The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 40 competing songs in Eurovision 2022. Next we review the Netherlands, who have chosen S10 with “De Diepte”.

Have we fallen deeply in love with the song? Read on to find out!

S10 – “De Diepte” (Netherlands Eurovision 2022)

Review: S10 – “De Diepte”

Lucy: When we heard we were getting a song in Dutch this year, all of us were intrigued, especially given S10’s status as the alt-pop queen of the Netherlands. She has stuck with a genre she excels in, and amplified it to create a soaring song where it’s easy to understand what is happening lyrically, whether you are fluent, look the translation up, or neither. “De Diepte” is devastating, and soars with the “ooooh ahhh” hook. Something so simple provides such feeling and, well…depth! In my opinion, this is the best song this year, and S10 performs it incredibly. Could we get a Dutch win again already?

Score: 10

Renske: “De Diepte” is everything Dutch pop music should be in the 21st century. It has that English-like rhythm of the Dutch language and turns out to be a song that talks openly about mental health. The Netherlands is strongly targeting a younger audience, changing their aim quite strongly from earlier entries. There is story-telling, but it’s a story that is accessible. The Dutch have understood that streaming platforms are getting more influential in the Eurovision world and that S10’s song is rightly suitable for that.

Score: 8.5

Oliver: Clean guitar, clean vocal, clean production… but “De Diepte” is nothing more than that. Clean and pretty. S10 is a talented wordsmith, beautifully capturing her emotions as she laments in a pit of despair. But that poignancy is lost in the dull, repetitive “da da da da da da da da da, ooh, aah” moments. Where’s the climax? Where’s the punch to the gut moment? The Dutch entry is missing something major, and with so many other easy-listening entries in the mix, Team Netherlands needs to pull off some top tier staging if it wants to match the feats of The Common Linnets and Duncan Laurence.

Score: 4.5

Deban: The Netherlands is a class act. Composed as an ode to the songwriter’s sadness, the sentiment emoted here latches onto an undeniably infectious sonic beat. Quite often in life, nothing prepares you for a mental breakdown. Similarly, the vibe here is unexpected. I wasn’t expecting a song about mental awareness in Dutch to take flight. However in my head it does, and S10’s live performances have kept me glued.

Score: 8

Natalie: It’s great to hear some Dutch at Eurovision, and even better to hear some well-performed, well-produced modern Dutch pop music. Amidst a haunting production that creeps through the song, the chorus shines bright thanks to the thumping beats and S10’s sparkling voice. There are folk-country guitars, violins, and a piano ending, and through all of it, S10 is there, holding it all together perfectly. It gets better each time I listen to it. I’ll have this one on repeat a lot.

Score: 7.5

Netherlands Eurovision 2022 ranking

In the Eurovision 2022 Wiwi Jury, we have 18 jurors but only have room for five reviews. The remaining scores are below:

Angus: 7.5

Josh: 9

Luis: 9.5

Pablo: 8.5

Robyn: 8

Ron: 7.5

Sebastian: 9

Suzanne: 6.5

Tom: 8

William: 8.5

16. Netherlands – S10 – De Diepte – 7.5/10 – a quiet introspective entry which strongly conveys a relatable emotion. There are a little too many meaningless sounds in this song which at points take me out of the contemplative atmosphere though – I know they were probably worried about the accessibility of the Dutch language but there are only a certain amount of “da’s” and “ooh’s” and “aah’s” that I can listen to in 3 minutes. The country undertones that this song strays into at times are also not particularly my thing. However, I do love how this song… Read more »

It is not true – it happened toy jury friendly songs in Eurovision before like from Italy with Gualazzi, Malta, North Macedonia and Austria. It happened to Sweden once big time, when they started to give the points separately from the juries and televote and it stuck in peoples’s heads. But it is not true that Sweden is always favored the most by the juries.

The closer we get to the contest, the more I think this is the only real dark horse this year. It’s not trying to be anything else than what it is: classy, authentic, simple, pretty. Love the Dutch in it. This deserves a top 5 finish!

