Iceland is about the begin its journey to choose an act for Eurovision 2023. This quest starts with semi-final 1 of Söngvakeppnin 2023 on Saturday, where five acts will compete for two qualification spots.

Earlier this week, we asked you to name your favourites from the semi-final.

After totting up all the votes, we’re now in a position to reveal the results.

Diljá is a favourite in Söngvakeppnin 2023 semi-final 1

It was a fairly tight race in the end. But the act who managed to achieve poll position is Diljá. Her song “Lifandi inni í mér” (“Alive inside me”) picked up around one third of the vote, with 265 votes heading her way.

Diljá has Söngvakeppnin winning experience on her team. She co-wrote the song with Pálmi Ragnar Ásgeirsson, who was one of the writers of “Unbroken” (Iceland’s Eurovision 2015 entry). Could Diljá go on to lift the Söngvakeppnin trophy as well?

If it was up to y’all, the other qualifier from semi-final 1 would be Celebs. The trio consisting of three siblings bring a nostalgic flair of the ’80s to the competition with their song “Dómsdagsdans” (“Doomsday Dance”).

Celebs were only just behind in the poll. They secured 252 votes, which is 31.54% of all those cast.

Full results: Who should qualify from semi-final 1 of Iceland’s Söngvakeppnin 2023?

  1. Diljá – “Lifandi inni í mér” – 33.17%, 265 votes
  2. Celebs – “Dómsdagsdans” – 31.54%, 252 votes
  3. BRAGI – “Stundum snýst heimurinn gegn þér ” – 19.02%, 152 votes
  4. MÓA – “Glötuð ást” – 8.76%, 70 votes
  5. Benedikt – “Þora” – 7.51%, 60 votes

Total Votes: 799

Semi-final 1 kicks off at 19:45 GMT (20:45 CET). It will be hosted by Unnsteinn Manuel Stefánsson, Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir and Sigurður Þorri Gunnarsson.

In the semi-finals, all acts have to sing the Icelandic version of their song. Those who make it to the grand final must then perform in the language they would sing at Eurovision if selected.

Two acts will qualify to the grand final. Exactly who that is will be entirely down to the public. Following both semi-finals, a jury may then choose a wildcard act to become the fifth finalist.

Do you agree with the results? Are Diljá and Celebs the best picks from Söngvakeppnin 2023 semi-final 1? Let us know in the comments below.

Among all the selections launching the songs at the similar time, it took me awhile to listen to the Icelandic ones. This is a cute selection, with many likable entries, but no standouts. The likable ones aren’t far apart in quality either, which makes me somewhat indifferent how this unfolds. But with the right staging choices, and keeping it in Icelandic, I can see a few achieving a similar result to Systur last year. Which is still another potential qualification for Iceland.

Dilja and Celebs are absolutely corrent. Add Silja Ros from semi 2 and Iceland should have a nice pick.

will be a very nice contest with not so much traffic from other finals & semis but the true magic will come in semi 2 then.

That’s what I’ve been saying, it’s unnecessarily long. In any case, they could do a super final the same night with the artists performing in their chosen language

Which is really annoying. The Daughters would have gone to ESC if they had stopped doing that superfinal BS

It’s a chance to get to hear the songs in two languages.
