Dutch Eurovision fans are still waiting to hear Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper’s song contest entry. With only a few weeks to go before the Eurovision 2023 submission deadline, AVROTROS has yet to announce a release date.

Despite that, Eurovision 2019 winner Duncan Laurence has shed a tiny ray of light on the entry, which was earlier rumoured to be called “Chasing Highs”

In an interview with Lithuanian broadcaster LRT, Duncan Laurence was asked about the Dutch entry for Eurovision 2023, which he co-wrote together with his long-time partner Jordan Garfield.

The Pabandom iš Naujo! guest judge said he had high hopes for the Netherlands’ chance of winning Eurovision this year:

“If I didn’t believe you could win, I wouldn’t participate.

We wrote the Eurovision song together – them, me, and my partner Jordan. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you more about the song yet, because it hasn’t been released yet.

But I promise you will hear it soon. We are currently ironing out the final details to make everything sound perfect.

I am a perfectionist, like the rest of our team. But that’s what you must do when you’re preparing for Eurovision. To think through every step, every detail, so that when we finally get to Liverpool, everything will be calm, of course, we will be fully prepared.”

Duncan visited Lithuania as part of his Baltic promo tour for his single “Electric Life”. Earlier in the week he also stopped off in Estonia and Latvia – where he performed at the country’s selection show Supernova.

AVROTROS has yet to reveal the date on which the Netherlands’ Eurovision 2023 entry will be revealed. However, rumour has it that this might be 2 March.

What do you think about the comments from Duncan Laurence about the Eurovision 2023 entry? Are you excited to hear the end product by Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper? Let us know in the comments down below!

Let’s wait for the song first shall we. Before we start drawing conclusions.
If the song is good at release, everyone miraculously forgets everything negative very quickly…

It’s cute that he wants to win… BUT we have Noa Kirel this year and she is not coming to play she is coming to slay! she will be the winner this year, she have the “dream team” and the money also to give europe EVERYTHING!!! OMG I Can’t wait!!!

a lot of Dutch people love to be negative and critisize everything, when you look at it that way Mia is a real Dutchie! So I really don’t understand what people are talking about?

Y’all are tripping. Duncan’s music after Arcade was amazing. He’s clearly a great songwriter.

The level of mean remarks about Duncan is blowing my mind! He wrote Arcade, Wouter produced it.. he may not have hits like Arcade but his music is great.. Electric life,Someone else, I want it all, Feel something to name a few.. his love for Eurovision is real, he’s just confident about the song they wrote.. who can blame him

Wouter also wrote it, not just Duncan, four songwriters overall.

The fact people hate on him having a winning mentality is just laughable. If only everyone had this mentality this competition would be hella exciting

Mean comments?! You should learn the difference between stating an opinion, and being mean to someone. You and probably many people similar to you, need to question your discussion abilities, and that is NOT offensive nor rude, it’s just a positive criticism, but keep living as you like 😉

The question is, is it necessary to be negative? And will the negativity harm another person. If it does, why leave a comment no one is waiting for ? Share love, not hate.

He’s aiming for gold? Well, he did win esc that year overall but….for a singer who didn’t win neither jury or televote section in BOTH of the semi and the final, he’s delusional and cringy at best lol Also, Mia? Really??After publicaly stating she doesn’t like Netherlands and doesn’t see it as her home, it’s a bold move to take Dutch people tax money and represent HERSELF (as she obviously doesn’t care for the country) at ESC ? Netherlands is truly cringy this year lol

The Dutch are the least nationalist people in Europe, according to polls, but even then I’ve noticed that people in the Netherlands are very outraged (and with good reason) with her remarks

I can’t really say that I’ve noticed a lot of outrage. I’ve been reading up a bit about this “matter” and it seems it’s mostly in certain sections of the Dutch (and it must be said sections which usually don’t care about Eurovision) are mad. But well, she’s totally unknown, nobody really knows her story and she’s said something clumsy. Does it really matter that much that she doesn’t feel at home here? Does one have to be a patriot to take part in Eurovision?

