Ukraine’s Eurovision 2022 entry Kalush Orchestra will be able to travel to Turin for the contest in May. The Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne announced the news on their official Instagram account. Next to that, they are also allowed to leave the country for a promo tour.
Previously, the Eurovision organisers had agreed to exempt Ukraine from the requirement to record a live-on-tape performance.

Ever since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the musicians have not been able to perform together and prepare for the contest. They have been helping the Ukrainian population in different ways, through voluntary work and participation in Kyiv’s territorial defence.
Naturally, questions arose about whether Kalush Orchestra would be able to participate in the contest. Not only due to the devastation of the war, but also because of Ukraine’s imposed material law, which makes it impossible for men to leave the country (women and children are permitted to leave). However, the six members of the group have received permission from the state authorities to leave Ukraine for their performance in Turin.

Kalush Orchestra perform “Stefania” in Lviv
On Saturday, the six-piece group reunited in Lviv, one of the biggest cities of Western Ukraine. Ever since the start of the war, many residents from bombarded areas have sought refuge in the town.
On the city’s main square, Kalush Orchestra delivered a rendition of their Eurovision 2022 song “Stefania”. This marked the first public performance of the song since they participated in Ukraine’s preselection back in early February.
After the performance, lead singer Oleh Psiuk said that the performance in Lviv was meant as an in-person rehearsal. Prior to it, they had only been able to rehearse online. Fans will also note that the group now has a new backing rapper.

Kalush Orchestra to embark on a tour prior to Eurovision
As Oleh noted, on 3 April, the group will announce dates for a set of performances abroad. Suspilne wrote on their official Instagram:
“Kalush Orchestra have agreed to participate in promotional concerts before Eurovision. The band intends to gather donations to support Ukraine. The details of the promotional tour and events that Kalush Orchestra will participate in will be announced in the coming days.”
“‘We want to show the world community Ukrainian music, our spirit and how unbreakable we are. We really need support in this difficult time,’ the band says.”
If they can make it to Turin, I think Ukraine will open the grand final.

I don’t think it’s poor treatment per say and just an artistic choice. Think of it like SIA with her giant wig shrouding her face. In fact, aside from the vocalist, we don’t even know how the rest of the band looks like.
He’s not a child, if the guy wouldn’t feel comfortable to perform in this costume he wouldn’t do it. It’s a grown a*s man that decided that he’s cool with appearing that way. Why you assume he’s a baby that’s doing it against his will?
It’s an artistic choice to make the cutie in the pink hat stand out more.
In the NF it looked like the flautist was the main singer and not the cutie. The cutie was almost like a guest brought in to do just the rap.
This makes the cutie more prominent and makes it clearer the cutie is the frontman of the band.

Everybody is talking about them getting mostly pity votes, but the song is actually good so I think people will definitely vote for them because of the song. Also in 1993 Croatia came 15th, Bosnia & Herzegovina came 16th and Slovenia came 22nd which suggests in the past that juries haven’t given pity votes.

The war in Balkans as bad as it was didn’t have media coverage, the same way as we do today. Wars and conflicts are having more social effects and impact because of technology. Mobile smart phones, tick tock, instagram and facebook etc didn’t exist back then. Ukraine will run away with the win this year, not just because of solidarity and support for Ukraine, but also because the song is very good. Expect the highest points ever for a win! I don’t care who wins this year. It’s all a loss for Europe. Russia is grabbing you by the balls and cutting off the blood supply with gas/oil/nuke threats. They have so much power over you. Looks like they win ESC (at least, that’s what their media will say).
Russia worth nothing without the natural resources that were on its territory by luck, and they will end eventually. Russians did not evolve their economy beyond digging in the ground and they will suffer the consequences. Europe will find alternatives, and mighty Russia will be stuck with its resources than nobody will be buying.
If Ukraine wins, which country will host Eurovision 2023?
They usually suggest the honors to the 2nd place, then if the country who came 2nd declines, they pretty much open it for any country. I guess a country with no financial or logistical problems that can organize the event with minimum effort will be chosen.

I played this song for my very danish boyfriend who is usually highly critic of Eurovision songs in general. HE LOVES IT, not because it’s Ukranian, but because it’s a freaking bop. He will probably vote for them in May, not out of pity, but because it’s good.

As a Ukrainian, I can truly say that many, many of people in our country like eurovision so much. We are always looking forward to it. And participating in it will distract many people and cheer up. Doesn’t always have to be that way. Germany ( 2011), Azerbaijan (2013), Denmark (2014) and Sweden (2016) have the most recent top-10 finishes the year after winning. And Italy’s recent record tells me they will add another, EASILY.

