Rosa Linn – “Snap” (Armenia Eurovision 2022)

Review: Rosa Linn – “Snap”

Antranig: Armenia is trying something different this year and I’m here for it. “Snap” might not reinvent the wheel but it has a catchy hook and an inherently uplifting quality. The lyrics in the chorus are nothing beyond Songwriting 101 but they’re memorable and fun. This song will definitely stand out in any recap with its distinctive qualities. It remains to be seen how far it can go but qualification for the final should be likely.

Score: 8.5

Angus: In a year where twee folky female soloists are in abundance, Armenia lands somewhere in the hotly contested middle of the pack. “Snap” has a cute feel and anthemic chorus, but it also meanders towards a wet climax that doesn’t knock things out of the park. And really that’s what holds it back: we’re not going anywhere with this. A pretty listen, but forgotten in the broader field of songs this year.

Score: 6

Tom: “Snap” certainly was unexpected in the best possible way for me. I was expecting something cool, edgy and ethnic – which I love. But I got cool, contemporary and dare I say, more mainstream – which I also love! This is the type of tune that I will be in the mood for long after the contest is over. It has a lovely relaxing vibe to the song, that is perfect for a lazy Sunday in bed. I was also one of the many people comparing “Snap” to the Lumineers. The sound is very similar but that’s not a bad thing. They are a successful group and Rosa Linn is doing it all solo. Power to her and I can’t wait to see this in Turin.

Score: 7.5

Josh: “Snap” is a song that tries to strike an authentic emotional chord. It has some good points — Rosa Linn brings honesty to the lyrics, and the beat throughout the song gets you toe-tapping, for a few seconds. The opening beats make you think the song is really going to go somewhere, but it never really reaches its ultimate destination. Every time she sings “I might — Snap”, it’s as if a big “reset” button gets pressed, and all the built-up momentum in the song gets lost for me. By the second or third time this happens, I’m over it. The ending impression is: this is a decidedly average effort.

Score: 5.5

Natalie: I love to hear a song that just does everything right. The instrumentation, the vocals, the lyrics, and most of all: the emotions. The chorus is energetic, anthemic and miraculous in how it manages to carry the deep emotional weight of the song so well. Rosa Linn is an amazing performer. It makes me so happy to see Armenia do something low-key and beautiful like this. I really hope to see this shine in Turin.

Score: 9.5

This song may be nothing spectacular or groundbreaking, but it has slowly worked its way all the way up to my Top 5. Her live performances are what sold it for me, she has a great voice and relaxed and charming presence. In Madrid, she had the guts to just play acoustic guitar and sing on her own, and ended up sounding better than most other participants.

This one has been one of my biggest surprises. I was expecting nothing and gave me everything. She’s a great performer, with a great personality and, even if her songs sounds everything but armenian, people will like her. Sure qualifier and I hope she ends up getting a decent score in the final. 8/10 from me.

Love the lyrics, and her voice, but musically, does this sound like a bank commercial to anyone else?

The last place 8n running order literally saved her from elimination. Juries will love it, the public will award her an 11-13th place and she will qualify, probably a 7-10th place overall.

I’m happy Armenia is back, but I miss the old Armenia. Still waiting for Jan-Jan’s sequel…

By far the biggest grower for me. It’s just nice to have a more relaxing song after all the pop songs, so it’s a 9/10 for me

That is actually a really high placing for this entry. I think Armenia would be very happy if it were to achieve that. It is possible if listeners attach to this moreso than the songs that are similar to it.

That didn’t aged well, didn’t it. It’s the most successful Eurovision song this year by extremely FAR.

It’s a feel good, easy-to-listen kind of song with some nostalgic vibes added to the mix. “Snap” wouldn’t be too out of place in one of my playlist but I don’t really think it is competitive enough to stand out. As easy to listen it is, I think it is also easy to forget for a regular listener. There’s nothing in it that makes one stop and listen or vote for it. If it would have been sent by another country I would be talking about a NQ but coming from Armenia it might get through… and I’ll be rooting… Read more »

I actually like every single thing about “Snap”. Rosa Linn’s voice, the lyrics, the production, the chorus, the low-key vibes, the music video… It feels like an honest effort, resulting in a song that provides me a good time when I’m listening to it. But it’s also true that none of those elements particulary stands out to my ears. In a different year, this would probably separate itself more from the pack and get my affection for it, but in 2022 there are a couple of countries going for a similar vibe in ways I consider more compelling. 7/10

I think a large part of my indifference about this song is similar to your final thought, in that, I just think whatever this is serving, I’m getting better elsewhere.

This entry is a dark horse- if the staging is right – it could really work. The danger for Armenia this year is the powerhouse that is Portugal. It may cancel itself out because it’s image is similar to Maro’s. The difference is that Maro’s collaboration and lyrics are almost sure to be on point on the night. I do admire Armenia for choosing this entry , I really like it and wish it well.

For me personally this is one of the better songs of semi final 1. It’s not a winning song, I do know that, but I do think it can qualify for the grand final.

It’s sweet and sad at the same time. I like the indie vibe. The running order slot and good live vocals make me pretty certain of it qualifying. 7/10.

The song itself is REALLY well written. Rosa sings well live and the song hits SO HARD towards the end. It’s a very personal song. You can sense the fire and energy in the lyrics yet musically its very laid back. For a Zoomer, something about it is quite nostalgic, especially the piano at some parts of the chorus and the keyboard/synth running down on the last chorus which I LOVE. I hope to see Rosa Linn in the final!