If he is taking money and resources from the country to represent himself, then yes, it really meters!

Also, I guess the downvote is only by people who loves NETHERLANDS! Not by people who disagree with what I said (as I said nothing but the truth!), so we can clearly say that Dutch and Dutch supporters ARE nationalists and patriots lol

I’m not nationalist in the slightest, but it’s so cringy when privileged people say “oh I don’t like my country” especially if its a progressive country like the Netherlands. You are so lucky, be a bit more aware of your privileges.

I get what you mean, it sounds a bit snobby. However, one can be unhappy in even the most perfect country, if you’re not really fitting in with the majority mentality.

Sometimes I don’t like the Netherlands as well, because people are getting more and more narrow minded, but it doesn’t mean I’m not proud of my Dutch nationality, give her a break… don’t make this an issue. I hope you feel good about yourself.

I had to pause myself before I posted something. But his comments about not entering unless he thought he could win doesn’t completely sit right with me. Particularly from a gentleman who has had no successful follow up to the worldwide hit that was Arcade. And if he wants me to believe he was the songwriting mastermind behind Arcade and not Wouter Hardy who since then has had a better track record composing Tout L’Universe and this year’s Bridges then ok. Credit too for English Will Knox and Swedish Joel Sjöö for the composition. And not surprising none of them… Read more »

No doubt he is a great performer but he is not a great songwritter. After Arcade his career has been going nowhere unfortunately…And, as someone said, this photo makes me uneasy – him in the center, his bottom protégé on the left and this woman with short hair on the left…And he is not even performing…

I hate to hear that the artist is “finalizing” their Eurovision songs . Firstly, because it makes me think that it is going to be overproduced. Secondly, because no matter what else they say about the process of writing, it always makes me feel like writing it is difficult and painful to them. I feel that writing a song should go smoothly and be pretty quick. Please note that I am not a musical professional and writing a song probably is much more complicated than I realize. But to me the perfect situation is when an artist is writing a… Read more »

I hope this is not another avrotros country club scenario like when they chose Trijntje Oosterhuis in 2015 because Anouk was the songwriter of ‘walk along’. I would pay money to listen to the songs they receive in the submission process.

Idk if there’s Dutch people around on Wiwi, but on the ESC Reddit, there’s quite a few Dutch members who are hoping for a NQ “so Mia could get humbled”. Did she say something controversial that I missed?

Mia Nicolai has given a interview in the past about how the Netherlands is nothing for her, she never felt home here and how ‘fleeing’ the netherlands for USA was like the best thing ever. That doesn’t really rhyme with what some people envision when they think about an artist representing your country in eurovision. The second maybe even bigger thing is that she teased ‘a huge surprise for the future’ on her social media back in MARCH when the avrotros song submission process was still in full progress and after they got revealed as the Dutch act she confirmed… Read more »

I think it’s because on a talk show a video was shown of her talking about how she doesn’t like The Netherlands and never wanted to be there, wanting to live in the USA, so it’s funny that she is representing Netherlands now, plus the whole internal selection was sketchy since a while ago she said there were exciting news 2 days after the internal selection started, they got together for esc specifically and said that they got selected because the song was great, although they didn’t have a song back then whatsoever, so it made it seem they got… Read more »

I don’t agree with Duncan’s attitude. I know he means well, but it’s not the right way to think. If he didn’t think they could win, he wouldn’t participate? Seems a bit ruthless, and gives very high expectations which come with pressure. Also planning and detailing every little movement and breath… not good. Music by itself should always be enough. If you come last, so be it. Learn from Jeangu. Learn from Sanremo. Much healthier.

Jeangu’s biggest problem was that he represented his country on home soil and juries and televoters hardly ever reward just countries. He did quite well and was an admirable internal selection giving us a fresh take on a different side of Dutch culture and complicated history. He should always be proud of his wonderful performance.

While, I think it’s too soon for the Netherlands to win again with only a four year gap, i hope they send another good song again. I’d hate to see the miss out in the final for the first time since 2015. I also hope that the song has televote appeal to make it over.
