Finnish rock legends The Rasmus are first to take to the PalaOlimpico stage today. They’re bringing their unique brand of edgy punk music to the Eurovision stage, along with their signature bright yellow outfits first introduce at UMK 2022.

Our own Deban Aderemi is a big fan of “Jezebel”. In his Wiwi Jury review, Deban wrote: “The Rasmus are tried, tested and know what they’re doing. With sales in excess of five million records and a solid catalogue of nine hit albums, having them in the Eurovision landscape is a blessing. Their song “Jezebel” salutes the original biblical troublemaker. She’s a fierce rebel that’s set to take the continent by storm. With infectious hooks, a rock edge and the noughties nostalgia, this is destined to be one of 2022’s most memorable entries.”

🇮🇱 Israel: Michael Ben David “I.M”

He’s stunning, and he knows it. After months of speculation surrounding his participation, Israel’s Michael Ben David has arrived in Torino for his first rehearsal of “I.M”. He’s wearing a sculpted white suit, and he’s joined on stage by four backing dancers — very similar to the revamped music video.

Penned for Michael Ben David, “I.M” on the face of it seems like a self-affirming power-pop song. The inspiration for the song, however, is driven from Ben David’s struggles in youth, having suffered being bullied for his high-pitched voice – which has ultimately become his trademark sound when singing.

🇷🇸 Serbia: Konstrakta “In corpore sano”

The question on everybody’s lips… What’s the secret behind Meghan Markle’s healthy hair? Serbia’s Konstrakta has arrived in Turin to deliver a message about celebrity beauty standards. In her first rehearsal of “In corpore sano”, she’s brought her favourite washcloth and basin, along with five backing vocalists from the Serbian national final.

Wiwiblogger Luis is a huge fan of Konstrakta. In his Wiwi Jury review, he wrote: “Right when you thought Serbia was running out of ideas after exploring a wide variety of ballads and ethno-bops, they come with something completely out of the box. There are so many things to unpack in “In Corpore Sano” that you keep on noticing new stuff every time you watch Konstrakta perform. This artist is not only healthy, but has a mind that’s out of this universe. This is just too good to be true.”

🇦🇿 Azerbaijan: Nadir Rustamli “Fade to Black”

Dark, mysterious and brooding, Azerbaijan’s Nadir Rustamli takes to the stage for his first rehearsal of “Fade to Black”. He’s joined by an interpretive dancer and two gigantic staircases, akin to high school gym bleachers.

In a recent chat with wiwibloggs, Nadir said: “We received 302 songs, and [of the shortlist] I connected immediately with ‘Fade To Black’. I know that you think that I am only 22 years of age, but when I sing this song, it fits with my personal story — and I hope that the Eurovision community connect with the meaning behind the song and my performance.”

🇬🇪 Georgia: Circus Mircus “Lock Me In”

Circus Mircus definitely brought the entire circus to town with this one. The lead singer resembles Willy Wonka from the chocolate factory with his massive black glasses, brown hat and red velvet suit. The LED screen features some of the coolest graphics we’ve seen this year: psychedelic lips, funky stripes, and even large, funky eyes. Paired with the waterfall, which is illuminated pink, it sort of looks like a pretty lady. This may be a clever play on the emotional eyes that Georgia’s Nina Sublatti served back in 2015 in Vienna.

When speaking with our correspondent Katie Wilson, in a somewhat surreal interview from bed in Madrid, one member was hinting that the song actually doesn’t particularly have a meaning per se, and that its nature is purely spontaneous. The joy of the song is the complete randomness of it all.

However, when looking at the lyrics, it’s hard not to notice a theme of reaching for your ambitions. Lines like “step it up now, get it done now”, “shoot it to the stars, to the top now” and “make it, do it, break it” indicate they will keep pushing for their personal wins until they get there, even if they “break” something along the way.

The spacecraft mentioned throughout the bridge could be the metaphorical goal, and that’s why they’re asking to be taken there, with the aim of reaching the sky and beyond. There’s plenty of pep-talk style lyrics throughout to get you going on a Monday morning.

The line “lock me up, lock me down, lock me in, lock me out, lock me sideways” maybe goes with the more illusive definition behind the song. And hey, who knows, maybe the lyrics really don’t have a specific meaning to them, and Circus Mircus just wanted to make something really, really fun (which they’ve most certainly completed with ease).

Regardless of the meaning or non-meaning, the lines can quickly get stuck in the listener’s head and give them a perk to their day. “CIRCUS! MIRCUS!”

🇲🇹 Malta: Emma Muscat “I Am What I Am”

A post shared by wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs)

She is what she is — and now Emma Muscat is a potential qualifier. She has really elevated her song with top-notch choreography that makes it feel more modern and current. This continues with the golden staging and costumes. Emma absolutely stuns with a deconstructed disco ball look. The ball may be broken, but she is definitely coming together as she glides from the piano, where she is always comfortable, to Stage B, where she dances with four other people in a V-shape. It really pops!

