Marco Mengoni Sanremo 2023

It was a night of musical treats and tantrums at il teatro. The 73rd annual Sanremo Music Festival is underway, and the quest for Italy’s Eurovision 2023 superstar has begun

On Tuesday 7 February, 14 of 28 artists performed during Sanremo 2023 night 1. Each artist presented an original song, accompanied by an orchestra, with their hopes to claim the biggest prize in Italian music.

Eurovision 2013 alum Marco Mengoni topped the first night scoreboard with his epic ballad “Due Vite”. Second place went to fan favourite Elodie.

All Sanremo acts will perform their tracks again throughout the course of the week. The festival champion will be offered first refusal on the opportunity to represent Italy at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool.

Italy’s Sanremo 2023 night 1 results

Fourteen acts performed their songs on Sanremo night 1.

Tonight’s results were determined by a combination of three voting methods — the public televote, the press jury, and the demoscopic jury, consisting of 300 music fans from across Italy.

  1. Marco Mengoni — “Due vite”
  2. Elodie — “Due”
  3. Coma_Cose — “L’addio”
  4. Ultimo — “Alba”
  5. Leo Gassmann — “Terzo cuore”
  6. Mara Sattei — “Duemilaminuti”
  7. Colla Zio — “Non mi va”
  8. I Cugini di Campagna — “Lettera 22”
  9. Mr. Rain — “Supereroi”
  10. Gianluca Grignani — “Quando ti manca il fiato”
  11. Ariete — “Mare di guai”
  12. Gianmaria — “Mostro”
  13. Olly — “Polvere”
  14. Anna Oxa — “Sali”

The remaining 14 acts will perform their songs during night 2 on Wednesday 8 February.

I’ve gone and looked at some of the songs and I have to say, Mr.Rain and the lyrics of his song stand out SO MUCH to me. They are VERY emotional when translated into english. Not sure why voting was so low last night but the video of his performance has SHOT UP! He will be a dark horse in the competition!

He’d have to do it anyway if he wins. The song is 46 seconds longer than it can be for ESC.

Why IS people so politically correct? The reason why Blanco was destroying the garden was basically because he was high. He was pissed off for whatever technical reason and high for just one not so technical reason.

If Mengoni wins Sanremo with that atrocious entry, I just hope he ends up taking a different song to Eurovision. It’s February now and the final of SR will be very close to Valentine’s Day, so it’s understandable people appreciate a dated and bland ballad more. Plus the context of SR is different. It makes it for a cosier warmer atmosphere. But EV is in May, at the start of summer, and it’s all about the party vibes and bringing European nations together for a joyful occasion. Not to mention it would be almost impossible for the Italian delegation to… Read more »

Marco‘s song makes me tear up everytime. People hating in the comments clearly have no taste or expect a classic „Eurovision song“ which Sanremo never intends to deliver. They stay authentic (Which is the Number one rule in Eurovision actually).

what a waste 2014 was in terms of Eurovision. Controvento was the perfect entry for the contest. How unfair to Arisa of all people, being the only winner to ever get excluded from the option when she clearly wanted to go to Eurovision.

Colin

Reply to  Ari

I agree. Arisa still wants to go, and she earned that right 9 years ago. I have said that *if* Rai had decided on picking their 2021 entrant internally (which they did not, but there was a chance at the time), that Diodato should have the first refusal, and Arisa the second. She should have went in 2014. Add insult to injury that ”La mia citta” is by far the weakest song Italy had in ESC since 1990. Not bad if compared to actually weak entries from some other countries, but for Italian standards, this was shockingly average.

It would be really interesting to know the reasoning behind the 2014 decision and who was behind it. Selecting THAT song when Arisa won Sanremo looks like a vendetta against her. It was probably just carelessness but that is bad enough. Everything was right with Arisa. The best song and an artist who really wanted it. Others got the ticket who didn’t even care one way or another.

It probably wasn’t personal on RAI’s part, but it was such a poor choice. Contravento is a very lovely song, and would have been a much better choice. I really hope that Arisa wins Sanremo again and goes to Eurovision.

At the time it was not necessarily Sanremo’s winner the one who was meant to take part to Eurovision.
ESC singers like Gualazzi or Zilli did not win Sanremo.
The year Emma Marrone won Sanremo, she didn’t go to Eurovision, just like Arisa.

I think 2015 was the first time since their return that the Sanremo winner got first refusal. Arisa would have known that she wasn’t going, because Emma had already been chosen. Same with 2013, Marco had already been chosen before Sanremo, it’s just coincidence that he went on to win it.

