Eurovision 2022 second rehearsals for Wednesday concluded with Portugal’s Maro. The Festival da Canção winner was originally due to rehearse “Saudade, Saudade” earlier in the afternoon, but the run through was delayed due to a COVID-19 case in the delegation. What did we think? Scroll down to find out…

Portugal’s Maro “Saudade, Saudade” — Eurovision 2022 second rehearsal

Padraig: It’s been a long day of rehearsals, so it’s fitting that Maro’s gentle lullaby brings proceedings to a close, even if that’s not how organisers initially intended things to go. And I mean lullaby in the best way possible. This isn’t a sleepy, dull number but rather a musical hug that embraces you with the warmth of a cosy blanket. Like in Portugal’s national final, the staging is minimalistic. Maro and her singers stand in a circle, facing inwards, singing to each other. The camera is mostly focused in on them, neatly avoiding the rainbow shaped elephant in the room. However, a few wide-angle shots do suggest that the Portuguse may have had something extra planned for the LED.

A coffin would have been great as part of the act. Maybe they were concerned that the song would actually be viewed as really “dead” boring.

Thanks. At least someone got it unlike the majority who seem to get so butt hurt and so childishly touchy

So funny how people declare Portugal “the dark horse” every single year and they end up not even getting to the final or getting like 3 points from the televote. Just stop, it’s not a dark horse it’s a typical entry from them that will struggle to get a decent result, as usual.

Except for the year they actually won, in case you forgot, or last year when they came 12th and 7th in the jury vote… When have your country won lately or even qualified?

It’s a bit too dark for me. This is a beautiful song, it needs to shine bright.

The backing vocalist with COVID will be able to perform on semi-final day?

This song keeps growing and growing on me and it certainly has a very nice and atmospheric staging.

It looks and sounds GORGEOUS. This absolutely MUST qualify. Would be disgraceful if it didn’t.

Will almost stop following the season entirely next year if Portugal somehow failed to qualify, I would probably only tune in for the live shows in May and that would be enough for me, why is MARO being a possible NQ even a discussion?

Personally I find this song utterly boring and derived of charm. My last place song but, of course, that’s a personal opinion and I wish Portugal and all the contestants well in this exciting chapter for them.

My favorite “simple staging” rehearsal so far. If you’re going minimalistic, the performers and vocals need to be strong enough to carry it. Gorgeous to listen to. The camera shots need tweaking, but this should do well.

I love the song and I’m glad that they keep it simple. But I guess the lighting might be better, too dark around the backing singers.

It’s only boring for people who are easily bored.

REALLY good staging. Probably my favourite of the season. My personal winner! Please vote for her!

It already looks (and obviously sounds) amazing. But I guess the full potential of this staging will be reached in the live shows, with the audience surrounding the singers. Goosebumping already! <3

Isn’t that how it always is? And Portugal doing isolated staging has worked out pretty well in the past. That was a big element of why Salvador’s performance was so affecting.

Saudade, Saudade is just beautiful and sublime and the simplistic staging fits the song like a glove. I wish all the best to Portugal and I wish the member that got covid a speedy recovery 🙂

My best wishes go to the Portuguese delegation; I hope they are okay for the Semi Final.
“Saudade” was such a lovely way to finish the day today. Bravo to Maro and the group.

I hope that delegation member gets better. I wonder how long it takes to create a rehearsal clip because Portugal is the only one not up on the Eurovision Youtube channel yet.

Im surprised they didn’t plug in one of the Italian women from the stand-in rehearsals in case more of them get sick and this becomes the default performance that gets shown

If one of the backing vocalists is positive than this will be for sure the performance shown in the semi-final. What a pity.
