Tonight Germany found their new Eurovision representatives. Lord of the Lost — the heavy favourites ahead of Unser Lied für Liverpool — made good on the hype. They won the show and will sing their rock anthem “Blood & Glitter” at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool.
They emerged victorious after overcoming 7 other acts. They owe their fate to the public, who put them in first place with 146 points. The jury had them much lower — down in fifth — with just 43 points.

Okay, so they have toured Europe for years and have opened for Iron Maiden – I get that. But this is the classic case of a band modifying their usual style to try to find that elusive “Eurovision sound”. While their style of music is not my cup of earl grey, I would have totally respected them if they sent a song they believed in and truly represented them as artists. This is a big miss for me and I think to quote Bar Refaeli “I’m sorry… zero points”
Yawn! This year ESC is turning into a freakshow with a lot of acts really desperate for attention and very little talent.

Literally, this is the worst song I’ve ever heard in any Eurovision.

Her song is hopelessly outdated and weak in melody and lyrics and vocals. But there are actually worse this year….

I hate how he does the growl/metal vocal for only small portions – his normal singing voice just sucks all life out of the song. They should have had a female operatic vocal for the singing parts and have him chime in here and there with the growling LOL

In my opinion, this year’s German NF was not much different from last year’s when we look at the quality. Some of the middle of the road songs were just presented in a more gimmicky way so they appeared to be more interesting than they actually were. Germany should take note that a sizeable chunk of the audience has voted for a troll act. This sort of national final is alienating the people who actually follow Eurovision for the music and not for the show. I have to give a different opinion on the assessment of this selection being on pair with last year. In fact, I’d place every song here, Ikke included because of the entertainment value, higher than four of the songs from last year, Malik and Felicia excluded. The individual identities are much better realized, and the hooks are for the most part really memorable. This was a huge step in the right direction. But you see, that’s why I emphasized the quality aspect. The difference between our takes is mostly, that you give credit for diversity alone, which I’m not prepared to do. Yes, last year, all the songs could have been on the same album and sung by the same artist, no one would have noticed, whereas this year, you have a rock song, a folk song, an emotional ballad, a party schlager and so on and so forth. I do believe that the quality has risen too. Even drastically so. From an average 4/10 to an average 6 or 7. It’s still a fact that it matters for us who list songs 1-37 or whatnot, but not for those picking up the phone to vote for their one to three favorites. A 7 beats a 4 by a mile on lists, but neither ultimately compells one to vote. Exactly, in Eurovision, being in the middle of everyone’s lists is ultimately the same as being at the bottom of everyone’s lists. James Newman wasn’t that bad, but he still came last. Like you say, you have to be someone’s favourite, and this can only be achieved by having a top notch song. We’re not talking to a child who instead of bringing home a D now brings home a C+ and who we want to encourage to keep up the effort. Another aspect is that Germany is within a group of countries which *really* need to put en effort to go places. In an ideal world it shouldn’t matter, but we know that Sweden would have finished 14th with a song like Concrete Heart, that Ukraine would have finished 16th with a song like Misfit, and that Azerbaijan would have finished 18th with a song like Melodies of Hope. I am really glad that fan favourites like Ronela or Patty flops this year. They were terrible and its hard to understand why the fandom likes so much such amateurs.

I can’t say I share everyone’s enthusiasm. To me, LOFL sounds a lot like Lordi and I don’t expect it to do very well. P.S. Before the Vorentscheid, Germany was 21th among the bookmakers, not it’s 23rd-24th.

France? Zero chance. It will be at best the end of a top 10. Nice song but not special enough to get that much votes from public. I know a lot of people don’t like this idea but if Loreen wins Melodifestivalen, then we’re going for a royal battle between the nordic countries with Finland and Norway that should do great with public too (especially Finland).

For me this is quite a similar situation as with Finland. I respect Germany’s decision in taking a risk like this (Germany of all countries REALLY needed that) but it’s just my thing personally. I wish them the best of luck anyway and hope they don’t finish bottom 5 again.

I like that Germany goes for something else than they have sent the recent years. But the song itself isn’t the most catchy or innovative. It stood out in the German NF but I’m afraid it will comptete with Finland for the public vote in it’s segment and that Finland will get the majority of these vote. But again: glad for the diversity! The older I get the further from popular opinion about eurovision songs I get. I think this is even worse than last year’s German song. It strikes me as a failed cross between Lordi and Hatari. The lyrics seem to have been composed by googling rhymes. I have to admit for me this is the most lack lustre group of entries in a long time. Even the songs I like fall far short of previous years.
No offense but people who’s only reference to rock is eurovision rock songs probably aren’t in a place where they should be making judgment about rock songs.

I personally like Croatia’s song and don’t think blood and glitter is a joke song.
Even though I have to admit fans misjudged Trenuletul, Croatian’s song this year is terrible. Fun to watch but terrible. Doesn’t mean I don’t see them qualifying. In fact I’m scared it qualifies but if it does I’ll accept it.
All of this just to say don’t compare Croatia with Finland this year… they don’t fight in the same category.

The whole song is about oxymorons, so the lyric you mention makes perfect sense. In my opinion, the song is uplifting, we don’t need to take lyrics so literally all the time.

Great choice, this is sure to improve on Germany’s recent placing in the contest, but I was a little disappointed with how they presented the song. There is scope for a bit more dark theatre, hopefully that is coming. They should look to Hatari if they need a few tips on how to deliver an eye popping spectacle. Main thing, great song!

I didn’t wait for the results yesterday, but seems like I was right thinking that both Lord of the Lost and Ikke will bomb with the juries (neither of them had the best live performance after all). I’m pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t Ikke who won the televote though.
Anyway – congrats to Germany! This is an awesome entry and will go high on my list!

Their performances weren’t worse than others. The fact that the German broadcaster picked jury that can’t appreciate a rock song for the life of them for a German selection boggles the mind.
