She stormed to victory in the Melodifestivalen 2023 final. Now, almost one week after Sweden’s national selection came to a close, we know exactly how many votes were cast for Loreen and “Tattoo”… and, it was a lot!

We already knew that the Eurovision 2012 winner was a favourite with seven of the eight juries, with Croatia being the exception and ranking her third. And it was a similar case with the voting public. Of the eight voting groups, seven gave 12 points to “Tattoo”. Only the youngest voters, those aged three to nine, were left unimpressed. Instead, they gave their top marks to Theoz and “Mer av dig”. In fact, they only reserved a measly one point for Loreen.
And while this slight from the youngsters meant that she didn’t quite match Tusse’s 2021 record of 96 televoting points under the current age group system, she easily took the record for the most votes received. Across both app and televoting, she scooped up a massive 3,783,148 votes. The previous record vote-getter was Ander Bagge in 2022, who received 3,464,137 votes for “Bigger Than The Universe”.

Her afterparty performance was awful to witness, yelling at the soundmixer girl, throwing water at her and then demanding apollogy from her because the music wasn’t loud enough? Disgusting woman.

Paul Rey’s songs have always been undervoted by the Swedish audience, I wonder why. His music is awesome and his entries are usually really good. He definitely did not deserve 1 point in the final.
He doesn’t really have the charisma on stage, although he is a good singer

Why would they fix it when it’s been working for times and times? Because it’s too hard for you to swallow? Or because you have a hard time understanding it? What you need to understand is that Melfest is not only a competition for Sweden to pick its entry at the Eurovision Song Contest but also a cult, a tradition, and one of the biggest events in the country. He is very popular with the young people. He also won the Swedish Idols before that. Loreen is not really known to that age group and her sing is not that pop
Age groups is such a strange concept, imagine ESC introducing it. Or Oscars jury dividing voters after age..
It also means “Heroes” will remain the song with most points in Mello ever, since the system do not allow that. It also means the song with most votes may not be the actual winner or that we will never get a runaway winner…
I get the concept behind since it creates more excitement but I kind off miss the okd ways..

One small reason is that voting takes time. Diligent voters who want to score all entries 1-5 can easily run out of time. That’s what happened to me at least. Only got to song 9 in the second round. Voting has become such a chore. So the only viable voting strategy is to give 5 hearts to your favorites, and nothing to the rest. And few people give Royals 5 hearts. I find it hilarious how toddlers prevented Loreen from getting a perfect televise score.
Theoz had a cute little song but nothing more. It was pretty childish so it makes sense that he got votes from this age group. Is it too young of an age to vote in Melfest? Perhaps so.
Age groups is such a weird concept. Imagine if ESC had them. Or the Oscars votes were divided into age groups?

Even though I do not agree with the taste of 3-9 year olds (I do love Mer av dig tho), they are aware of the songs. I was exposed to early melfest hits when I was in preschool from 2002-2007 ish. Our teachers used to put those songs up for us to jump around to and causally just sing along. I even remember me being obsessed with “Håll om mig” when I was 5! Are you really telling me that they have a group of children watching this and rating the songs? How do they do this? I find the whole idea very stupid. I could understand dividing the “voters” into larger segments according to their age but children from 3 (3, really?) to 9???.. what is the point?
I can tell you’re an ignorant person by the fact you have no idea how tech savvy 3-4 year olds are. Not only do they have family members modeling the activity, but kids have likes and dislikes at that age, they can distinguish between photos, they can count to 12, they can press buttons…it’s not that hard to vote on an app.
Parents who give 3 – 9 year olds a phone are bad parents.

Wiwi is just playing it safe, rooting for what they assume is the winner and then afterwards be called ‘the expert’. (Not saying Loreen will not win). Remember them giving The Common Linnets a really bad ‘Wiwi Jury score’, then afterwards defending themselves? Just own the fact you were all wrong 😉

I would’ve enjoyed Melfest a lot more if it wasn’t set up to be broad family entertainment. But it is what it is, I guess.
I guess because it’s a family thing explains, why the chosen acts are mostly rather harmless and middle of the road imho. Same for Norway.
It would be nice if they mandated increased diversity among the songwriters– they could do that without affecting the concept, I think. I enjoyed MGP much more despite the similarities, and I think that might be why.
A lot of people seem to either forget this, or have great difficulty accepting it. Melodifestivalen has a mission from SVT which encompasses much more than Eurovision.
But it is. Mello is not just about Eurovision or a selection show the way MGP is. It is a festival of songs. The final is the selection show but the overall mission is to be musical entertainment and as such must be broad to satisfy everyone from toddlers to grandmas
Sweden wants a song that is represented for ALL demographics.

The 3-9 yo placing Smash Into Pieces at the 3rd place. It looks like the parents influenced or voted instead of them :’) That’s why I think it’s a bit stupid to allow the votes from such a young audience (well, one of the reasons).
My 8 year old son and a friend of his both had smash into pieces as their nr 1. So… I don’t think them beeing nr 3 with the youngest is so strange.
I think though if I were a kid I would still like Smash. They have good visuals with that drummer’s mask and the song was good.

I feel your surprise, but he’s quite popular here. In a place where the average voting age from a televiewer is >50y/o I can see why is so popular, despite being pretty mediocre.

Well, it’s the youngest generation. It’s ridiculous to expect them born in 2010’s to have the same music taste as someone who was born in 1990’s.
I was thinking about that. These are kids that the oldest ones (9 years old) where born in 2014, 2 years after Loreen had won. Of course they could have seen Loreen performance, and they probably know who she is, but they cannot have even the slightest memory of her during her win. They cannot even have memories of Mans Zelmerlow’s win in 2015!
Quick fun fact(s). Under the older melo ‘voting system’ (which does not account for age breakdown but rather the total number of votes each act receives), Rejhan would have gone to the semi final instead of Elov & Beny, Wiktoria instead of Tennessee Tears, and Axel Schylstrom instead of Mariette. I wonder if this means we might have seen Axel in the finals…
Axel was in the finals anyways being a co-writer for Mer Av Deg.
Not sure why Wiktoria didn’t get very far. It was one of few memorable songs for me. Reminds me of Omar before. They were BOTH some of the first songs to be revealed in the selection live and they didn’t get through despite putting the bar high.
Based on the discrepancy between the overall amount of votes she received versus the lower score from the 3-9 year olds, I get the impression that that age bracket aren’t very numerous in voting (which probably isn’t a surprise considering they are… 3 to 9 year olds after all, haha). Interesting numbers nevertheless!
3 to 9? Very bad idea. Next year they’ll raise the lowest age category to include everything up to middle-school (14-year-olds).
3 to 9yo? Which five-year-old kid is invested in music at that level? My first clear memory of liking a specifical artist was NEK and the Spanish version of Laura non c’e, and I was like eleven.
I heard that the other day, it’s a great song. Poor NEK never got his Eurovision chance as Italy were out of the contest in his heydey.
As someone who got into Italian music during the hiatus and before getting into Eurovision, I do really wonder sometimes how Laura, NEK, Tiziano and others would have done in the contest.
My first Eurovision was as an 8 year old, and I still remember every single song from my second at 9 years old, don’t doubt the kids ^^
