Loreen will sing “Tattoo” for Sweden at Eurovision 2023.

Eleven years after her song “Euphoria” brought Sweden its first Eurovision victory of the 21st century, Loreen is back in the competition for another shot at song contest glory. Could she do the double and secure Sweden’s seventh Eurovision crown?

Scroll down to read the “Tattoo” lyrics.

Sweden at Eurovision 2023: Loreen with “Tattoo”

Former Eurovision champion Loreen is back for another shot at the crown.

Loreen is the bookmakers favourite to win Eurovision 2023. She earned the Swedish ticket to Liverpool by winning Melodifestivalen 2023, beating out Norwegian twin superstars Marcus & Martinus and Ukrainian singer Maria Sur.

Loreen told wiwibloggs her vision is to create something new for her fans. She said: “I want you guys to feel something and I have three minutes to make you feel something. My focus is just there — what do I need to do, how can I do it, what do I want to say”.

She added: “All of these things, it’s been a process. But it’s for you. It’s for me, and it’s for you”.

What do the “Tattoo” lyrics mean?

Loreen co-wrote “Tattoo” alongside Peter Boström and Thomas G:son — the team behind her Eurovision 2012 song “Euphoria” — and Melfest songwriting veterans Jimmy “Joker” Thörnfeldt and Jimmy Jansson. Also credited is Moa Carlebecker, who competed in Melodifestivalen 2022 under her stage name Cazzi Opeia with the song “I Can’t Get Enough”.

“Tattoo” is a dark dance-pop track about holding on to love through pain. Despite proclaiming “it’s time to say goodbye”, Loreen says “this is not the end” and there will come a time when she and the subject of the song are reunited. With lyrics like “I don’t care about the pain, I’ll walk through fire and through rain”, Loreen promises she’ll do whatever it takes to get back to her love.

The “Tattoo” stage show is inspired by Loreen’s nomadic heritage. She told wiwibloggs: “I am from the mountains, so I felt like I wanted to created this nature-ly environment.” She continued: “Beautiful elements like stone and sand and sky and all these beautiful things that we sometimes forget”.

“Tattoo” lyrics — Loreen (Sweden Eurovision 2023)

Songwriters: Jimmy “Joker” Thörnfeldt, Jimmy Jansson, Loreen, Moa “Cazzi Opeia” Carlebecker, Peter Boström, Thomas G:son

I don’t wanna go
But baby we both know
This is not our time
It’s time to say goodbye

Until we meet again
‘Cause this is not the end
It will come a day
When we will find our way

Violins playing and the angels crying
When the stars align then I’ll be there

No I don’t care about them all
‘Cause all I want is to be loved
And all I care about is you
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo
No I don’t care about the pain
I’ll walk through fire and through rain
Just to get closer to you
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo

I’m letting my hair down
I’m taking it cool
You got my heart in your hand
Don’t lose it my friend
It’s all that I got

Violins playing and the angels crying
When the stars align then I’ll be there

No I don’t care about them all
‘Cause all I want is to be loved
And all I care about is you
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo
No I don’t care about the pain
I’ll walk through fire and through rain
Just to get closer to you
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo

No I don’t care about them all
‘Cause all I want is to be loved
And all I care about is you
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo
No I don’t care about the pain
I’ll walk through fire and through rain
Just to get closer to you
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo

All I care about is love
Oh oh oh
All I care about is love
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo

Its not fair to sing against Noa Kirl in your song:
Noa Kirl ’bout them all
all I need is to be loved
and Noa Kirl bout is you
your stuck on me like a tattoo

Once again, the song is good, but not great. I love Loreen but frankly, the song misses an extra something. She’s already an icon, so there is no hate in saying that at all.

In a year of so many bad mediocre songs… Loreen stands out! If it was any other year, Loreen wouldn’t stand out as much as she does this year. We need to face reality and understand that while Loreens song is not ground breaking and it is a little generic, if you look around and see the competition, there is no competition.

Every year people get blind with their predictions only to be dissapointed in the end because they overhype it to oblivion without seeing the bigger picture. I want to listen to the song very critically because it was too overhyped and after listening, I was disappointed :/ I do care about the song, unlike Sweden’s fans who doesnt care about the songs if it was from Sweden.

Yeah, heard it a few times now, and I still don’t get it… I sort of like it when I’m listening it, but just as the song gets going, the beat “stalls” oddly (don’t know how to better describe it). When it ends, I forget it almost instantly.

I liked the song and performance but actually after a while, I felt that the lyrics are just simple; the chorus doesnt have impressive effect. After then, I realized that it is not a song transcends its meaning.
Any other opinions are welcomed; I liked Loreen’s other songs but I will prefer voting for another song.

Good performance, song itself is nothing but boring with linear, monotonous chorus. Credit for the staging and lightning effects but only that part is good.
I think we are all free to express opinion without disrespecting and “Tattoo” is not a song that I would enjoy listening and want the ESC win.

