Norway in Eurovision 2023: Alessandra with “Queen of Kings”

Alessandra Mele is a 20-year-old Italian-Norwegian popstar. She was born in Pietra Ligure, Savona, to an Italian father and a Norwegian mother. Growing up in Italy, she started her singing career out young, winning a local talent show at age 12. She moved to Norway in 2021, and is now studying at the Lillehammer Institute of Music Production and Industries.

Alessandra won Melodi Grand Prix, earning the right to represent Norway at Eurovision 2023. She earned a grand total of 233 points from the international juries and the voting public, winning by a margin of 95 points over runner-up Ulrikke.

What do the “Queen of Kings” lyrics mean?

“Queen of Kings” is a triumphant anthem with lyrics rooted in female empowerment. With lyrics like “broken her cage, threw out the keys”, Alessandra reminds the listener of their power to overcome adversities and take control of their own destiny.

The melodies and rhythms heard throughout the track emulate those used in sea shanties and traditional Norwegian folk songs. The lyrics also contain references to Norwegian folklore: “her smile awakes the northern light”, “the warrior of north and southern seas”.

“Queen of Kings” lyrics — Alessandra (Norway Eurovision 2023)

She, queen of the kings
Running so fast, beating the wind
Nothing in this world could stop the spread of her wings
She, queen of the kings
Broken her cage, threw out the keys
She will be the warrior of north and southern seas

Got raven hair, it’s dark as night
Icy eyes, out of sight, out of sight
Her heart in spite, is warm and bright
Her smile awakes the northern light

Looking out she calls
Lai, lai-da-dai-dai-da
Who will conquer all, all?

Her name is she, queen of the kings
Running so fast, beating the wind
Nothing in this world could stop the spread of her wings (hey)
She, queen of the kings
Broken hеr cage, threw out the keys
She will be the warrior of north and southern seas

A firestone forged in flames
The wildest card, run the game, run the game
Can’t stay the same in this world of change
Don’t fear the pain, just break the chain

Looking out she calls
Lai, lai-da-dai-dai-da
Who will conquer all, all?

Her name is she, queen of the kings
Running so fast, beating the wind
Nothing in this world could stop the spread of her wings
She, queen of the kings
Broken her cage, threw out the keys (hey)
She will be the warrior of north and southern seas

Lai, la-da-dia
Ra, rai-ri-rai-rai-ri
Lai, la-da-dia
Lai, li-li-la
Lai, la-da-dia
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
Ah-ah-ah-ah

Her name is she, queen of the kings
Running so fast, beating the wind (hey)
Nothing in this world could stop the spread of her wings
She, queen of the kings
Broken her cage, threw out the keys (hey)
She will be the warrior of north and southern seas (hey)

Oh the amount of people who said the exact same thing about Spain last year – despite having seen the entire performance beforehand as well. LOL!

Some songs you just KNOW will do well, no matter what you yourself feel about the song….

The singer can sing and the song is quite good but I can’t help but think that some parts of it are a rip off Armenia 2008 (or9).

When I listen to that song or watch her two live performances, time flies! It’s really well done and performed. I like the song, the staging, the energy but most of all,I like the cohesion between the lyrics, the music, the production, the singer and the performance on stage.Yes, it screams Eurovision to my ears , but for the good reasons:it’s fun, entertaining and epic.I hope Alessandra will sail through to the final and reach the top of the scoreboard.

Let me tell you something, no one will like Israel on this site, no matter what song represents Israel. I’ve seen the comments here over the years, the comments are always negative and skeptical. Even in 2018 they underestimated “TOY” and Israel still won. I also saw the filmed reaction of the “WIWI team” to Netta’s victory and it was a shock and why? Because they hoped “FUEGO” would win. So I really don’t care what people think on this site. I will still continue to give good reviews to the Israeli song, because if I don’t then no one… Read more »

I am eagerly waiting for Israel song and have high hopes for Noa Kirel. However when I see a post like this I can just roll my eyes. I’m not sure what you want people to say?! – Noa didn’t release her song yet so are you expecting people to bow down beforehand?! If you want to support Israel’s entry then I suggest you don’t post until after the competition ends as you’re just turning people off!

Not a massive fan of the song but why is everyone ecting like its illegal for men to write songs abt women empowerment. Plus it’s not like it was all men in the songwriting team. It was likely alessandra who came up with the idea and the others just came up with the words. Even if that wasn’t the case then it’s not that deep lmao

Absolutely absurd, I agree. This particular song was written by 2 women and 2 men, the performer being one of the women. I don’t understand the criticism *at all*. But even if it was written by 4 men – so what? I honestly, truly don’t understand this fixation with writers having to match with the content. It actually kills creativity when you confine artistic expression only to telling your own story.

Who is doing that? I’d just like to say that why I put up the songwriters in these comments is that their names were completely missing from the article. Considering it is about their song, I felt they deserved credit. That’s all. I can’t see anyone complaining.

Let it be an anthem for the women of Iran as well – supporting the ongoing revolution!!! Love Alessandra, she will make both Norway and Italy proud, no matter how it all ends up in May – as she has already made us proud!

It is an anthem for the women of Iran as well. We had all women in mind whilst writing these lyrics. Not even women only, but people that has to fight for their right to be who they are or what they stand for. Even Mother Earth and her struggles to survive came up during this session.
SHE can be so much. In the end it’s the listener who decides how to apply it to fit their own struggles and hopefully to get some empowerment from listening to it.

Peace

The most overrated entry we have thus far and it’ll likely stay that way. Downvote me all you want, but I refuse to accept THIS was the best Norway had to offer. Such a killer national final and they chose such a poor song 🙁

The same terrible comments where before the final in Norway. If you cant listen and see that this is a massive song, then you and the other 18 must be both blind and not have a tone in your life. I bet you can’t listen to a song without it being slower that a bike uphill.
This is maybe a Eurovision winner song, and it’s no coincidence it was given 75 percent of the votes from both televotes and jury, luckily people have more taste than the average wiwi…

Setting the male songwriters apart, you’d think by this description that the lyrics themselves would elaborate more into that feminine energy, isn’t it?

Book recommendation for anyone interested in this topic. “This Woman’s Work” Essays on music, edited by Sinéad Gleeson and Kim Gordon. Published to challenge the historic narrative of music and music writing being written by men, for men, This Woman’s Work seeks to confront the male dominance and sexism that have been hard-coded in the canons of music, literature, and film and has forced women to fight pigeon-holing or being side-lined by carving out their own space. Women have to speak up, to shout louder to tell their story – like the auteurs and ground-breakers featured in this collection, including:… Read more »

This song with Marco Mengoni’s song are the only ones out of 15 that are charting accross Europe and the World, a good sign for a very good placement for Norway in May.

And? When a song is charting at this level it means it has appeal, it’s always a good sign before entering a contest did I say you need to chart absolutely to get a good placement? Or that she will absolutely get a good ranking for sure because of that? No, I just said it’s a good sign.
