On Saturday Albania’s Ronela Hajati was the first artist of Eurovision 2022 to rehearse inside PalaOlimpico.

Given that she’s opening the show, it makes sense that photos from her rehearsal were the first to go up on Saturday afternoon. They quickly became the talk of Twitter and Instagram, specifically the main photo (published at the top of this post), which showed Ronela and her four shirtless dancers with their hands moving toward their nether-regions.

However, by Sunday afternoon the gallery of Ronela had disappeared from the official Eurovision Instagram account. It was subsequently re-uploaded, but without the photo above.

No explanation has been given and Albania was the only country from Day 1 of rehearsals to have their gallery deleted and re-uploaded (and not on the sly).

Sadly, Ronela’s female dancer — who is crucial to theme of the “Sekret” stage show — is not featured in the gallery.

A post shared by Eurovision Song Contest (@eurovision)

It is safe to assume that Ronela is not happy about it — and whatever else is going on behind the scenes with production.

After word got out about the photo swap, she posted a tweet filled with only “flood of tears” emojis.

Commenters have questioned why a post with 25,000 likes — far more than the other galleries — was deleted.

Still others have suggested this is an act of censorship. A user named @josh.drummond wrote: “they took out the more ‘provocative’ photos…what a joke right.”

That would be particularly alarming given that the European Broadcasting Union champions freedom of expression and artistic freedom, even within the confines of a “family show”.

Plans for the stage show and live-on-tape recordings were submitted weeks if not months ago, so producers would have known the tone of the visuals and choreography. So Ronela’s moves shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

Luixhino Hala, one of Albania’s most sought-after dancers, posted a message of support for Ronela on Instagram Stories.

“These two photos are deleted?!” he wrote. “Why? Ronela Hajati and Klaudia Pepa — Go on girls with your journey!”

As a Spaniard I have to say that I am fed up with the censorship of women. Why don’t they censor men? What’s wrong with two women who love each other? Didn’t we gays have the freedom to express ourselves in ESC by singing and acting? Europe has a very big problem with machismo.

I havent seen the photo with the other girl in yet… There doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it… So i dont get that one. I can understand the reactions to the stylistic choice of brah that Ronela wore, but not regarding anything else. This could of course be a reaction from Chinese owners of TikTok, and if it is so then EBU should cancel the TiKToK collaboration right away.

Then why didn’t EBU respond to the fans concerns about it? William’s question has thousands of likes in Ronela’s reuploaded pictures, and yet no answer from them.
Instagram’s algorithm is based on machine learning and unless there is actual nudity, like genitals showing, they won’t flag something as inappropriate.

While it is currently unclear whether EBU has issues with Albania’s staging being ”too sexy” or that it might have homoerotic charges, in either case their censorship would send a wrong message to the viewers. If it’s the former, what about Spain and San Marino? Are we now expecting people who have erotic songs to perform them visually modest? (I mean, to be fair, it *was happening* in the 90s. Try to read the lyrics of Portugal 1992, Austria 1997, or Norway 1998, for instance. However, from a today’s standpoint, it’s funny in a dated way.) If it’s the former,… Read more »

måneskin won performing half naked last year, chanel’s performance has more sexual moves not to mention the song is as sexual as you can get, and achille will likely be doing sexually suggestive things on stage too… these rehearsals are an absolute trainwreck, so many issues that should have been sorted out weeks ago are coming up now and it is so unfair to the artists competing. especially ronela and other delegations that will have to completely change their performances that theyve worked for months on

First, they made a partnership with Tiktok and stoped the “traditional” way of broadcasting the rehearsals on youtube?! Certain people listen to foreign music and don’t particularly care to search for translations (example kpop and latin pop) (many ofc do but they are not the focus)

Ebu has to ban problematic words, it’s the rules, but many won’t even notice it.
