The Eurovision 2022 season saw a boom in national finals, with 27 countries using a show to select their entry for the contest. Although we now have 27 winners who will move onto Eurovision, many of the other entries that didn’t make it will remain on our playlists for some time. To celebrate these acts, it’s time for our countdown of Team Wiwi’s top national final songs of Eurovision 2022, now entering the top 10.

As usual, the team from wiwibloggs have voted for their favourite songs that competed in the national finals for Eurovision 2022 but were not selected. Note these are our favourite songs, not songs we think should have gone to Eurovision.

After reviewing the 100s of songs that were entered into this year’s national finals, we finally settled on our top 50 – it wasn’t easy . And now, it’s time to reveal our top picks.

Our national final Hall of Fame currently includes:

But, who will join them?

Find out below with the conclusion of this year’s countdown!

Team Wiwi’s top national final songs of Eurovision 2022: 10 to 1

10. La Rappresentante di Lista – “Ciao Ciao” (Sanremo)

What we said: “Ciao ciao” is an over-the-top tale about the end of the world as seen through the eyes of La Rappresentante di Lista: a colourful apocalypse in which we must quickly come to terms with the general crisis underway, including climate change and social upheaval. The musical production of the song draws on a vintage imagery, bringing LRDL to a dancehall of the ’70s, between funk and dance. There are explosions of sound, much like scenes from a film one after another, moving from urban atmospheres to tribal rhythms. In the lyrics we find the irony of a generation that looks at the future with disenchantment. Is there time for one last wild dance before the apocalypse? (Cristian)

9. Alban Ramosaj – “Theje” (Festivali i Këngës)

What we said: Easily the most impressive male-sung song of the lot. Alban Ramosaj serves us a song full of power and passion. I love how the first verse properly simmers, then bubbles and builds up to the explosion in the chorus. And it continues! It is a relentless song that holds you in a lock for three minutes and four seconds and does not let go. Nor do you want it to. Absolutely brilliant and it comes with a big chance. (Tom)

8. SOA – “Seule” (Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez)

What we said: With SOA, music is a family affair. The brother and sister duo, comprised of LudySoa and Nathan, have been singing together since the respective ages of nine and six. SOA intend to compete in the final of Eurovision France 2022 with the song “Seule” (“Alone”), a track written in 2019. While Nathan was singing the chorus in his room, his sister LudySoa fell in love with the lyrics whilst listening on the other side of the door. The two of them then completed the song, which speaks of of a universal feeling – that of loneliness. (Oranie)

7. Alina Pash – “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” (Vidbir)

What we said: It’s her first effort to go to Eurovision, but she came prepared with “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors”! Alina Pash’s song bares the same title as the famous 1965 film that depicts the tragic life story of a Hutsul Ukrainian man. In the 1960s, the film was progressive and controversial for its strong depiction of local culture, traditions and customs at a time when national culture was repressed. Alina sings that, at times, the history of Ukraine seemed so depressive that Dante could have written a Divine Tragedy instead of his famous Divine Comedy. In the last part before the chorus, Alina says Ukrainians are not dependent on the tragedy of the past, but can instead create a better future for themselves. (Renske)

6. Cazzi Opeia – “I Can’t Get Enough” (Melodifestivalen)

Cazzi Opeia can’t get enough of her loved one, and we can’t get enough of her Melodifestivalen 2022 entry. The Swedish singer took us over the candyfloss rainbow with her bright, pastel-themed stage show. Add a catchy pop tune to go with it, and Cazzi soared to the grand final upon her first Melfest outing. (Jonathan)

5. Rigoberta Bandini – “Ay Mamá” (Benidorm Fest)

What we said: “Ay Mamá” is a modern anthem. The song’s progression from slow ballad to choir hymn and the way it gains momentum as seconds go by makes me want to jump from my chair and scream “Amen!”. The magic of this song is the way Rigoberta manages to turn a simple pop song into both an earworm, with the playful “Mamamamama”, and a tune that moves the masses. The gravitas this song is getting in Spain makes it one to watch. It’s faring better than anyone else on streaming platforms, and is often played in private broadcaster Telecinco, one of Spain’s most watched TV channels. (Luis)

4. Klara Hammarström – “Run To The Hills” (Melodifestivalen)

What we said: Klara is a star. If she doesn’t go to Eurovision this year, then she will eventually. Run to the hills takes the crumpet for me this Melfest. Damn Klara is a powerful lady – Wonder Woman eat your heart out! It’s a pop banger and Klara looks spectacular, though I will say she does tire a little bit near the end of the song. But if she gets her breathing right on the night this could head to Turin. (Tom)

Previous top national final songs: “Nobody” (#36 in 2020)

3. LIAMOO – “Bluffin” (Melodifestivalen)

Sweden is the master of slick, contemporary music production. This was showcased once again through “Bluffin”, which gave LIAMOO his third direct ticket to the Melodifestivalen grand final. A favourite amongst the international juries at Melfest 2022, it was also a favourite of our international team at wiwibloggs. The club beats meant this wasn’t just any re-hash of the Swedish-pop formula. Add on a professional stage show that even the world’s top artists would be jealous of, and LIAMOO delivered a standout entry. (Jonathan)