Ever since I saw this performed live at “Mathijs Gaat Door” (the performance with the red lasers) I knew our team had struck gold with this one. The “da da da” parts are so smart, and the “ooh ah” parts make the song memorable but also emotional. Lots of fans were skeptic about S10 singing in Dutch but I knew she would pull it of, as she has an amazing repertoire in Dutch. 10/10, so proud of my country this year! To think that (if she qualifies ofc) we’ll have only missed 1 final in the last 10 contests, which… Read more »

My 1st impression about it was already positive and “De Diepte” never stopped growing on me. It’s the kind of song that stays in your mind but you never feel the need to make it go. The ultra simple “tadadada” and “ooohhh aaahhh” work as catchy universal hooks and give it a surprising sing-along quality for something in Dutch. Plus the gentle guitar in the background is highly addictive. From vocals to lyrics, S10 carries that vulnerable but strong vibe that may work well. Arguably too chill for a frontrunner, but a possible dark horse. 9.5/10

I agree about the Netherlands being a dark horse. I think that this entry can very well finish much higher than people expect it to. And it’s highly possible that she might climb in the odds after her rehearsal on Saturday, which I am really looking forward to!

If the Dutch delegation nails the staging, I think they can do well. This is doing quite well on most fan polls I’ve seen and it’s not exactly the kind of song we normally see that high ranked. If young viewers had a strong effect on Maneskin success, I can see this one getting part of it support, both “De Diepte” and S10 sound very respectable for people that consume pop with indie and alternative flavors.

S10 just has a cool edge that makes this song stand out. We know she can perform live and I have very high expectations for her staging. Whilst the song isn’t exactly unique, it just has a fresh and youthful feel thanks to S10. One of my favourites this year!

I said before all jury reviews, that IF Netherlands scores very well in this year’s contest, then it must be mostly because of the televote and NOT because of the jury vote. And that’s a big ‘if’. To me the song lacks the refined quality that entries like ‘Calm After The Storm’, ‘Arcade’ ‘Space Man’, ‘Saudade, Saudade’ and ‘Hold Me Closer’ have. And with such songs its best to compare ‘De Diepte’ with. Yes, ‘Arcade’ had its own “Ooehoeee” climatic outburst, but ‘De Diepte’ has too much of them. And it aren’t even the Dutch parts in this song. You… Read more »

9.5/10 So excited to see Dutch in the competition again! De Diepte is so beautifully written and produced, the more acoustic guitar sections of the song flowing into the big da da da and ooh aah’s just gives me goosebumps every time! I feel like even if you don’t speak Dutch you can connect to this song! I’m a little worried about how this is going to be staged, but with good staging I think S10 will come top 10!!

“De Diepte” is a song that you can connect to so easily. I think singing this in Dutch creates a special vibe to the song ratger than English and making it another generic ballad. It will surely stand out and make an impression to both juries and the televoters. It will definitely make the top 10 and with a good staging it can grab the trophy!!

Incredible, simply phenomenal and SO soul-crashing. It completely captures and portaits the feelings of sadness and agony. It’s so emotional, S10’s vocal skills are spectacural when live too, you can literally *feel* her thoughts and sympathize both through the lyrics and the beautiful music orchestration. Everything is perfect here, the guitar chords, the pre-chorus (yes, the “da da da da da” part is one of my favorites in the song) I cannot even find enough words to describe this gem, it completely affects you and just feels so relatable at times. “De diepte” has to be the fastest grower for me this season. At first listen, I was like “Oh, ok, this is a solid song but I’m not caught yet”. The second listen was the turning point for me as whole meaning of the song opened before my eyes. It may look simple, but I find that’s where it success lays. Everything from the voice to the guitar chords and the drums/beat is produced with so much care and wise. Nothing is left and nothing remains. This kind of dark nostalgic ballads are usually better when carried by delicate raw… Read more »

Is Oliver going to give anyone above 5 points and why is he such a hater? This is objectively one of the best songs this year, and even if it sounds repetitive and with lack of climax, ot deserves much higher score than 4.5, which actually proved by the rest of the jury.

