Israel’s Netta was the last solo female performer to win the Eurovision Song Contest — and that was back in 2018. Will 2023 belong to the guys yet again?

As we look to the 37 songs competing at Eurovision 2023, we’re assessing the variety of acts, styles, genres and performers. So pray tell us: Who do you think is the best male solo act in this year’s competition?

We have four male solo acts in semi-final 1, five male solos in semi-final 2 plus one more automatic qualifier in the grand final. Are you breaking my broken heart with Andrew Lambrou or Reiley, do you have due vite like Marco Mengoni or did someone shoot a hole in that heart with Remo Forrer’s watergun?

Who is your favourite male solo act at Eurovision 2023?

You have ten choices. Let us know who your favourites are by voting below. You can vote for as many acts as you want, but remember to choose wisely because you can only submit your votes once!

Listen to the male solo acts of Eurovision 2023

Gustaph – “Because of You” (Belgium)

Andrew Lambrou – “Break a Broken Heart” (Cyprus)

Reiley – “Breaking My Heart” (Denmark)

Käärijä – “Cha Cha Cha” (Finland)

Victor Vernicos – “What They Say” (Greece)

Pasha Parfeni – “Soarele și luna” (Moldova)

Theodor Andrei – “D. G. T. (Off and On)” (Romania)

Luke Black – “Samo mi se spava” (Serbia)

Remo Forrer – “Watergun” (Switzerland)

Marco Mengoni – “Due vite” (Italy)

Who are your favourites? Which of the semi-finalists do you want to see in the grand final? Let us know in the comments below.

This poll is kinda useless…

We’ve got the hotties (Cyprus, Italy, Moldova and Serbia) and the teens (Greece, Switzerland, Denmark and Romania). And then we got the turn offs (Belgium, Finland).

I can see the hype for Finland’s song, but about the singer, he’s anything but hot. I doubt anyone here would date him, I mean, let’s just be honest!

Switzerland and Denmark are not teens. Maybe their target audiences are, though. Also, Finland is definitely not a ”turn off”.

I have been commenting on Wiwi for 10 years now, so I realise that we have done these category polls many times before without that much debate (except in 2014). However, right now, defining gender is highly topical in some countries. If I were cynical, I might assume that a category of “male solo act” was deliberately used here in order to ignite a debate about sex and gender in the comments. This blog is about Eurovision, where such categories have no bearing on the contest whatsoever. It’s not as if the competitors are training for Athletics where the sex… Read more »

Just like it is important for people who identify differently to be identified differently

It is important for men who are gay to be identified as men. Sometimes the world doesn’t treat them equally as straight men. So it is important that such polls reinforce that they are men.

I think the wiwibloggs editors have enough sensibility that they wouldn’t put performers who identity as non-binary or fluid in these polls. Inclusion is more important though in my opinion.

I was reading about the BRIT Awards recently. They abolished “Best British Female” and “Best British Male” last year, and joined them as one “Best British Artist” award. This year all five of the nominated artists were men.

I’m not sure if this tells us anything, or shows the importance of gender quotas… but maybe.

I know nowadays everything seems to be about cotton Candy and unicorns, I know your heart IS in the right place when writing this but I think you are leaning a bit towards drama. I am gay and a man and thinking that a Wiwibloggs poll about best male singer reinforces my masculinity is a little bit WTF.

Where would Sam Smith fit in? It’s important to recognize men as men, women as women… but also the rest that don’t fit into either box. Maybe a fourth poll is necessary. Favourite non-binary. Okay, so there might be limited options, or none, but at least it will show all the non-binary voters out there that they matter too. A poll with zero names would definitely make some of sort of point to ponder.

Hi Purple Mask, I am curious to know, since you have been following these polls for 10 years now, can you recall if the “who should win Eurovision” poll has managed to guess the eventual winner correctly more or less times? I have been following for a long time too, but I can’t remember the results of past polls… but would be curious to know. In any case, the Wiwi poll seems to have a different winner than one other Eurovision poll on the internet that I’m following. Also, one particular app has a different winner. It is interesting because… Read more »

That’s a good question. As Simon mentioned, the polls on Wiwi have always been for fun, so if they have ever been accurate then it was coincidence. Sometimes it has been broadly accurate, if that makes sense.

Jonas, it’s like you’re plugged into my subconscious. “Woke” sounds to me like “awakened”, which is exactly how I feel when looking at why we do things. I know it’s not used as a compliment here, but it is apt in describing the feeling. On a separate note: I don’t understand why a “woke” way of thinking upsets some people. Perhaps you could explain that to me?

I don’t think I can, sadly. It seems to be a word that has been distorted from its original meaning. It’s beyond my comprehension why anybody would ever have a problem with the idea of social conscience.

Why everything has to be so complicated? Why do people might be offended for the most harmless and unimportant things?

My top 3 if I base my judgment on the song:
1 – Käärijä
2 – Andrew Lambrou
3 – Luke Black

If I have to base it on the quality of the singer then my favorite certaibly is Switzerland because Remo has a really powerful voice.

I really like Cyprus with a beautiful romantic rock song, Denmark with a modern proposal exactly in the style that teenagers currently like, Moldova which is doing “Fulenn” again but better (I can say it, I’m French), but here I vote for Italy: beautiful text, beautiful music, beautiful voice and more beautiful face, the Marco has everything, you can’t fight.

You should have your French citizenship revoked if you honestly believe Moldova’s low budget version is anywhere near the great Fulenn.

With all the affection I have for Alvan & Aez (I love them, really), Moldova is very brave (or unconscious) to propose something in the same spirit as “Fulenn”, when we got caught with one of our worst rankings.
And it’s very sad because France won’t send another song in Breton to Eurovision for years to come, whereas I’ve also been saying for years that if we had the intelligence to send Cécile Corbel, she would take the cup home.

I don’t know if you’re serious but anyway. The title is not wrong as it says “male singer” 🙂 “Male” refers to the sex of a person, it’s a biological descriptor so nothing to do with the gender or how a person feels.