2. Medina – “In i dimman” (Melodifestivalen)

What we said:  Different is the word and I love it! Swedish pop meets reggaeton half way in this upbeat banger. It’s a party on stage and Medina are so much fun! “In i dimman” is guaranteed to get the public on their feet in Italy if this qualifies – even though a Eurovision audience will have no idea what they are saying. Swedish songs will always have an outside chance of qualifying but this could do it. (Tom)

1. BESS – “Ram pam pam” (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu)

What we said: “Ram pam pam” is exactly how my heart beated when I heard this for the first time. Fierce, feisty, fabulous, Finnish-language pop – what more could a Eurofan ask for? Bess has delivered a self-assured rock-pop number that doesn’t give a damn. That’s no easy task given that the whole song is built around a hook which, in the hands of a lesser artist, could become completely cheesy and camp. This is a foot-stomping, fist-in-the-air belter. And it’s little wonder that this is still top of Finland’s Spotify charts all these weeks after its release. (Padraig)

Our top national final songs of Eurovision 2022 ranking is determined by independent votes from a panel of wiwibloggers. They are Jonathan, Cinan, Youyou, Diego, William, Pablo, Oliver, Edd, Antony, Deban, Sebastian, Luis, Antranig, Padraig, Tom, Renske, Lauren, Robyn and Ron.

Sorry not sorry that The Rasmus is representing Finland. That song by Bess brings nothing new to the Eurotable. Pop is now just like microplastics, absofreakinglutely everywhere, and it’s time to start rebelling against what the current musical industry’s force feeding us.

And The Rasmus are original?!? As someone from Finland, I am ashamed of how obviously calculated the whole thing with The Rasmus is. Calculated and soulless. The singer put the black feathers from “In The Shadows” times back in his hair. “In The Shadows” was pure calculation, too. Back then, the obvious plan was that The Rasmus should get a piece of the action when dark pop rock from Finland was all the rage in the European charts, thanks to bands like HIM. So, the singer’s hair was dyed from blond to black, these ridiculous feathers were put in his… Read more »

Some songs I think deserved a spot but I didn’t see them (maybe I oversaw them)

  • Flower Of Sorrow (N. Macedonia)
  • Call Me From The Cold (Lithuania)
  • Pay My Own Bills (Latvia)
  • Deluzional (Albania)
  • Before You’re 6ft. Under (Lithuania)
  • Dokad (Poland)
  • Tiramisu (San Marino)
  • We Are One (Australia)
  • Forgive Me (Oprosti) (Croatia)
  • Running Out Of F* Time (Czech Rep.)
  • Independiente (Slovenia)
  • Mar No Fim (Portugal)
  • Þaðan Af (Iceland)
  • Jezinky (Czech Rep.)
  • Here For Love (Croatia)

I could name more but these quickly popped up

My faves from this set:

  1. Alban Ramosaj – Theje: I hope he gets to come to Eurovision!
  2. LIAMOO – Bluffin’: Hopefully 4th time is a charm next year!
  3. Medina – In i dimman: This is interesting!
  4. BESS – Ram pam pam: OMG WHY DID THIS NOT WIN IN FINLAND, Bess needs to get to come to Eurovision next year!

My number would probably be Bess or Liamoo!

Disappointed. Way to much songs from Melodifestivalen, especially in the year when MF didn’t achieve its own standards and was not dominant nacional final selection as in previous years.

And it’s the amerification. I remember the lad with the backpack and glasses doing a Bieber. Irony of his German Ancestry…Poland into Timberlake and he even popped up in an interval a few years ago. Even now America wants their own song contest..America hasn’t made many Eurovision entrants famous yet they can easily hear it. I wonder why. Likely because their other material isn’t very good? why did Celine Dion and Abba make it and not many else?

It is not amercinized. It is Swedish! Why cant people accept swedes for what they are. We are mansplained by otters telling us how we should be. Melodifestivalen has always been a kind of cheezy. We like our scandipop that we exported to the US.

I guess the reason why many songs from Melodifestivalen are in the top 10 is because wiwibloggers who voted didn’t see all national finals. San Remo was a source of much better songs. Surprisingly Estonia and Spain too. Melodifestivalen used to be good, but since 3 or 4 years ago it lost its charm.