Why are commenters being personally critical of the jury members this year?

  1. The Wiwi Jury is not a professional jury. The task is only a bit of fun.
  2. The people who write are actual people who I assume most commenters haven’t actually met. They do not need to be singled out personally, because you don’t know them.
  3. A little respect should not be too much to ask. Please start doing it. Thank you.

“De Diepte” is a remarkable song, because everything on the page would suggest that it should be unremarkable. All of the elements that I personally dislike in a song are there on paper, yet the end result is a beautiful recording. I hugely admire the efforts that the artist and the studio have put into this one. Reviewig this song in detail would not be right, because I admire the track so much.

This song is a bit of a grower, at first listen the dadadas and oohoos seem a little too much, but afterwards you can’t get them out of your head. I think it’s an advantage for S10 that she gets two performances at Eurovision (hopefully) so people can get used to the song a little. I don’t know if it’s a really competitive song, you already see this in the Eurojury results where she’s performing pretty poorly, but it’s one of those songs that still have a life after Eurovision. I really like Netherlands this year! This song is so moving, S10’s voice is so unique and the dutch language is getting the whole song even more special. I would be happy if Netherlands win, but I don’t think so, because of the other ballads. My other worry is that I really live Greece’s song too, but I don’t think these two songs are going to be on top equally, either Amanda’s or S10’s song is going to flop I fear.

Neither is going to flop, I think. Both are a top 10 material, and they are quite different. The Dutch entry is more atmospheric throughout, while the Greek one builds up to an explosive chorus. Both have their place to shine. And even if one of them slightly underperforms on what is projected (say finishing 12th or so), I still wouldn’t call it a flop, as it’s a good spot in its own right, and many countries not projected to qualify would see it as a big win. As for that, both Netherlands and Greece are surefire qualifiers and left… Read more »

NETHERLANDS – Their delegation took a risk and sent a song in their native language after a long time. It was the right choice, as this gorgeous entry really removes any doubts that the Dutch language can feel as stunning and as poetic as any other. S10 feels 100% authentic in delivering ”the depths” of her soul. You can feel all the beauty and all the danger of hopelessly falling for someone, and wanting to hold on to that moment. The fear of being left alone, as well as the high of being loved. The instrumental may seem subtle at… Read more »

I agree. Lenny Kuhr in 1969 has a beautiful song in Dutch, and so did Edsilia Rombley in 1998. It’s been awhile, though, and the Dutch (reportedly) didn’t want their language to be used after the bad flop of 2012. However, that song was bad because it was bad, not because it was in Dutch. Now we are back to the good music in the language yet again.

Stunning entry from the Netherlands. If you take away their song last year (a lot of countries had issues with the songs that the returning artists produced), they are in a stunning run of Eurovision form, which just doesn’t look like letting up.This definitely deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as “Arcade” and “Grow” for me. I’ve already come to terms with it. Sweden is in my bottom 5 this year and people eat her song up more than a starving crowd at an all-you-can-eat buffet. The song is so hilariously fabricated and transparent, yet everyone is gullible enough to believe it. I can write a song about how I was molested as a child yet it never happened. I can fake a raspy voice and people will flock to that song like it’s the most ‘avant-garde’ melody in existence? Sorry but no. Such a charming song, and it’s in Dutch. I think Netherlands will do well this year. It’s one of those songs that don’t need gimmicks and pyro, atmosphere alone should be enough to send this up the scoreboard.

I’ve really enjoyed this song over the past month and a half, but it somehow eludes me much of the time unless if it REALLY appears before me. When I listen to it, I do enjoy it much, but I’m not sure how well S10 will cope with a huge audience watching her go ‘ooh, aah’ most of the chorus. I like the context, but I have other songs I love more. For me it’s a 7.5/10, which is still a good score! I like it, just don’t love it. (I’m Dutch myself FYI)