Speaking to our William in Amsterdam, she said that her song is all about encouraging self-love.

“The song does talk about self-love and I feel it’s something that lacks in the world. I know that I personally struggled with accepting myself when I was growing up and being accepted by others.”

“People tend to judge a book by it’s cover and say like, you know, ‘It can’t be that this person struggled with self-acceptance and self love.’ But I think that everyone has their story. As soon as I heard this song I felt it was so personal to me and I felt it could help others too. That’s the main reason I wanted to bring this song on such a big platform with so many millions of people watching.”

🇸🇲 San Marino: Achille Lauro “Stripper”

A post shared by wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs)

Well this stripper sure knows how to ride! Achille Lauro rocked up to his staging, bulge first, wearing a black bikini brief, a sheer body suit and a furry black boa with to big balls. He then mounted a pink bull, grabbing its horn and not looking back. Blurring all notions of sexuality and gender, he rides for absolutely all of us and we are ready to hold on to him for every minute. This looks expensive. There are massive cages for the drummers and fire streaks shooting into the air. It adds heat to an already hot performance.

This is what Achille Lauro has said about “Stripper”: “I would define it as a punk-rock song, even though I prefer not to give a label to the things I do. It’s a track based on the duality of man and woman, I would call it a feminist anthem. It’s about feeling like a woman and not worrying about outside judgment.”

🇦🇺 Australia: Sheldon Riley “Not The Same”

A post shared by wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs)

Sheldon Riley won’t need to do squats in Turin — his 40kg outfit looks like a workout in itself! He brought the eleganza with a dramatic all-white outfit with silver embellishments. A long, furry train adds visual intrigue and a royal feeling fit for a king (or queen). His bejewelled mask looks stunning as stunning as it did in Australia. Changing his outfit from the black of the national selection to the white one on show here was a good idea. It adds some much-needed colour to the stage show.

At times we see a rugged landscape behind him along with a cloudy, mystical sky. He climbs a set of large white stairs and the lights go all white and purple and then white and blue. Plenty of smoke fills the stage and ads mystery when beams of light cut across it. The dead kinetic sun remains in place — at times it has white arches of light, creating a monochrome rainbow.

🇨🇾 Cyprus: Andromache “Ela”

A post shared by wiwibloggs (@wiwibloggs)

Birth of Venus. Birth of Andromache! Nodding to Botticelli but serving 100% Greek goddess, Andromache wowed us with her stage prop — a modern take on Lucy Jones’ glass shard from Kyiv. This seashell is the perfect backdrop for beautiful light projections, which come in a variety of patterns and colours, including yellow and blue. It seems like the non-moveable kinetic sun — aka the black hole or black rainbow behind all the acts — won’t interfere with Cyprus’ flow.

Cyprus’ song is not among my favourites, but I must admit that the staging looks great. It is incredible how important this is at ESC, I forgot each year hahaha. Seriously, Cyprus and San Marino will go up some positions just because of the staging + performer charisma. And still some people say it is just a SONG contest…

You see for me with semi 1 ( as with the past 2 yrs) all the songs tend to blend together for me. Nothing stands out and grabs me. Now semi 2 always seems to have a diverse group of acts that stand out and get me excited. Nothing blends there. I tend to think semi 2 is the better stronger show than semi 1 because of this. Just a personal thing though. At the end of the day, whether you think one semi is stronger than the other in terms of songs is largely based on personal taste and… Read more »

Emma has powerful vocals though, do think she has qualifying chances, juries could rank this high and cheesy entries when staged right like this have its audience (not for everyone ok) but also good on her for also at least trying her best to appeal more towards the public with more of a show act with some dancers

Sooo Australia, he sounds great on sound check. Hasn’t been one of my favourites this year, but will probably qualifying without to much hassle. I hope he doesn’t do the mask removal and crying again though. Something about the whole performance and song I find disingenuous.

Cyprus have gone for a very different feel than what I expected, and it looks great! You can see the prop and lighting really work well with the cascades from the stage. She also looks beautiful. Having bought their own stage background will be a huge benefit this year.

Sure, but that’s meant to be the reasoning behind having separate voting between juries and televoters. Theoretically, juries shouldn’t be rewarding weak songs or vocal performances (theoretically, mind you). But viewers at home tend to love a spectacle and it makes perfect sense for delegations to lean into whatever is their strength.

San Marino has always been a contender to qualify, not sure why people were ruling them out. Achille has BUDGET

Well a song on it’s own is not pretty strong, maybe that’s why, but with this performance, it really is a strong contender to qualify

The song’s great, the staging looks great, Achille is a proven live performer. We already knew the budget of UVpSM wasn’t going to show the full extent of what he can do, but with his resources and the Eurovision stage at his disposal, it bodes well for him. I think San Marino has a very good shot at the final.

Seems to me that the acts with staging concepts not dependent on that sun, particularly with their own props/set, are standing out the most. Just first impressions from photos since vocals, delivery, camera angles, stage presence, and storytelling will be the real difference maker.
