The Emerald Isle had a choice to make. Tonight, during a special broadcast of Ryan Tubridy’s The Late Late Show, six acts competed in Ireland Eurosong 2023 for the right to fly the Irish flag at Eurovision in Liverpool this May.

Wild Youth emerged victorious in the end with their song “We Are One” and will represented Ireland.

Amongst tonight’s competing entries were fan favourite CONNOLLY and former Sex Pistol John Lydon

Ireland Eurosong 2023 competing entries

Six artists will compete to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2023.

  • CONNOLLY – “Midnight Summer Night”
  • Adgy – “Too Good for Your Love”
  • Leila Jane – “Wild”
  • Wild Youth – “We Are One”
  • Public Image Ltd – “Hawaii”
  • K Muni & ND – “Down In The Rain”

A combination of votes from a national jury, an international jury, and a public televote determined the Eurosong winner.

One of the favourites to win tonight’s competition was CONNOLLY with “Midnight Summer Night”. In a wiwibloggs readers’ poll, the moody track picked up more than a third of all votes cast.

Also on the radar was John Lydon, formerly of the Sex Pistols, and his new band Public Image Ltd. The controversial rocker recently branded Eurovision as “absolutely awful” — an interesting way to gather support ahead of the national final.

Ah every year I hope that Ireland will pull something out of the bag and send something credible. Sadly, it’s another middle of the road song that I struggle to see getting past the SF. Something needs to change with Ireland’s selection process I think.

I am leaning towards it being more decent than not. Obviously their fame helped a bit but they also had really great staging that evolved the song. Yes there might have been better songs but they had weaker stagings..
It might not help Ireland get anywhere close to final but it is better than what they usually send.

Can people leave The song alone until may when rehersals start. The vocals and staging will be stronger, more likely to Qualify if it opens the show, we must use that to our advantage. its a clear opener to the semi, with the war and all that and the slogan it would fit well ig

People are being way too harsh just because they’re representing Ireland. They had one of the stronger songs in the selection, as did Connolly, but the public obviously thought they were better and voted for them to go. If Wild Youth won Melodifestivalen and represented Sweden with this song there wouldn’t be such negativity, would there?

The Irish acts were universally dreadful. The song that won is an obvious and clumsy attempt to be anthemic. The lead singer was so flat and out of tune in parts. Even if he improves on that (with the sneaky use of pre-recorded backing vocals as we saw with other acts in the last two years) it might scrape into the final but it will be bottom 2 or 3 at best. Ghastly

I totally forgot about this preselection, haha. I’m checking the results and the performances right now. What to say? Connolly: honestly, it didn’t sound like the song (demo?) we all knew to this point. All that screaming towards the end was unnecessary and ruined the mood of the song. It’s not a bad song but it does sound really generic. They look confident and the singer himself says that they come alive the bigger the stage; this setting in the Late Late Show is very small so I’ll try to stay optimistic for Liverpool. However, I do get the feeling that Ireland will struggle to stand out in its semi, with countries like Serbia, Norway and Portugal in their half.

As an Irish Eurovision fan, in my opinion the saddest aspect of Eurosong is RTÉ’s totally misjudged sense of self-belief that their approach to the Eurovision is the correct one, when in fact the opposite is the case as has been proven year after year – it always seems to be the fault of ‘them’ not ‘us’! Having watched the excellent Spanish semi-final the previous night, I can only say I am frankly embarrassed by ‘our’ pathetic efforts.

For large swathes of the Irish population ESC has never been cool, helped in no small part by RTÉ’s handling of it, when you have the likes of Tubridy (I don’t know of anyone who likes the man) and Marty Whelan are the public face of it. Every year we’re forced to re hash our former glories but our last win was a generation ago. I’m in no doubt that we have a wealth of musical talent in Ireland but many wouldn’t touch ESC. I admire Wild Youth as musicians and performers but at the end of the day it is a song contest. exactly proof that the talent is out there, interesting that the junior selection is handled by tg4 the tiny Irish speaking channel,if they can come up with something for junior eurovision, maybe the problem largely is RTE.

Another bad thing about these selection shows is these “expert panels” the UK used to do it as well. They all say the same generic comments full of praise for every song, what is the point of having them on if they cant be honest or be critical even in a constructive way.
If they are all going to be like sheep and follow each other more or less saying the same thing, best just to leave them out of it

I don’t understand how he came second from last. Make it make sense.

Everyone is way overly harsh to this song, the last chorus especially is quite anthemic and catchy. And there’s something really earnest here that I like. I could see it opening the show if I’m honest, it’s in the first half of the first semi, and with the branding of Liverpool 2023 and its message focus, this fits in nicely.

Clearly the band were trying to peddle this ‘androgynous vintage Harry Styles throwback fashion meets The Killer’s Brandon Flowers, Bruce Springsteen’ vibes, with that tired Coldplay anthemic quality to the song that we’ve heard a million times before. It’s all just a bit too tired and inoffensively generic, like something from 2016, similar to Joe and Jake’s ‘You’re Not Alone’ – which I actually preferred. Tbf this was the best of the bunch last night because it captured attention a lot more, but I genuinely can’t see it qualifying unless its up against some more underwhelming, forgettable songs. Maybe 11th… Read more »

Ok so i think you are wrong. For the first time listener ,not fandom, it will have an impact. If they open first semi this will defo sail through.

I hadn’t heard this song before, and I’m open to any kind of music. I fell asleep halfway through the first chorus. It’s just so boring and predictable. This will do nothing in the televote, I’m sorry.

Ireland don’t have the UK to push them through.

It is a pleasant and easy listening song but it is also generic and unremarkable. Ireland is in the first half of a competitive semi final with not even the UK able to vote for it. The omens are not good. RTÉ keep repeating the same old tired format in the tiny late late show studio and as long as they do, Ireland will continue to score in the bottom half of the the semi finals. RTÉ keep letting the country down. Such a shame for Ireland.

whether it is in the late late show or not wouldn’t change these results. The public and the jury voted for this. And let’s be real the others had shocking vocals

I agree that the studio wouldn’t change the results, my point was that RTÉ don’t take the contest seriously and hosting it in that studio is symptomatic of that careless approach.

Hello Jimmy its a combination of both firstly that late late selection show is just well embarassing at this stage, anyone who knows anything about eurovision or has seen even the smallest nations selection shows would agree with that. However if the selected song was any good at all it still has the opportunity to go the bigger eurovision stage and would do well there. Its a combination of awful national final production and poor quality songs. I would withdraw than throw good money after bad like this, even to take a year out and throw the saved participation fee at a… Read more »

I completely agree with what you’ve said Paul. I think that RTE don’t really want to win. The cost of hosting these days is so much more and on a completely different scale from when they last won in 1996. I’d rather that they pulled out than continue to embarrass the country with year after year of non qualification. The trouble is that there are a lot of hangers on in RTÉ who enjoy the annual trip to a nice European city which is one of the reasons that won’t withdraw.

When this goes to SF1 there will be no jury to save them. This is odds on favorite to become the first song in Eurovision history to score ZERO points in the semis…great job Ireland. Massive revamp ( a la Adgy or Wild Youth just save face and withdraw now).

That “achievement” of zero points in the semifinal has already been “accomplished” by Switzerland in 2004 and Czech Republic in 2009. There have been zero points scores in the semi since the jury televote split in 2016, but the countries you should have points in the other side.

@Renske, Wild Youth emerged victorious in the end with their song “We Are One” and will represented Ireland.
