Netherlands S10 De Diepte Eurovision 2022 First Rehearsal.jpg
EBU / Nathan Reinds

Eurovision 2022 second rehearsals continue in Turin, where we’re getting our first real look at how this year’s acts staged their performances. The penultimate act to rehearse today was Netherlands’ S10, performing “De diepte” ahead of next week’s semi-finals. What did we think of her stage show? Read on to find out…

Netherlands’ S10 “De diepte” — Eurovision 2022 second rehearsal

Padraig: For her second rehearsal in Turin, the S10 evokes memories of both Belgium’s Blanche and Sweden’s Sanna Nielsen from Eurovision 2017 and 2014 respectively. Just like both of the aforementioned women, S10 stands alone centre stage and lets her voice and the spotlights do all the work. Whilst simple, it’s an impactful approach with proven success in the past. And this time around is sure to be no different. The Dutch singers is one of the few acts today to be apparently unaffected by the broken stage backing. She uses the section of functioning LED beneath the “rainbow” to create a sort of sunset effect, while she herself is shrouded in darkness. The silhouette is impressive and creates quite a moment. Following on from Ukraine and Bulgaria this is a palette cleanser that Europe is sure to appreciate.

Too much artificial reverb like in the studio version. Why ?

Beautiful song. Love it. You know I cant speak Dutch, but when you don’t understand the lyrics, your whole focus is on the melody and the vocals. .

I totally agree! You’ve literally just described my entire approach to music.

Something’s missing here and it’s such a shame bc I thought a staging similar to the one made for her Matthijs Gaat Door performance would’ve been perfect

Let it go, the performance stays very powerful.

I think this staging killed the magic of the song. Even one of their live acoustic performances was so aesthetically pleasing and lived up to the mood of the song, idk what was the idea behind this staging but something is missing for me

It seems they did a better job back in the Netherlands with lasers.

Yes, that was so good. I honestly thought that was going to be re-created for Eurovision.

I don’t know if it would be technically possible to replicate it on the Eurovision stage, but it would be awesome. That performance was beautiful.

Clearly something is missing here. The Netherlands was my favorite (by far) song before the rehearsals, now I’m starting to doubt. S10 is still a great singer but she doesnt convey as much emotion as during their national thingy. Again that dark sun, black hole, whatever wretched sh**hole is damaging the staging SO much. The wide angles do more bad than good. They should have brought the tense red lasers from the national performance, had her singing on the remote stage with narrow angles and there you have the electric and dark atmosphere that the song needs. Im afraid she… Read more »

Do not panic! It is still the best song and the staging is good. Just believe all the eurovision websites and blogs who were there and say that it’s classy, powerful and captivating. I believe them more than a short clip.

This is looking less mystical and subtle than I’d imagined…it’s a bit too “on the nose”…they need to dig deeper, create more shadows, shafts of light..that the song lyric demands.

I like the song, but S10 looks like one of my classmates, who gives me weird/arrogant vibes.

Per tweet from Patrick Flynn (pro better): “Just a note on the 30 second Netherlands clip: there are some camera shots which need work but the full 3 minute version looks much better than that clip”

this feels like the delegation got nervous of squeezing by with a win and pulled back from this performance to ensure they were not hosting next year

I think this one will look good in the end! The song is great, it just needs a bit more of work light-wise but, I am confident we will see her in the final 🙂

I mean that’s really so much subjective opinion. She basically just stands without any special effect on stage or anything and viewers can’t really know what the song is about + The song does not really have some super hard notes to be hit. She might qualify, but I don’t think she will be in TOP 3.

Love the song, she sounds great and she looks great up there. However, was expecting a bit more of a punch from the staging. The live performance she did before Eurovision was better than how this looks. Maybe, this was just a dull part of the performance and the best stuff is being saved?

Well, to answer that question: Yes, it is. Per this tweet from someone who’s a pro better: https://twitter.com/patrickjfl/status/1521872786490339330?s=20&t=56-9AxbRYKBLukGiI-IIUw

I found the vocals a little underwhelming. Nothing against S10 and the song is still good, it just wasn’t as impactful as I was hoping it might be.

No this is much better. Let’s wait and see. I’ll bet the staging is beautiful, classy and effective. The songs stands out. S10 sings very good. And the camerashots and angles will be much better than in this clip. The black beginning is stunning.
No way this will be Sennek and won’t qualify. S10 will not end up in top 5 (final), I think, but she will definitely qualify.

I’m going to be honest, the background LED screen could use some light visuals because, apart from the incredible spotlights, the stage feels a tad hollow. And I don’t really like the white LED screen under the black hole either…

I think the staging and camera angels lack something. She songs really well and has a beautiful outfit. But i don’t get any feeling for the song here. I am disappointed.

Strong energy from De Diepte!! It connects with many peoples in a time with lots of uncertainies and danger. She shines and delivers like a diamond. Well Done Stien. Sending big Love xx Queen S10

One of my favourites post rehearsal, yet I find it slipping in my ranking since seeing a lack luster second rehearsal clip.
Black clothing against a mainly black backdrop. She fades away. This song needs to shine but this staging does nothing to elevate the song.

Not sure about the lighting choice. The colder tones suit this song better.

I’m expected more, maybe a darker staging. I love this song so much, and every time when I heard it live the performances were so clever looking, but now it looks bland for me,

The beginning is dark and mysterious. The part in the video is at the end of the song where things are brighten up. Seems to be a very classy staging. It looks and sounds very good!
