The Eurovision 2022 season is now in full swing and no doubt fans will have the songs from this year’s contest on repeat until we crown a winner in May. But that doesn’t mean we forget about the artists from past contests – they’re still brining us a lot of new music to enjoy.

Contrary to the commonly perpetuated myth about the song contest killing careers, we’re always thrilled to report that singers associated with Eurovision are thriving.

Here is our latest weekly roundup with a selection of just some of the songs and music videos released recently by Eurovision stars.

New music from Eurovision artists: 2022 | Week 16

MARO – “we’ve been loving in silence”

It’s been a busy week for MARO. To begin with, Portugal’s Eurovision 2022 star has released the new solo single “we’ve been loving in silence”. It’s a chilled indie offering with a very gradual build towards the final chorus. MARO sings about the time she’s spending with her lover in bed, and that she doesn’t plan on racing off to do anything else: “Oh we’ve been here for a while / Haven’t seen the sun come out, oh / We’ve been loving in silence / Drawing with our bodies”. The music video premieres at 22:00 BST (23:00 CEST) on Sunday. You might recognise a certain Eurovision 2017 champion featured in it.

A music video you can watch now, though, is the one for “Better Now”. MARO provides featured vocals for the song produced by American electronic duo ODESZA. After the audio was first released at the start of March, the music video dropped earlier this week.

ELENA feat. Theo Rose – “Lumina”

“Lumina” (“Light”) lets flowers bloom, and it also allows ELENA and Theo Rose to bloom in the music video for their new single. Eurovision 2009 singer ELENA has brought Theo Rose on board for the Romanian folk-pop song, which features an accordion interlude. The pair sing of the one person who shines brightly in their life: “You are my light when it is night / I feel close to your radius, lai lai lai la la la / I put your light in my soul / And with a song, I live through it”.

Laura Tesoro – “Not Easy”

Laura Tesoro is slowing things down for her new single “Not Easy”. It’s a piano ballad that grows in the final moments, giving Belgium’s Eurovision 2016 star an opportunity to share her emotions with fans. Laura sings to her lover and thanks them for being with her, even when she can be difficult to be around: “It’s not easy to love me / And all of the things I can’t change / You make it easy to love me / Cause you know that I’m not to blame”.

Francesco Gabbani – Volevamo solo essere felici

Francesco Gabbani’s new album, Volevamo solo essere felici (We just wanted to be happy), showcases the Italian singer’s charisma. Fans will know three of the songs already – “La Rete”, “Spazio Tempo” and title track “Volevamo Solo Essere Felici” – but there are seven new additions to discover. Many of them bring the Eurovision 2017 star’s fun personality to the forefront. However, there are some slower offerings as well to give the LP shape and dynamism.

Jeangu Macrooy – “Admit It”

Summer arrives early thanks to Jeangu Macrooy. The Netherlands’ Eurovision 2021 star brings us “Admit It”, which has a cool vibe and solid groove underlining it – perfect for when you’re chilling out in the sunshine. In the lyrics, Jeangu toots his own horn to try and woo a certain person: “All of the other boys, they don’t compare / No, they can’t turn you on / Not like I can / Admit it”

Benjamin Ingrosso & Omar Rudberg – “La Incondicional”

You’ve heard Benjamin Ingrosso sing in Swedish and English. Now hear him sing in Spanish. During the latest episode of Benjamin’s, the Eurovision 2018 star performed alongside Meldoifestivalen 2022 alum Omar Rudberg. The pair gave a rendition of “La Incondicional” (“The Unconditional”), first released by Mexican singer Luis Miguel in 1989

That’s not the only song released from this week’s episode. You can also listen to “When I First Saw You”, which Benjamin sang alongside Daniela Rathana.

Anouk – Trails of Fails

Following the pre-release single “Something Better”, Anouk has now released her new album in full. Trails of Fails is a melancholic LP, filled with seven slower paced and contemplative tracks. That’s not to say they’re all identical. The Eurovision 2013 singer brings in various elements to different songs, including soul and country.

Magdolna Rúzsa – “Papírsárkány”

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Magdolna Rúzsa’s “Papírsárkány” (“Kite”). Hungary’s Eurovision 2007 act shares a percussion-driven pop single with charm to it. Magdolna sings of the moment she first met her lover and the space this filled in her heart: “One Wednesday morning it happened / That you have rented my heart for a hundred years […] Now I can watch the big cloud chasing the kite / Life depends and nothing is left / Just how beautiful it is with you”.

Stella Mwangi – “Icon”

Stella Mwangi is an “Icon” and she’s making sure you know it through her new single. Norway’s Eurovision 2011 star serves attitude and confidence in this latest rap offering. Stella is ready to make her mark and demonstrate just what she’s capable of: “Young legend, I’m an icon / Y’all be sleeping on me / Better wake up / I’m about to show you what I’m made of”.

