so would sacrifice much of the programming it has on offer and losing the trust of their viewers’ patronage.

We only have national broadcasters. State ones simply don’t exist. And PBS would be a terrible channel to put the contest on because PBS viewers aren’t the target audience for the contest AT ALL. NBC hosting the show was probably the best choice possible. The US may not be as linguistically diverse as Europe but given what I know about some of this year’s participants, I am expecting a handful of bilingual english-spanish songs. Spanish is the second most predominant language in our country after English. Any other languages fall far behind the two. It is not easy to get… Read more »

Yep, the closest thing we have to broadcasters at the state level are the network affiliates, and depending on the size of the state and its population, there are typically several affiliates for each of the major networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, The CW) in each state. They’re split up by media market, not state. For example, in Florida (where I live), there are at least 10 different NBC affiliates. The largest one is probably the one in Miami, but there are affiliates in Orlando (which is the media market I live in), Tampa, West Palm Beach, Panama City, Jacksonville,… Read more »

Well if this poll is anything to go by, I guess my state (Wisconsin) is not qualifying lol.

But then again most of you are Europeans so there’s bound to be differences in taste. (like Indiana scoring lowest for example, no surprise considering you never see that genre in ESC)

People criticizing vocals from the snippets here cannot help but make me laugh though because you cannot pretend that a handful of the people who have performed at ESC did not have terrible vocals

Funny you should mention “Michael Bolton” and “heavy metal”. He was primarily a hard rock singer in the early part of his career, and he didn’t make the switch to soft rock (or what we’d now call “adult contemporary”) until around the late 1980s. I found a music video of his from the early ‘80s, “Everybody’s Crazy”.

Rock is not mainstream in the US and hasn’t been for a long time. It’s not a niche genre necessarily, but it is quite separate from current popular culture. And as a scene it’s also very backwards looking, with on average an older crowd stuck on the artists and bands of decades past that will actively hate on anyone new. Maybe I’ll get lucky and a rock act or two will slip through on ASC, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get nothing.

I think I read somewhere that South Dakota’s act is a rock band. They’re from Sturgis, South Dakota, which is famous for its annual motorcycle rally. (And bikers love their rock music. Rock music (or at least more traditional rock music) hasn’t been a major Top 40 genre here for about the last 15 or 20 years. What some people now classify as “rock” (like Imagine Dragons, Twenty-One Pilots, Billie Eilish, and even Glass Animals, who have the current number one song in the country) is more or less pop or indie-leaning music that doesn’t necessarily fall under the mainstream pop umbrella (which I why I tend to refer to these acts as “alternative” rather than “alternative rock”, as it would have been labeled in the 1990s). I think the New York Times article only mentioned that the Jury members are barred from voting for their own state. It didn’t say anything about how the public vote will work, which makes me think the public voting will work much like how it’s done for Junior Eurovision. Just replying to myself because I think I screwed up a little bit on describing Junior Eurovision’s public voting system. What I meant was that total points available is determined by the number of points a country can award to other countries times the number of countries competing. For example, the number of points that one country could award to other countries was the sum of 12, 10, 8 and 7 all the way down to 1 point. That total is 58 points. Multiply that by, say, 15 total countries competing, and you’d get 870 total points available. Presuming they… Read more »

They have multiple voting lines: The NBC App, the ASC homepage on the NBC website and TikTok. TV Guide also explained further in an article that a version of the ESC points system will be utilized so that all competing states and territories will have equal weight. It’s a given that everyone across the country will be voting so they won’t limit who can vote per heat but I would assume that all of the votes from the public will be compiled and turned into a percentage-based set of points. What’s up with all the dancers doing freestyle? And do they really think their act is gonna be better if they have tens of them?
Alexa was definitely not singing live. I mean maybe she was but not in this clip. UG skywalkin were ‘singing’ over (or should I say under) their own voices on the track.
The whole thing is surprisingly messy.
I’m not watching before I see the reactions because I’m already expecting the worse. This doesn’t feel like Eurovision at all and I’m sick and tired of their ‘singing’ (read: sob story) shows. I’m bummed.
