Marius Bear Boys Do Cry Eurovision 2022 First Rehearsal
EBU / Nathan Reinds

Switzerland’s Marius Bear was next up to hit the stage today for Eurovision 2022 first rehearsals. The Appenzell native performed “Boys Do Cry” in Italy for the first time inside Turin’s PalaOlimpico. Did Marius deliver? Let’s find out…

Switzerland’s Marius Bear “Boys Do Cry” — Eurovision 2022 first rehearsal

@eurovision What a voice! 🥰 Switzerland’s @marius.bear takes the stage for his first rehearsal 🇨🇭 #Eurovision2022 #Eurovision #EurovisionTikTok ♬ original sound – Eurovision

As expected, the Swiss presentation is very laid back. Marius Bear stands centre stage, dressed in all black with a leather look jacket and his signature earring. Our boy is surrounded by smoke, spotlights, and the occasional burst of purple and blue lighting (which looks like a running theme this year). It’s reminiscent of “Amen” by Vincent Bueno from Austria — who failed to qualify for the Eurovision 2021 grand final — but with a softer, gentler edge. The question remains as to whether Marius will be able to stand out from his competitors, especially following another stripped back — but stellar — performance from Lithuania.

Our wiwibloggers said…

Suzanne: I love the authenticity and the heart that we get from Marius Bear. He’s just like a big teddy bear and I wanna give him a big hug. Embrace the masculine, embrace the feminine. It’s okay, boys do cry.

Jonathan: Darkness very much seems to be the theme this year but when there’s so little going on the focus really is gonna be on Marius Bear. From the clip, I’m not quite getting all the emotions just yet. Hopefully once we see some camera angles we’ll start feeling things.

I’m getting the impression that Switzerland could qualify after all. I’ve always liked the song, but I’ve been feeling pretty lonely with this opinion. I just really hope that at the semi final, he really will capture the audience’s attention in an emotional way.

Sometimes reading these so called “slay queen”eurofans’ comments it’s so funny because of how they don’t seem to be able to distinguish between their own opinions and the objective facts based upon research, precedence and logic. Switzerland might not be your favorite, however objectively speaking it’s absolute quality and will score at least a top five jury vote in the semi, it could even win the jury vote. It’ll likely score well with the casual viewer too, like salvador and voila. If you can only appreciate uptempo songs then that’s okay however you have to be able to understand things… Read more »

Impossible le to know now if it will qualify. Sometimes there are surprises with great singers that go through even if the song is meh, sometimes it doesn’t work. I’ll wait to see it live but for now I’m not confident about Swiss qualification.

There is absolutely nothing objective about Switzerland getting at least top 5 with the juries. Please get off your high horse. You’re being just as biased as the ‘slay queen eurofans’ in the other direction.

Really torn on this one. If the camera angles are perfect this could be a great moment on stage, otherwise this’ll be way too boring to make it. Performing after such a similar performance from Lithuania also won’t help this at all. He sounds great tho (from the 5 seconds we heard it live).

I wouldn’t call Lithuania and Switzerland similar

Song-wise they aren’t, but pure performance wise they’re quite similar. Both feature the artists standing solo centre-stage, without too much choreo or anything. They both would have benefitted from being around “bigger performances” like Albania or Latvia.

I think this COULD barely qualify

The Vincent Bueno of the year, people think this is qualifying just because it’s Switzerland

I really dont understand who decided this running order knowing we would have 2 single performers mostly static on dark stage with just pinkish/purplish colors going back to back

Things change during rehearsals. You can’t plan these things. Lithuania changed the performance last minute because the spinning sun was supposed to be a massive part it. So the lighting may had to be changed too. I was reading an interview with Lithuania’s stage director where he calls RAI’s camera work “utter trash” lol

Oh, what a sight would’ve been. To Have that Sun stage moving while Monika performed, But when things go wrong, you have to pivot and adapt. Hopefully, this doesn’t hurt her too much.

Still hoping they will fix it

I don’t think it will get fixed in time. They’re planning to limit the movement so a lot of delegations might have to change things on the fly to make their stagings work. Lithuania just can’t seem to take a break this year. First they have an early running order slot and now they can’t really use all their original staging plans and have to do something else in a hurry (probably because of the malfunctioning sun). I hope Lithuania can pull it off by the live show, but it might be finished before it has even started.

Frankly all Lithuania needs is Monika in a sparkling dress delivering her song to the camera. Monika is the biggest selling point, and anything else is a distraction. The breaking down of the giant structure might have been the best thing that could have happened to them, honestly. 😀