It was the reasonable thing to do. Of course they’re doing the best to help their country from the ground with more practical activities, but they will also help a lot by participating of a big international competition to show everybody that Ukraine and their culture are still alive and strong. It will be great to boost the national morale and to keep the rest of the world paying attention to their situation and hopefully trying to help.
I’m so so happy for them. The ukrainian people so have something to look forward to and them being able to promote the song. As for winning? Rap isn’t for everyone, but the chorus is catchy AF and the melody will have people up and dancing. I think this will be enough to drown out any pity votes.

If we judge only by looking at the song (and even a performance) it is very difficult to see Ukraine being in top 10 this year. But, obviously, we all know that current political situation IS going to boost their final rank, so they might be placed very high thanks to that reason only.

All of you DO realize that in a case of Ukraine winning the contest, the runner-up will be the most likely host? Ukraine now needs all the resources to defend themselves, and then to re-build their country, so the chances of also financing ESC are not big. It’s just not a priority, nor it should be. So, it also matters who ends-up second just as much.
I don’t think that’s how it would work. It should be opened up to any broadcaster that wants it, or is best able for it. It costs so much money, the EBU shouldn’t pressure a broadcaster when they have not even won.
It hasn’t happened in over forty years, but it did happen three times in the 1970s. It never went to the country who came second.
The EBU would likely follow what happened in 2015 at Junior Eurovision when Italy declined to host after winning in 2014 so the runner-up Bulgaria did

I hope that all you are saying is true. I hope that the war is over tomorrow. However, I doubt that they’ll have time, energy, and resources to put full on in ESC, when so many building need to be rebuilt, and so many people need their homes back. Of course, if they somehow find the resources, and decide to host, it would be a fantastic thing.

I think you are massively underestimating the televote score. It’s going to be huge.
I believe in individual freedom. A vote is a vote, and each individual has the freedom to motivate it the the way the individual seems fit.
First of all, Eurovision fades into insignificance in the face of of war. The people of Europe can vote for whatever reason they want. That is the point. If they want Ukraine to win, who the hell are you to tell them they can’t? If Ukraine win, you don’t get decide whether they are worthy winners or not.
Given that they’re representing Ukraine and the fact that it’s a considerable source of soft power for Ukraine, I’m not surprised they were allowed to go to Turin. I’m surprised they got an exemption for the promotional tour though.

If the juries put Stefania in the top 3, we will all know it’s purely for political reasons. There is no way they’d rank Stefania that well otherwise.
Ukraine was one of the favourite after Alina’s winning perfomance; when she declined to represent her country Ukraine dropped to 7th position by the bookies.
Songs have won from further back than that in the bookies odds before.
Never mind. They were 10th or 11th exactly a month before the invasion. They jumped to 2nd two weeks before the invasion.
Vidbir was only twelve days before the invasion. We only knew it was definitely going to be Stefania just two days before the invasion. Being 10th or 11th a month before doesn’t tell us much, if anything.

This is such a useless thing to speculate about right now. Let’s just get them to Turin, have them perform in person and give them the chance to demonstrate that Ukraine is still alive and fighting.
And IF they win (which is just the bookies talking at the moment), I’m sure some there’s enough goodwill out there for a few big broadcasters to sit down together and work something out.
So far, Lviv has been relatively untouched, compared to parts eastward. If it remains that way, and they force a general retreat by the enemy (thus ending the war) before winter returns, and they win this year’s ESC, they could quite possibly still host the contest next year in Lviv.

I would honestly prefer it if they were able to record their performance or go to a country like Poland for the finals. I’m not sure how they were able to do something like this but it shows how high calliber Eurovision is and how the Ukrainian government see it as a chance to spread their message.

Women can’t leave the country normally either. Nobody can. They don’t just hop on the first flight or train, they might need to travel for days and then queue for a long time. They’re refugees. That’s not normal.
Reports from Ukraine say that both men and women can participate in an active army duty or in other types of service, such as providing food, news, care of the elderly and children, ect. As it should be, as gender shouldn’t determine one’s role in crisis. Being a soldier or a civilian should be an option equally possible for everyone. Incredible mix of traditional folk and contemporary rap, a celebration of modern Ukraine, just as they did last year with folk and dance, showing us all that there is a place in modern world for Ukrainian identity and song.

I reckon Melovin tanked with the jury due to his poor English and lack of “Big vocal moments” rather than Under The Ladder not being good.
Kinda? He had his vocal moment at the end. It was just a goofy song with unintelligible lyrics and over-the-top staging. It did exactly as well as I expected it to with the jury and televote.
There are so few songs I’d call “typically Eurovision.” Even just a few years ago, I never would’ve imagined hearing an entry like the Netherlands, Portugal, or Iceland at Eurovision. Countries are finally getting less afraid of embracing intimate songs.
Also listen to any of this year’s songs after watching 2001 or 2002 and see if your opinion changes.

Recently, I saw a video on Youtube of a outdoor concert held in Lviv which was abruptly disrupted by a loud air raid siren.