Tbh I never imagined that Loreen would be so popular among her fanbase (as some claimed, accept whatever she gives), nor so hated among her hater-base. Lyrics-wise, there are actually many different interpretations. Jonkonfui regards it as a 419, while I also saw some understood it as a talk towards her fans (with the implications of her former failure in Mello 2017.) With her staging and performance in mind, I am still leaning to read it as a goddess creating the world and her oracle on meeting again. Either way, it is quite open. Maybe because I did not realise… Read more »

Some comments who are just gushing over Loreen’s this bland, nothing special song just because it is Loreen’s song. Loreen has already great musical career but the song doesnt appeal to me; Just similar version of Euopharia; bringing nothing special.
When some countries bring generic songs with simple lyrics; everyone has an opinion with critical eye but when it comes to Sweden and Loreen; everyone says “?t is okay; songs are not important”. That’s Double standard 🙁

Some of you simply post the same post multiple times, this song really winds you up! Calm down, it’s a song! A song among others. You might not like it but you are also not the ones voting for it, either in Mello or in ESC! You do not represent the wider ESC audience.. So the lyrics are bland, so what? It is not a lyrics contest. Besides, it is not the only song with bad lyrics this year, have you read the Norwegian? Or Finnish? Croatian? And as for Loreen being heavily promoted, LOL,she is not. The lyrics are bland and cheesy indeed but she compensates with the performance. She does get the emotion across, that of a person desperate for love. That’s why people don’t mind the uninspired lyrics. On the contrary, the georgian entry for example has powerful music and vocals, but the lyrics are just a vomit of words

I liked the performance, not the song itself which is quite simple with its average lyrics; chorus and melody. What I remember after listening and watching was simply some lightning and foggy effects; a singer singing an average song :/

I always feel like I’d like Loreens songs more if they weren’t so hyped by the fans. They’re always in tha place as if I like them well enough but at same time find myself looking sideways at the people are just hoping it too much.

The song is just average; with its simple chorus and nothing special lyrics. I would be objective and for my Perspective, Loreen is not like “first among equals”; due to her popularity as former ESC winner and overhyping a singer is also unfair for other participating singers.

A crucial factor that makes a song good is the singer. So yes, I like “Tattoo” and a big factor is Loreen because she elevates it whereas someone else couldn’t maybe do it. The same thing happens with the rest of the songs. Fans wouldn’t like “Queen of the Kings” the same if it was performed from someone else and not Alessandra. Is “Queen of the Kings” an original song? No. So don’t criticize what you are already doing with other entries. P.s “Queen of the kings” is just one example. The same thing happens with any ESC song, at… Read more »

It’s a good song, but I feel like it’s really missing that last bit that makes it a REALLY good song. Hold Me Closer had something unique; you can always listen it whichever mood you have. But Tattoo; Just a visually expensive and good performance :/

Benjamin

My view on“Tattoo” is that it is pretty bleak and dated, trying to make an updated version of a song which was out 11 years ago using mostly same instruments is not an idea which I find appealing. I also found the lyrics simple and average.

Loreen’s song is just a good visual performance; not a classy song and I also want another country win or be in top 3. I think Euoppharia could win without staging but Without that expensive visual effects; “Tattoo” is just okay song.

I’ve listened to the studio version without looking at the performance and then watched the performance. Quite simple to be honest, while live the “Violins playing and angels crying” lyric sounds very… simple and a bit average.

I believe most of the hype comes from the stage performance. I am sure if Loreen sang “Voices” for instance (Sweden’s entry in 2021); Fans would have still overhyped it, saying “what a great song” :/

It is really odd to call the fans who didn’t like Loreen’s “Tattoo” song as haters. We don’t have to like every song sang by previous ESc winner. Disliking a song doesnt mean that we never liked any song from that singer.

It’s a nice enough song. … Probably, if you like that kind of music, … but it’s not growing me; especially the chorus. The performance was good but you know, it’s a matter of financing that visual effects, Led screens etc. Simple, a bit generic and gloomy song.

I wonder how people went from loving Loreen to hating what she does and hating all the people that are rooting for her. Seriously, get a life. While the song is not groundbreaking, it’s not bland. Sure the staging is making it stronger but it’s an audiovisual show! The lyrics aren’t too exciting, but I think Loreen knows that herself.

Using simple lyrics is a great way to connect with non-English speakers around Europe. Non-English speakers can translate the lyrics easier and even sing along too. The lyrics for Euphoria and even Statements were pretty basic too, it’s purposely done in my opinion.

Swedish songwriters are known for writing lyrics based on how the words sound rather than what they mean. Just as long the lyrics are ‘good enough’.
In this case I do not think the lyrics should be interpreted in isolation. The text really derives meaning from the performance and Loreen’s artistry.

Tattoo was featured in Billboard “10 Cool New Pop Songs to Get You Through the Week”
“Swedish pop star and former Eurovision winner Loreen is back with a dramatic, nitro-fueled anthem that hopefully previews her first proper project since 2017’s Ride. “Tattoo” represents the cinematic, string-supported dance-pop sound that has historically struggled to connect with American audiences but tops charts overseas; hopefully, U.S. listeners will make an exception, and embrace a song as epic as “Tattoo.” – J. Alessandra has her lyrics post back in mid-February. Käärijä though does not have his lyric post (yet!), he has no less exposure for his popularity among fans. He also has many more discussions on wiwi’s official youtube channel.