Even though it’s coming across quite well in the live performances, overall, I find it a disappointing entry. I have higher expectations for Armenia and usually look forward to something a bit more individual but this feels like it could be sent by any country (in particular, it sounds like something Denmark might end up sending – actually considering Denmark’s actual entry this year, they might do well to try and steal it). Rosa-Linn does absolutely fine with what she’s got to work with here but I wouldn’t expect anything less from an artist with associations to Tamar Kaprelian. Vocally,… Read more »

I enjoyed reading both of your reviews. I feel like they are a bit longer than they were last year, which is great. 🙂 I actually like Armenia quite a bit, even if I get that ”campfire vibe” can get too low-key and noncompetitive. I find this a much better effort than similar examples like Denmark 2020 or Netherlands 2004. I guess these entries work better with a single performer, as a lack of chemistry can really bring them down. So far, Rosa holds her own quite well. That said, this can go either way in the contest, considering how… Read more »

I think this year, the wiwi jury has come out after Groot’s reaction videos, so I’m already in full musical discussion mode. XD Non-competitive is a great word to use and does apply to entries like this. I often wonder if sending a song like this, where basic qualification is the one-and-only goal, is better than sending a song intended to challenge for the win and then falls short. I would love to know exactly what the delegations are thinking about their own entries behind the scenes. I think if this were in SF2, I’d be happier for this to… Read more »

ARMENIA – Nobody expected a cute and low-key entry like this from Armenia. They are usually known for being very slick, and focused on having an instant impact. But this little country-pop number perhaps does the trick. The melody is very hummable and relaxing, which serves as a nice juxtaposition to its more resounding lyrics. There is something authentic and unpretentious here. Rosa Linn’s sweet stage presence elevates it. I can see it being performed at a campfire and everyone singing along. The chorus has a really fun rhythm, and the enumeration helps with its memorability. It’s not a song… Read more »

2 out of 2 of agreement between us so far (I mean, 7 and 7,5 are almost the same thing, right?). Let’s enjoy while it lasts, because you mentioned on a different post that a certain entry is in your top 5 and I’m beeting it will be our biggest disagreement this year, since it won’t maybe even reach 25th on mine. But don’t worry, because the fandom is mostly on your side about it.

I was underwhelmed when this was revealed (mostly because of the long wait), but I’m really enjoying it currently. She has tons of charisma while performing live and if they don’t overdo the staging this could survive SF1’s “girl with a guitar fight.” 7,5/10

Forgot to mention that I also think that it’s very catchy, the “heart” hook will likely stay with the audience, especially with them performing last.

Armenia – Usually this wouldn’t be my cup of tea, but I really enjoy the song. Though the lyrics are somewhat basic, it doesn’t really affect the song overall and judging by how Rosa Linn’s been doing at the pre-parties I think this could definitely be in the grand final. 7/10

I will enjoy and appreciate reading all of yours, but I myself am not really up to job of writing reviews worth reading. I know, however, you will all be relieved to hear that my highly prestigious star system is returning for another year. Bronze, silver, with a select few being awarded the much coveted gold. Sadly, some songs will not receive any star.

I have had reporters camped out on my doorstep for the last week, trying to get the story first. My lips remained sealed. All will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The lyrics of this song come across to me as more angry than the music is. If she’s really on the verge of snapping, why is the melody so cheerful? Anyhow, the good news is that this is well-produced and good for what it is. I enjoy listening to it, even though the melody is a bit difficult to sing along to. However, I am not feeling the emotions that the lyrics convey; perhaps that is my own failing, but I can’t help but feel it’s because there’s something missing from the song. P.S. Canadians will probably love this song.… Read more »

I think this song kind of lacks impact, but makes up for it with a pleasant folky sound that feels welcoming and plausible. For me it’s a 6.5/10 and I think this will qualify if they stage it right. I hope they don’t mess it up like with Walking Out

7. Armenia – Rosa Linn – Snap – 8.5/10 – this has a surprisingly compelling understated quality. The song’s gentle acoustic-guitar led approach transports me down the long road to a reflective yet self-confident horizon. There is a quiet defiance in the song which feels at the same time both vulnerable and strong, a bittersweet tale of a hurtful past mixed with an optimistic future. I feel this could be a powerful lighters-in-the-air moment in Turin.

I do agree with you that due to the running order and the quality of the live performances that Rosa-Linn has given so far, that the crowd-in-attendance are going to go for this. Audience reaction has been known to move televoters, too.

It still hasn’t really grown on me but it’s for sure enjoyable. Indie-ish vibes but also accessibble to the majority. There’s a good melody and the chorus is very memorable but i don’t really like the verses.

This can def become a grower if the rumors about an amazing staging will be confirmed. If it’s not, I’ll never understand how they didn’t let another song to close the semifinal.

6th place: Armenia: Armenia’s song was a grower for me. I liked it since I first listened to it but it took some time for it to land in my top 10. Same as with Croatia, the country-folk vibe of this song really elevates it in my eyes since I am a fan of the genre. The use of the word ‘snap’ is also well-thought and the music video is also nice. If the staging lives up to it I will be thrilled. Performing last in the semi will definitely help Armenia qualify and I am all for it! The… Read more »

I also found the music video concept to be one of the most interesting things about this entry when it was released and hope that some elements of it remain in the staging for Turin. I don’t know how much of it they can really use, but it’s Armenia. They’re pretty good at getting creative with their presentation.

A flying house at the Eurovision stage 🙂 . Ok now being realistic, it surely is difficult to use everything from the music video in their live performance. But the main elements like the smoke, the casual clothes, Rosa with her guitar and above all the calm and cute general atmosphere would definitely help get the song’s message and feeling across.
