Loreen "Tattoo" Melodifestivalen 2023
Photo: Alma Bengtsson / SVT

It’s a turbulent time at the bookmakers, and the Eurovision 2023 betting odds are beginning to alter. After months on the top spot with the bookies, reigning champions Ukraine have slipped down the rankings, and a new favourite has emerged. Sweden is now the bookmakers’ favourite to win Eurovision 2023.

The shift comes after former Eurovision champion Loreen debuted her new song “Tattoo”, which she will compete in the fourth heat Melodifestivalen — Sweden’s Eurovision pre-selection show — this weekend. Fans and bookies alike think the “Euphoria” singer could make a triumphant return and pick up another Swedish win, 12 years after she won the contest in Baku.

According to Oddschecker, Sweden is the most likely candidate to take home the Eurovision trophy this May. Ukraine’s Tvorchi follow closely behind in second. Finland, Norway, and the United Kingdom round out the top five most likely to take home the song contest crown.

Eurovision 2023 odds: Sweden favourite to win

Sweden is yet to decide its Eurovision act. But if fan reception is anything to go by, Loreen could be a lock-in for the Swedish ticket to Liverpool. The rehearsal snaps from inside the Malmö Arena show Loreen performing inches beneath a huge LED ceiling as she around in a sandstorm of beige and pink hues.

Elsewhere on the bookies radar is Finland — which is also yet to decide its Eurovision entry. They’ll choose their artist and song this weekend at the UMK 2023 final, as seven superstar acts vying to fly the Finnish flag in Merseyside this May.

Norway’s Alessandra also remains a contender. The Norwegian-Italian songstress went viral on TikTok after her Melodi Grand Prix victory, suggesting “Queen of Kings” could pick up a good televote score from the younger audience.

The betting market puts host country United Kingdom in fifth place, as Poland, Czechia, Spain, Israel and France fill out the top ten.

Eurovision 2023 odds

  1. Sweden — 11/4
  2. Ukraine — 7/2
  3. Finland — 19/2
  4. Norway — 23/2
  5. United Kingdom — 15/1
  6. Poland — 35/2
  7. Czechia — 20/1
  8. Spain — 25/1
  9. Israel — 25/1
  10. France — 35/1
  11. Italy — 35/1
  12. Netherlands — 37/1
  13. Armenia — 50/1
  14. Georgia — 50/1
  15. Croatia — 50/1

If any other country would compete with the Loreen entry it would have win 100 %. But the jealousy against Sweden has no limits in this competition during the last couple of years so we wont win.

I do not Finlands song or whatever it is. It is so edgy (not) it is catchy (cha cha cha cmon) is such a great voice (hardly even singing). Ukraine is not good either though and Finland will do very well even I hate it becaue I find it so boring. It is this kind of predictable chock value that some people fall for.

Do not like Loreen and do not understand why she is so eager to present the song at the contest. If her first victory made her successful in Sweden, why she wants to place instead of someone new, younger, for whom this placement can open the way to the top. It is not a fare competition when someone who had already win the Eurovision is competing with young artists….
The same I would say about any other winner who wants to place again at the contest

Well, this can at least be traced to Johnny Logan, who represented Ireland and secured two championships in 1980 and 1987.
Also, despite the influence of their fan base, if the performances are good enough, there are no reasons to assume younger artists cannot do better than the more experienced ones. (For example, Alexander Rybak only placed 15 in 2018.) Flo Rida has not brought many points to San Marino in 2021, either.
And honestly, it sounds ageism to assume younger artists cannot do better, or the experienced artists should be excluded.

