Stefan Hope Estonia Eurovision 2022 rehearsal
Photo: EBU / ANDRES PUTTING

We’ve reached the midpoint on day three of Eurovision 2022 second rehearsals. But before heading to lunch, we had Estonia’s Stefan take to the stage for his second rehearsal. How is “Hope” coming along? Let’s find out…

Estonia’s Stefan “Hope” — Eurovision 2022 second rehearsal

Padraig: Stefan has had a costume change for his second round of run-throughs. The black jacket, shirt and jeans have been swapped for white and beige. This is potentially to offer more contrast against the dead kinetic sun that looms menacingly over his entire performance. Stefan begins on the satellite stage with a sepia filter that harks back to the cowboy films of old. He strums his guitar as the filter fades away, before putting the instrument on his back as he makes his way to the main stage. It’s clear that the delegation envisions a lot of audience interaction, as much of Stefan’s time is spent singing to the arena while we are treated to multiple shots of currently empty seats. As we build towards the climax, Stefan runs back towards the satellite stage with a hop, skip and a jump. It ends with a return to the sepia before fading to black in the style of an old movie reel.

This aint qualifying.. the staging is so boring the forgettable.. many of the strong songs in this semi have gone too safe with their staging underrated songs or controversial songs might qualify instead like Israel and Ireland

Duncan Lawrence staging was also simple, yet personal.
It won.
If song is good, then simple staging won’t make a difference, unless its absolutely horrible and clashing with the song.

What happened to Estonia of 2009-2018? They used to be my favourite ESC country. Now they have lost their glamour, they only send basic boring songs with “hot” singers.

Hope is of course a little better than the years 2019-2021 but it can’t be compared to their previous era. He will be placed 10-12, probably a non qualifier with this increasing quality.

He should sing part of the song in Ukrainian / Armenian as this song is about freedom fighting, the battle of armenians against oppression and also dedicated to Ukraine.

all is nice, boy, clothing, positive message. But damn he suffers from this Italian rainbow. And why is he sweating so much? Give the boy a tissue please

Oh boy. I been mostly ignoring the drama of the black hole in the middle of the stage but this one is hard to avoid. I think it’s smart to lean in on the sepia like The Black Mamba did with the black and white filter. It places you quickly into the space when the LED can’t now in full since it’s now blocked. Props for him ditching the cowboys. He looks good on camera and he wouldn’t be the first first good looking chap from Estonia to qualify with an Avicci/Guetta-esque song.

Ah we would have had an amazing LED backdrop for this song had it not been for the sun malfunction. Nevertheless Stefan’s performance is amazing! I am sure he will qualify!

Stefan suffers more than most from the black asteroid of death blotting out his expansive western backdrop. I mean, come on, is there anyone in the world that thinks presenting something like that is acceptable? Oh well, Stefan does his thing with pride and gusto and he has just got to hope that no-one cares about what is behind him.

Looks and sounds amazing. Great sepia camera effect, absolutely perfect for the song. But yeah, that black half LP at the back of the stage is REALLY noticeable here.
Hope it doesn’t impact it because I seriously believe this song is going to get a huge amount of points.

It will. As much as I’m indifferent to the song he can really sing and is quite handsome, so he’ll qualify easy and deservedly.

It’s a nice song ( as much as we’ve heard many “Avichii” type songs but not commenting on that) his major issue is the pronunciation – for most of the song I cannot understand a word he is saying. Maybe it would have been smarter for him to sing in Estonian so at least he would be understood back home

And the award for the most ruined staging, thanks to the black hole, goes to…

Yeh it totally ruins the feel they were going for. Hate to go on about the stage, but when you see a clip like that, it reminds you just how bad that eye sore in the middle is.

It has a powerful message, and an extremely charismatic singer to deliver it. Most of the other big favorites in the semi – Poland, Sweden, Australia – have a strong somber side to them. This might be the *go to* uplifting entry of the semi! Of course, we also have Serbia and Finland, but what they offering comes much earlier, and in a completely different package.