So the top 10 is actually worse than the top 20. I’m missing songs from the Czech NF. Especially “Running Out of F* Time” and “Jezinky”. My top 10 this season: 1.     Isaac Sene – Kuuma jäbä (8.25) – UMK 2.     Tanxugueiras – Terra (8.25) – Benidorm Fest 3.     Giudi – “Jezinky” (7.75) – ESCZ 4.     ANNABELLE – “Runnin’ Out Of Freakin’ Time” (7.75) – ESCZ 5.     Blanca Paloma – Secreto de agua (7.75) – Benidorm Fest 6.     Inspo – “A Happy Place” (7.5) – Supernova 7.     Skywalker – “Way Down” (7.5) – ESCZ 8.     Alex Parker & Bastien – “All this love” (7.5) – Selectia nationala 9.     Voyager… Read more »

As a Melfest fan, I’m quite happy that there a lot of songs in this top 50, but let’s face the truth, there’s always been more than five Melfest songs in these lists each year. Not to mention Dotter was #1 twice in a row. There are definitely much better songs in FdC, Benidorm, EMA, Sanremo and so on. As a very huge Sanremo fan, I’m quite disappointed that there’s really less entries from there (though I got a huge shock when I saw Virale in the list, I never thought that could happen!) Atleast I can console myself that… Read more »

I don’t know if I missed it, but I’m a little sad that Ruta loop’s call me from the call didn’t make the top 100 here. It was actually my favorite song from the Lithuanian national final, with the actual winner sentimentai coming in second.

But you know what, I don’t care. I have my own favorite National final songs From the season and if I did 100 list I’ll probably different from the way wiwibloggs list, and that’s OK.

Interesting list, but some odd choices/rankings imo.

Some of my favourite eliminated songs:

Ovunque Sarai by Irama and O Forse Sei Tu by Elisa, from Sanremo Festival;
Lele by Katy Rain, from Moldovan selection;
Nuit Pauline by Pauline Chagne, from France
and
Rave Med De Hårde Drenge by Fuld Effekt, from Denmark (would have been a much better choice for Turin, I think)

Then I started to get slightly addicted to their back catalogue – you should check out their single “Ostani” released in January. And then the live performance which was fantastic. I love the band, love the song, it probably isn’t right for Eurovision but that doesn’t matter, I have found a new obsession! 2. This year we definitely reacted differently to many songs. As you predicted, I didn’t rate well most of these entries. Then again, as I said before, featuring some ”under the radar” songs on top lists can only be good. This is your list, not mine, or an aggregator one. I’ll concentrate on the what we agree on now: Bad Baby is a pretty cool song. Some others went higher on my MGP list, but I like it. It’s an easily memorable and fun song. Also, as far as MESC went for me this year, Into the Fire was among the… Read more »

If we stop to thing, it’s perfectly natural for our lists to be so different one from another. This year we had possibly the largest ever pool of entries to chose from, given the amount of countries going for national finals and the increase (in some cases very exaggerated) of entries participating on some of them. We should also take into account that in our personal lists we could pick songs that are very niche, while when we rank Eurovision entries most of them already went to a process of being approved by different groups of people. I wonder if… Read more »

i wouldn’t have been able to guess most of these! I had Fuld Effekt in my top 50 though and it was my Danish winner. It was definitely great. E-An-Na and Viktor both had an argument to be much better choices for Eurovision than the actual songs that were picked. Otherwise, you’ve actually gotten a couple of songs that were at the bottom of my ranking of their national selections: Le Serpentine and VIS Limunada. I also had NaMiNal in my “unprofessional pile of awful” in Moldova. Glad he earnt a fan though! Your top 50 overall is kinda incredible.… Read more »

I found Melfest quite dull this year so… I don’t get this TOP10. Also, the Estonian national selection had pretty good entries (sad to see they are not higher), and the Polish one too? Not to talk about Sanremo that at least had 5+ songs better than some chosen here (Emma, Sangiovanni, Noemi, Michele Bravi, Irama, Elisa…) but I am happy for Bess, I loved her performance! At least it’s a #1 I enjoy.

Controversial statement but is it fair to have Alina’s song on here? She got the ticket to Eurovision but she had to withdraw due to her own actions. None of the other songs were selected for Eurovision and are therefore eligible but since she already was going to Eurovision, it seems a bit weird

Oh and logically, since Kalush can’t appear on this list, then it makes sense to me that Alina can.

Maruv was eligible due to similar standards. Since it didn’t go to ESC, it turned into a song in a NF, hence made it eligible.

I love you guys—but this year’s list is incredibly shortsighted on so many levels. I think most people would agree that this year’s Melfest was one of the weakest in ages and would probably would not even rank in the top 5 of National finals this year. You always make note about Melfest having so many “by the books” and “soulless” entries. And how unfortunate it is when a country buys songs that sound like Melfest rejects. Examples to underrated national finals here:festival da canção which was amazing this year, EMA which had a number of quality songs, San Remo entries being too low and Dora(Marko should have been here) .
I suggest for next year to have some round for each national final that at least we’ll have one song from each.

I’d say that the general quality of Melfest is on a similar level for the couple of years now, but that this is the first time that most of the right entries qualified to the finals, so the *finals itself* feels much stronger.
I agree, some NFs were better for me – Sanremo, MGP, Benidorm, UMK, FdC – to name a few.

polish selection as well. Paranoia and Karolina lizer were good.
And ofcours, Eli huli was missing here.

Interesting – I though that Annabelle would be somewhere on the list considering it scored higher with wiwi jury then Elis Mraz, but oh well. I guess it fell out of favour.