I’ve heard and seen Tatoo performance and I think it’s beautiful and very atmospheric. The lightings are gorgeous, on TV screen it will be very nice even if I still don’t really understand the concept, it’s very artsy, some lighting reminds me of her statements performance. The song is nice very Loreen, I love when it builds, her voice is nice, I prefer the building verses rather than the chorus but it’s still nice, the talking part I’m not into it, the end is not enough memorable imo but I can see the appeal totally mainly in Loreen’s fans because… Read more »

I’ve watched it too and I think on TV with the good sound it will be better, you can’t really heard the beat of the song in this leaked vid. You can add if an act is liked overall, too much for their taste, and moreover if it’s not their country, they will come here and say “I don’t get the hype” and will try to discredit it as much as they can …classical. They can’t stand somebody or a country getting too much love, it’s too much for them, so they will systematically find something bad to say about this act, as if suddenly people would stop loving it because of that, it has the opposite impact, people will love it more….the day they will understand it’s so useless,… Read more »

Kuumaa have a lot of fans in Finland so I wouldn’t be surprised either if they win. It’s just a shame as we have so many bands already this year at Eurovision that I’m worried they are going to cancel each other out.

I forgot but look Italy this year, they sent Marco who managed to be 7th in Eurovision already, so the odds won’t put him at the top it’s logical but it doesn’t mean that he couldn’t be in the top 5 or more this time, it’s based on his past result because it’s a data the bookies use too.

It’s why sometimes the odds shift dramaticaly over-night, with certain entrys rising dramatically in the odds yet after a few hours ot a day or two, the odds are magically rebalanced so thry drop back to where or very near to where they originally were.

To people who claim there is nothing new in Loreen’s song: She did present something new with “Statements” in 2017 and she could not make to the national final. Agree but I think there is nothing new and unique in Loreen’s song. Sweden’s entry last year was more original, unique and different compared to previous Sweden’s entries. The odds aren’t a ranking order. So if someone is in 25th position it doesn’t mean they are worse or less liked than someone in 15th position. It is ranking songs based on likelihood to win. So a super popular song could be lower than you think it should be because the bookies don’t think it has winner vibes, not that it’s ranked low or worse in comparison to others overall.

It’s not like she’s bringing anything new in the game, is she? So far I see only victory written all over it with either Norway or Italy. I’m leaning towards “Due Vite” more as it was done to perfection live. And, well, obviously, I support chuto tuto, but let’s get real there – Baltic amber is not for every pompous European ears to like.

I have seen some news in Italian press that during his more recent interview in Italian TV RAI1; Mengoni has said that he is open to choose another song for Eurovision and he may choose one of his songs from his records.
For Loreen’s song; I agree with you. The staging is good but the song didn’t impress me with its chorus.

So you are saying that Loreen brought nothing new( true ) but Alessandra (godess) and Marco DID bring sth new? The song alessandra brought is what we’ve been listening to for the past 13 years, she simply delivered it much better, but still nothing new. Plus marco…

Well, don’t put your words in my mouth. Thanks. I didn’t mean to say Alessandra or Marco brought up something new. But I haven’t felt this hype regarding those two from literally seeing a 30-second snippet either. Loreen, on the other hand, is extremely hyped, as if she’s going to win everything, including Melfest and the ESC. Thus, I was asking what she’s bringing new to the game in case she’s the reason behind Sweden discrowning Ukraine by quite a margin even when we know Loreen once failed to win Melfest for the second time. Nothing, yet she is seen… Read more »

I don’t see why she should be held to a higher standard than everyone..almost no Eurovision winners bring anything new to the game. Like, ever.

And most televoters won’t even remember her from 11 years ago. So they won’t be comparing “Tattoo” to “Euphoria” and judging ir as laclign innovating. And the professional juries do not penalize entries for öacl of innovation either.

I don’t like it when past winners come back to Eurovision. Like, you’ve already won, what do you want? Let others have the chance. You’re competing against yourself and you’ll probably, statistically speaking, regret it. I don’t have anything against Sweden, on the contrary, I love Swedes and I usually enjoy their entries. As an Israeli, I hated it when Dana international competed again. I knew she wouldn’t win again, and wasn’t surprised when we didn’t even qualify to the final. Recently Dana gave an interview here saying her 2nd Eurovision experience was a karmatic punishment for being too greedy.… Read more »

even loreen herself stated in 2017 that she doesn’t care abt qualifying with Statements. She just wanted to deliver her message

First of all Ding Dong by Dana International was mediocre AF, why would you compete again if the song wasn’t up to the level of Diva.. I personally think everybody should do what they wanna do.. ofcourse Melo is a great pre selection for Eurovision but besides that most artists get a hit record as a result of that in Sweden.. On Loreen.. she onzes profesionalism and don’t we want that in Eurovision? She has lots of competition and if she wins it will be deserved.. she is a classy artistic performer and Tattoo seems like a great track let… Read more »

I mean to an extent I can understand that logic because it can appear greedy but i’m also of the mindset (and this applies to returning artists too) that at the end of the day, if you put forward a quality entry with a professional and well executed stage package, I can’t really complain if you win, regardless of previous participations.