AISEL – “Alone With You”

Azerbaijan’s AISEL has released the new song “Alone With You”. The Eurovision 2018 star delivers a steady electronic dance track that also subtly includes some more traditional rhythms in the background. AISEL sings, “Thought I’m gonna beat my heart / Now I’m gonna miss you harder  / Just before I feel so tired / Let this moment last, I’ll fight it”.

Vasil – “Beautiful”

Vasil’s upcoming EP Porcelain Soldier is said to be “EDM friendly, inspired by Latin beats, and sprinkled with some Balkan flavours”. North Macedonia’s Eurovision 2021 representative has now released the first cut from this. “Beautiful” certainly has some of the electronic production hinted in the EP, though it feels disjointed in places with maybe too many influences. Lyrically, Vasil wants to make sure we realise that we are all beautiful: “Why do we let shadows fall / And them bruises build up walls? / Why don’t we let them have it all / Don’t we show them who we are?”.

PAENDA – “I Don’t Wanna Know”

“If you need that one song for a power strut, are fed up with ghosts from the past or just love my songs, this one’s for you.” PAENDA is ready to move on from her ex. The Austrian singer’s new song is all about forgetting those who no longer take up space in your life: “We just can’t go back in time / When I was yours and you were mine / Before you left and I went on to something new / No, I don’t wanna know about you”. Musically, “I Don’t Wanna Know” has a different feel to it compared to PAENDA’s usual electropop style. Instead, the Eurovision 2019 alum utilises a few more guitars in the production.

Sarah McTernan – “Gotta Get Out”

Sarah McTernan seems to have found her forte as a singer of dance music. Ireland’s Eurovision 2019 star takes us to the dancefloor once again with “Gotta Get Out”. In the lyrics, Sarah is battling with her mind and breaking free from the part that’s holding her back: “I spent too many nights at home thinking / That I know there’s just something I’m missing / Leaving my head for my heart, now I’m all in / Now I’m ready / Gotta get out of my head”.

Glen Vella – “Tagħna 2”

Glen Vella’s new song is “Tagħna 2” (“Our 2”). It’s an upbeat pop track and the chorus certainly has a lot of joy behind it. There’s a fair amount going on in the accompaniment at times, but it helps give it an energetic feel. In the lyrics, Malta’s Eurovision 2011 star says he and his lover were made to write a story for two: “Our story, Na-Na-Na, our Na-Na-Na-Na, our 2 / Happiness announces you every time / In my thoughts / The clouds become sunny”.

Olga Seryabkina – Синий Цвет Твоей Любви

Olga Seryabkina has dropped the new album Синий Цвет Твоей Любви (The Blue Colour of Your Love). There are ten songs on the LP, including the previous singles “Бывшие”, “Синий цвет твоей любви”, “HOLODNO”, “Преступление” and “это LOVE”. The remaining five new songs largely continue the house and electro-pop vibe. Though, for the final song, “1985”, Russia’s Eurovision 2007 star also brings in some disco influences to round off proceedings.

Petra Frey – “Königin der Nacht”

It’s been a while since we had some good, old fashioned schlager in these music roundups. But Petra Frey is here to provide. Austria’s Eurovision 1994 representative brings us “Königin der Nacht” (“Queen of the Night”). Petra sings the tale of a woman who is trapped in her boring everyday life and decides to shake things up: “Finally out in life / Because everything starts now, she feels a tailwind / Towards the sun […] Now, here and now, she is queen of the night”.

Kenan Doğulu – “Sonsuza Dek – Forevermore”

Won’t somebody please think of the children?! Fear not, Kenan Doğulu is thinking of the new generation and has released the single “Sonsuza Dek – Forevermore” specifically for Turkey’s National Sovereignty and Children’s Day, which is celebrated on 23 April. The Eurovision 2007 star is joined by a children’s choir for parts of the song, which is sung in both Turkish and English: “We are the kids / We are the sun and moonlight / We’ll shine again forevermore”.

Måneskin – “We Gonna Dance On Gasoline”

While not an officially released single, Måneskin have shared the new song “We Gonna Dance On Gasoline” on social media. The Eurovision 2021 champions have used it as a call for people to support Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing the ongoing war. The band note on Instagram:

“Refugees in Ukraine and around the world need urgent humanitarian aid. We’re using our voice to demand action, and you can, too. Join us, make your own video calling for the world to support refugees and donate on: ForUkraine.com. “

Sarah McTernan is criminally underrated. Sensational vocals and music. She was top of the iTunes Charts! I hope she gets the recognition she deserves, and I hope she comes back to Eurovision one day with a song that fully showcases her talent.

That ODESZA/MARO track is brilliant. Just want to drive on a nature road with my windows down and the radio blasting it.

Excellent collection this week! Love the songs by Lake Malawi, AISEL and Maro. Best one this week is the cute cooperation between Omar Rudberg and Benjamin Ingrosso.