Colin

So, Emma was chosen *before* Sanremo? That’s interesting. I think that winner having the first refusal is a very natural thing. I’m surprised it wasn’t like that earlier. Mengoni winning Sanremo might have been partially influenced by the hype that he’s going to Eurovision anyway, but in that particular case, it’s hard for me to believe there were many options in the selection, as L’essenziale is outstanding!

If I remember right, and maybe I don’t, he had been chosen before Sanremo but not actually announced as Italy’s song until the final was over. I just searched Wiwi for information on Emma, and there was an article about her representing the country from December 2013.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, that’s also true. Emma was denied the opportunity beforehand. I have no idea why the Sanremo winner didn’t have the right of first refusal before 2015. In FiK this year, they at least had a sensible explanation by saying that the ESC representative will be decided by 100% televote. Who picked the ESC representative out of Sanremo artists before? And by which method?

Jonas
Jonas

Reply to  Colin

I think it was just RAI producers, with the HoD. Rafael Gualazzi wasn’t in the “big artists” section of Sanremo in 2011, he was a newcomer. Nina Zilli was in Sanremo 2012, but with a different song than the one she brought to Baku. It probably took them a while to sink back into the Eurovision vibe after their long absence, and took them a few years to realise that it was worthy of a Sanremo winner.

Mengoni would not get in the top 10.

I haven’t listened to this year’s EV entries, admittingly, but judging from the last 5 years alone, there were always at least 10 tracks better than his song. Honestly, what he’s bringing to Sanremo this year is very very bland and dated.

Amadeus said during the live he was in his dressroom, which is not far from the stage (he was showing it during the wandering behind the stage with Chiara Ferragni) and he wasn’t aware. I guess he has a TV in the dressing room. He could see. Anyway, I guess it was his task or the task of the musical conductor to stop the orchestra and redo it. It happened other times. I would like to remind everyone that the main purpose for the artists in Sanremo is to present their new project (or for young people to make themselves known at a national level), not to go to Eurovision. It’s a national celebration that involves the whole country, from adults to children. For this reason maybe there may be frequent artists or songs similar to those of the past years. People do not vote according to the competition, but simply following their own tastes. The artists that Italy sends to Eurovision are usually very successful in Italy and summarize the national… Read more »

The interesting point is that even not trying to win, Italy brings some of the best quality to the ESC every year. I cannot think of another country which has brought better music than Italy in the last decade, and all thanks to the high quality of Sanremo in general. Also important to highlight that Italian music promotes its own style and that is some uniqueness that should be fostered in other countries too.

I just saw it now. What an embarrassing moment. Perhaps not as embarrassing as the duo who split mid-performance in 2020, but embarrassing nonetheless. Imagine all the effort florists have put into designing those bouquets. Sure, it was RAI’s issue to resolve technical issues, but it was still wrong from Blanco to react this way.

what baffles me is that nobody intervened and stopped the music. Blanco clearly alerted them that he was having technical problems before he started his tantrum and yet nobody came. This leads me to believe that the organizers are quite happy with the performance and its backlash. Sure, only Blanco is responsible for his behavior but it is an outrage nobody did anything to help him when he clearly asked for it. This leads me to believe it was either staged, or more likely, they enjoyed his little outburst

I mean, yeah… It’s not something to get him ”cancelled” over, but it’s still a bad behavior that has to be pointed out. It’s about the effort people were putting into arranging these flowers. Then again, it’s perhaps stylistically a tad old-fashioned – although I think she sells it well -, and the sala stampa tends to only treat the veterans with deference if they keep up with the times. The demoscopic jury will probably place her higher. Will you be around tonight?

I will, and I am looking forward to exchanging opinions with you, Sabrina, Jonas, and others as the songs perform. The good aspect of the stretched commercial breaks and intervals of Sanremo is that there’s plenty of time to comment. I’ve read your comments below, and it was a fun read.

Next time Italy hosts, they should just use the Sanremo stage. Looks good.

Sanremo set design works in Sanremo because the stage available is the one of a theatre, like the Ariston. She space available is tiny, as you could see live during the wandering of Amadeus and Chiara Ferragni on the left backstage (with Instagram live feed). To fill up the wide stage of the Palasport Olimpico, it’s another story. Let’s be sincere and face the truth. If any set design of Sanremo, brought to eurovision, will encounter lot of critics because of the absence of the huge ledwall on the back. The ledwall is like a drug. If you don’t have… Read more »

I inform you that behind the scenography of sanremo there is a giant ledwall that covers the wall

I know. But it is not directly behind the eyesight of the main central cameras like in the ESC. If you check, when there is a closeup they mainly shoot the ledwalls on the front of the stairs. You cannot use then to project complicate graphics as it happens on the ledwall in the ESC.

Ultimo vocal performance was not on point. Additionally, I don’t believe he can make a good candidate for Eurovision.