Also on the note of artists who’ve returned (at least in recent memory), I think Lena gave us another quality entry that I wouldn’t have hated to win. Dana International and Alexander Rybak returned with what I would’ve considered below par entries and their placings are a reflection of their entry.

I think you have a point, simply because many televoters will be thinking the same thing, you’ve already won, let’s give someone else a turn. For proof, look at the poor results of most host countries in the past decade.

As an Irish, I don’t think Niamh Kavanagh should have come back either. I thought at one stage she was going to get…..zero points.

Cool staging in the 30 sek clip but I was a bit disappointed of what more I heard of the song. If you follow the lyrics that are published the 30 sek clip from stage is what comes right after the snippet released yesterday. Maybe this means we have in reality already heard most of the song?

As an Irish Eurovision fan I’ll be sad to see us lose our record, but to be fair, we brought it on ourselves, we stopped trying, our approach to Eurovision is about 20 years behind everyone else, so yeah, Sweden deserve it. They deliver quality songs (most if the time). Sure, juries inflate them most years, but it can’t be denied that they enter songs that can and do have a life outside if the ESC bubble, and actually generate decent hits that do well even with non-ESC fans. I’d Sweden wins, so be it. Though I will say we… Read more »

At least Ireland was always bringing high quality songs with different composers. Sweden tends to bring generic songs with almost same writers and composers; as if they were produced from the same factory

Well Johnny Logan had a contribution on the 3 winning songs, so i couldn’t say that they always used different composers. However, it would be nice to see Ireland coming back strong

Judging how Sweden have done in recent esc history, i wouldn’t be surprised if Sweden became the new record holders before the decades up.

Fully agree with everything you said as a fellow Irish Eurovision fan. It saddens me that I missed our glory years and you could say have watched the contest when we’ve been at possibly some of our lowest points in the contest. We’ve become somewhat of a joke, a country that consistently delivers below par entries and our abysmal record feeds into the negative, snobbish outlook that so many non esc fans have of the contest, the exact same thinking as Britain up until their recent attempt. I really want us to improve but I don’t know if we can… Read more »

To be fair to Sweden Darren, two of their winners were in their own language. Ireland benefitted big time from the language rule. Do you really think Mysterious Woman would have finished second if there had been more songs in English?

I want another country with good song to win Eurovision. Every year we see how overhyped Sweden’s entries are and this is unfair for other countries’ songs. Staging is good but Loreen’s song is generic and mediocre

Yeah but think that, at the end of the day, Sweden is judged really critically just because the expectations are high. And that’s why it is very hard to find a winning entry from Melfest that gives us goosebumps or that is generally popular among the international fans. Moreover Swedish popularity in the odds (and the same think happens with Italy as well) comes as a consequence of its popularity in the televote, not because eurofans are supporting it (actually the contrary happens).

Ok song, cool staging. Really dont think it should win Eurovision, as there are better, more original and deserving songs out there (Finland, Serbia, Poland to mention a few). I’m Swedish so not hating/jealous etc

Thank you for your opinion: I like it so far and I think it deserves a good position… but for a winning performance, I am looking for something new. I think Kaarija could be a good option if it goes for Finland (hopefully so!).

The fact that Sweden is first just because one of the contenders of their national selection is an already winner and she launched one minute of song and 30 seconds of rehearsal just shows how prone Eurofans are of Sweden to win no matter what.

That’s a stupid thing to write. Charlotte Perelli competed again a few year ago and Sweden wasn’t high in the odds because of her. The snippet of Loreen’s song is just sick. You’re either too stubborn to consider it or just on the I-hate-the-Swedish-success toxic wagon of Eurofans. I personally think you’re both
