After months of speculation, the beans have been spilled. Say hello to the UK Eurovision 2023 entry. Mae Muller will fly the British flag on home soil in Liverpool with her empowering pop anthem “I Wrote A Song”.

On Thursday morning, Zoe Ball and Rylan formally unveiled Mae as the UK Eurovision entry on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast show.

Last night, The Sun leaked BBC producers had hand-picked Mae Muller to sing for the UK at Eurovision this May.

Mae Muller — “I Wrote A Song” (UK Eurovision 2023)

Mae first appeared on Eurovision detectives’ radars after posting a TikTok at BBC Maida Vale studios, where she recorded a session with BBC Radio One. Last year, Sam Ryder also recorded a session at the studio prior to his reveal as the UK Eurovision act.

Other rumoured names included Birdy, Freya Ridings and Rina Sawayama. But in the end, the BBC awarded the coveted Eurovision ticket to Mae Muller.

Mae co-wrote “I Wrote A Song” alongside Brit-nominated songwriter Lewis Thompson and Karen Poole. The 25-year-old Londoner describes the song as a summertime empowering pop anthem about resilience and sisterhood.

On TikTok, Mae wrote: “This song is for the girlies that went through heartache, hurt or pain and came out of the other side, who persevered and came out stronger, who took the high road and chose to love themselves.

“Crying at home? Absolutely not. Spend the night at home? It’s a no from me. […] It’s giving growth. It’s giving empowerment. It’s giving liberation”.

Mae told BBC Radio 2: “This is such a level up from anything I’ve ever done”.

Mae Muller will sing “I Wrote A Song” in the Eurovision 2023 grand final on Saturday 13 May.

Who is Mae Muller?

Mae Muller is a 25-year-old singer-songwriter from London. Her signature feel-good pop sound is inspired by the likes of Gwen Stefani, The Chicks and Lily Allen.

In 2022, Mae released empowerment anthem “I Just Came To Dance”, which has amassed more than 2.5 million Spotify streams to date. This year, she teamed up with Sigala, Caity Baser and Stefflon Don on summertime pop banger “Feels So Good”.

What do you think of “I Wrote A Song”? How will the United Kingdom perform at Eurovision?

I think the goal was not to host two years in a row while still showing that Britain is now taking ESC seriously long-term and can be a contender at the highest level. I think this song does that and will end lower half of the Top 10. They’d have probably won if they’d have gone with Birdy.

That’s what I figured too, but I am glad that the UK is still putting out a quality track to not completely phone it in or throw it.

ok. in 24 hours, after hearing it on the radio a few times, I’ve gone from feeling mortified about the song choice and moved to a slightly more positive perspective. I still hate the lyrics of the song, it’s all a bit childish in a Jendrik style, but that instrumental is a bop and the melody is infectious and memorable. I’m more excited about the fact she was the girl in the Mika video for the actual song Grace Kelly than the actual song. I still have reservations if this will work live. From what I have seen on YT,… Read more »

Are we having a dancing-singing show at ESC?

Not the way I was expected for the UK to keep their momentum after Sam Ryder success but why not maybe it’s a strategy that will work. The song is enjoyable, catchy, modern, the lyrics are funny, and it will be performed very well knowing the background of Mae. Now it lacks a bit of impact though, there’s no real climax in the song, the talking bridge is nice but maybe too simple just before the last chorus that lacks a bit of power too. But overall I really like it, it could do very well and be top 10… Read more »

Because I have nothing else to do and out of curiosity, I went back a year and there was a lot of negative comments under both the rumour and confirmation posts about Sam. ‘Bland, boring, bottom 5 etc.’

And then they ate their hats in May. 🙂

Exactly! What fans think before the contest might not be the best indication what actually happens in ESC. Looking at the polls before the national finals also show that the taste of the fans might not be the same as the public in general or the juries. Not to mention the OGAE-votings! I think UK will do quite well this year and think it will collect alot of votes from both the public and juries. And then we’ll see if we have another Spaceman-moment 🙂

Kinda late to the party, but I think this is a song that is effective about what it is trying to do. Sounds like something that could chart well in the UK, it’s cohesive and the lyrics tell a clear story (Eurovision bops can have coherent lyrics too!). I believe it could be a little edgier with the chorus and the bridge though. Let’s see how Mae will sell it.

following the success of Freya Skye at Junior Eurovision 2022, seems like the BBC wants to do something similar for the grown-up contest in 2023. and bam, they do it very well once again. this is pretty much as in line with other chart-topping releases by big-named UK artists you can remember (but whom I can remember so far are Anne-Marie, Dua Lipa, Little Mix and Mabel). and also the song title makes me wonder if she and the songwriters were inspired by Alexander Rybak’s Eurovision 2018 song.

Thank you! I am Spanish so I am happy to hear your opinion 🙂 I preferred Sam Ryder, but this is a nice enjoyable pop song (which is actually not easy to get) and I am sure it will be a great show live (she’s got a top choreographer and dancers – one of them is one of Chanel’s dancers actually). As per France, I never liked Fulenn, I think they did not have enough charisma, and La Zarra has LOTS of that. Plus, I enjoy the song as well. When I first saw the title, I thought it was going to be a summer ballad, but I was surprised that it was a F you cheater bop. As host entries go, this isn’t too bad. It is certainly a better song for the UK, than the last several songs other than spaceman. I don’t know or expect this to actually win Eurovision for the UK, but I hope it gets a respectable result.

I was expecting some kind of simpering ballad, but Mae has delivered a fierce and sassy revenge themed bop, that is almost painfully catchy. It is really quite fabulous and sassy, and the best UK song in years. Plus the video is awesome. Top marks for Mae!

What a cheap song. A dive from Sam Ryder. I have just come to a realisation that there is no interest from Eurovision (EBU/countries???) to evolve into a high quality music competition that really offer good and solid (lasting) songs, but just pop and cheap songs in English, where Sweden wants to stand out! It is called fast food music!

On first listen this morning I was disappointed (because it wasn’t Frankenstein), but taking Rina Sawayama out of the equation, this is one of the best U.K. songs in the last 20 years. It was in my head all day after one listen. Will it win, I don’t think so, could it be top 10 – if the performance and staging is strong, i think yes.

I really like this. It has these Iberian notes that almost sort of go into a Carribbean feel to it.
Is it a bit simple, Yes. However, that in my view is a strength here, it is simple but it has a solid production, after a 2 or 3 listens it makes sense and you really start to bop along to it, is it a winner, no as I do fervently believe that Finland is going to do it this year with Kaarija. But, is it Top 5 or at least Top 10 material absolutely.

It’s a good’un. It took me a while to warm up to Space Man, and this had me hooked from the start. It will all depend on how she performs it live, and the promo-ing that has to be done (Sam did a great job and assume that the management team will take the same approach)

this is actually a fun song and there’s a lack of just genuine pop at this year’s contest so this could stand out…it does always seem to stay at the same level–I wish there was more undulation or the last third had a bit of a break or found a new gear…still this is fun–and if TaP figured out how to stage for Sam last year, then they should have some fun with this…and, yes, agree with those that think it’s better than Unicorn

On my third listen now, this is actually a huge banger of a pop song, can already hear the crowd started to clap to the beat when it starts at the final. I really hope Mae isn’t getting to much trolling, a lot of us had of hopes fueled by media coverage, and Mae stating she’s known for months, put the anger towards the BBC for fuelling unhelpful speculation, not Mae. We can be proud of this song, we definitely haven’t returned to the dark days. And trying not to waffle in, but thinking about it, we probably don’t want… Read more »