Am I the only one who absolutely loved “Supereroi” by Mr.Rain? I know he’s vocals’s not the best (he’s rapper), but the children were perfect addition, they covered his vocals imperfection and the performance was really emotional and immediately likeble

Just listening to the songs now. I can already safely say that I will be missing Irama this year and that I won’t be joining the Marco bandwagon. I listened to the live version twice and now the studio version and I don’t think it’s all that great. I find it rather lengthy. Now. Ultimo on the other hand has a theme a like a lot. An ode to the dawn. I think this is the better song.

I absolutely loved Marco Mengoni’s song and performance. I did not understand a word, but it was mesmerizing. Italian is just such a beautiful language! Goose bumps and all, and gosh, he is handsome.

Eurofans biased towards Elodie. She won’t win. Marco had a great performance. Maria Sattei could surprise, but for the chemistry of Coma Cosa nailed it for me. They are the ones too beat.

I cried listening to Marco’s song. His voice is impeccable, the song progresses nicely and his emotions and charisma seem so genuine. Was expecting more from Ultimo and was slightly disappointed with his entry.

Unpopular opinion but I dont like most of the songs. I just like Ana Oxa, Mr. Rain, Cugini Di Campagna, Olly and Colla Zio. I think most of them didnt have the best vocals, most of the favorites… and there are a lot of songs overrated by the press juries…IMO.

gIANMARIA, Elodie and Olly are my favs by far. Quite disappointed with Mengoni and Ultimo. Both of their songs could result in a medium-low scoreboard in Eurovision.

So I didn’t get to watch Sanremo last night but I listened to some of the songs mentioned here and higher rated ones to see what they were like. Sort of disappointed that I didnt really love Elodie’s, Marco’s or Ultimo’s songs, although I can see why Marco was first in the results. The only song I enjoyed was Olly’s but I’d imagine that wouldn’t get selected and even if it did, its autotuned (stylistically but yknow esc wouldn’t allow). Sanremo might be like FiK where I just dont get it (although tbf I liked Brividi, Zitti Buoni and Soldi).… Read more »

Don’t think we heard the winner yet because I’m sure somethings going to shock me in Semi 2. But if we’re to assume there’s nothing groundbreaking there, it’s definitely Elodie to ESC for me. She was my winner already in 2020 and I’d just love to have her at ESC. And this song is definitely my favorite of the current revealed line-up.

The interpretation? The voice maybe? The emotions the song gives?

Artistically not at all surprised it’d be rated first by the juries, but if we’re speaking of songs in the scope of Eurovision readyness it’s just not the thing most would be looking for.

Elodie’s the best on that front still I think, she’s got a bit of a dark pop R&B sound that isn’t very common at ESC and super enjoyable and it’d be my pick.

But I think we’re going to hear the winner in Semi 2, nothing really struck me as THE winner yet.

Again. Always this mistake. Sanremo is not the selection for Eurovision. Incidentally the one who wins goes to Eurovision, but nobody (maybe except RAI, if she has a way to control or change the vote) is selecting a song as a winner because of the chances it has to go to Eurovision. Do you think Italians selected Måneskin in 2021 because they were sure it could win at Eurovision?

No but after 2021 and coming second also in 2019, Italians should see it seriously as a competitive platform. Times have changed!

Honey you are on a Eurovision fan blog I respect Sanremo as its own contest but I’m here to listen to potential Eurovision entries and a good bunch of us aren’t here for Sanremo itself so we often rate things based on how we’re used to it in our own scope.

It is not a mistake, it is a difference of perspective.

I think it’s just a pretty weak San Remo selection. I don’t love Marco’s song but of the bunch it’s the strongest for me, “Due” doesn’t do anything for me either.

It’s the chilled indie vibe, I’ve enjoyed both their most recent Sanremo performances, the two leads have a nice connection and the songs have a melancholic yet loving bond which is difficult to achieve.

Same. Just listened to the songs from night 1, and ranked them somewhere around the middle. It’s okay. Just okay. I understand Marco winning, and I understand Elodie being 2nd (even if I think that Andromeda was more immediate), but Coma_Cose 3rd? Ahead of Leo Gassmann, Mara Sattei, and Ultimo? Not to mention ahead of Anna Oxa who finished – gasp – last, below much lower impact entries? Thankfully, this is just the press ranking, and juries / televoters might have different opinions.

Predictable but quite reasonable top 2 in the end, my personal preference and highlight of this first night remains Elodie, but obviously still have to listen to everything again before making a proper assessment. Ariete’s song in particular also seemed like something I would enjoy in studio. Overall, the general level seems to have dropped compared to the highs of 2020-2021, there are still some big hitters left to perform in that second half so we’ll have to see tho.
