Nine artists competing at Eurovision 2024 have signed a public letter calling for an “immediate and lasting ceasefire” in Gaza. The signatories are:

  • Ireland’s Bambie Thug
  • Norway’s Gåte
  • Portugal’s Iolanda
  • San Marino’s Megara
  • Switzerland’s Nemo
  • The U.K.’s Olly Alexander
  • Denmark’s Saba
  • Lithuania’s Silvester Belt
  • Finland’s Windows95Man

Their letter, which was uploaded to Instagram, among other places, is reprinted in full below.

“We want to begin by acknowledging the privilege of taking part in Eurovision.

In light of the current situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and particularly in Gaza, and in Israel, we do not feel comfortable being silent.

It is important to us to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and communicate our heartfelt wish for peace, an immediate and lasting ceasefire, and the safe return of all hostages. We stand united against all forms of hate, including antisemitism and islamophobia.

We firmly believe in the unifying power of music, enabling people to transcend differences and foster meaningful conversations and connections.

We feel that it is our duty to create and uphold this space, with a strong hope that it will inspire greater compassion and empathy.”

Olly Alexander among the Eurovision 2024 artists who sign letter calling for Gaza ceasefire

The letter from Eurovision 2024 artists comes a day after the Queers for Palestine group called for the U.K.’s Olly Alexander to withdraw from the competition over Israel’s participation. They posted an open letter, which was signed by 450 queer artists, individuals and organisations.

“We share the vision of queer joy and abundance you’ve offered through your music, and share your belief in collective liberation for all,” it read. “In this spirit, we ask you to heed the Palestinian call to withdraw from Eurovision …There can be no party with a state committing apartheid and genocide. At a time when accountability is so urgently needed, Israel’s inclusion in Eurovision would enable and cover up its war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The letter from the Eurovision 2024 artists has divided opinion and elicited strong feelings on all sides of the issue.

Amit Harari, an Israeli news anchor, replied:

“You forgot 1,400 people murdered, raped and burnt in their beds, at a music festival and at their bases on a holiday Saturday morning by terrorists without any previous aggression.”

“You forgot many details. You’re welcome to stay in your comfortable London home and leave your nose out of things you don’t know much about. Dizzy is a great song, by the way. Focus on that.”

Meanwhile, the musician OGGIE applauded Olly’s decision to remain in the competition, writing:

“I’m happy to see that you haven’t allowed the public to make up your mind for you. Being open about where you stand and still representing the U.K. is more powerful of a statement than disappearing, looking forward to you living your dreams.”

On Friday, two hours after sharing the Eurovision 2024 letter co-signed by eight other Eurovision acts, Olly posted another Instagram letter, directly addressing the Queers for Palestine letter. He said he sent the following response to them directly, but wanted to share it in full with the public alongside the collective artist statement.

“I wholeheartedly support action being taken to demand an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the return of all hostages and the safety and security of all civilians in Palestine and Israel.

I know some people will choose to boycott this year’s Eurovision and I understand and respect their decision.

As a participant I’ve taken a lot of time to deliberate over what to do and the options available to me. It is my current belief that removing myself from the contest wouldn’t bring us any closer to our shared goal.
Instead, I’ve been speaking with some of the other EV contestants and we’ve decided that by taking part we can use our platform to come together and call for peace.

I hope and pray that our calls are answered and there is an end to the atrocities we are seeing taking place in Gaza.

I’d like to thank the many signatories of this letter whose work I deeply admire and respect and hope that we can continue to work together in creating a better world for all of us.”

They suffer! They don’t deserves this! Outside Israel pictures of them are being spat at, pulled off, burnt, thrown in the bin by people who *should* know better. SHAME ON YOU!

To those who say Israel would be destroyed if they didn’t eliminate Hmas (Roy), I see your country launched an air strike on the consulate of Iran in Syria today. A violation of TWO sovereign jurisdictions. If it was an Israeli consulate/embassy that was destroyed in an air strike it would have been called a terror1st attack and Israel would have had to respond just like 7/10. However it’s okay because it was Iran and Syria yeah? THIS IS WHY ISRAEL IS ATTACKED and why the likes of you, Roy, don’t feel safe there. Tell your government to stop picking… Read more »

Israel was attacked in October 2023. What are you talking about?

Regardless of what you said, something simple: one cannot just go about and tell a sovereign country what to do and how to defend themselves. It’s that basic. Simple. Fundamental. Core.

Darren
Darren

7/10 was a terror attack, but do to us airstriking the consulate of a country in another.
As I said, if it was an Israeli embassy destroyed today it would have been called a terror attack
“ one cannot just go about and tell a sovereign country what to do and how to defend themselves”. Tell that to Israel they seem to like doing it.
Hopefully Iran and Syria don’t respond now, though I guess it would be their fault if they did.

If you’re done with me and this article, you don’t need to say do. Talk about dramatic. This isn’t an airport, departures don’t need to be announced.

In addition, I haven’t justified 7/10 as you can clearly see in my previous comments but make up your own mind, you clearly see what you want. I don’t support terror of any kind, especially state sanctioned terror.

Best of luck.

But from the opinions of others here, it seems it’s okay as long as it’s not their group that gets it.

It should be called out whenever it happens, wherever it happens and by whoever does it.

Auschwitz, Bucha, Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Sarajevo, Srebrenica, Mariupol, G@z@, WB it must be called out. Always. Or else it sets a sorry precedent.

Unlike the Irish, Spanish and Italian and English and German and Lebanese and Norwegian and Japanese and Chinese folk etc who’ve left their own countries to go to the Americas for example, historically speaking, Jews have actually returned to their ancestral land. Go back to the spin-offs of Judaism and core European and ME history and you’ve got it on a platter. You don’t even have to think too much. It’s all there. The Irish experience was due to persecution actually.

Not to mention the genoc1de that was the famine. But after independence, those who were of settler ancestry fled persecution.
There was also penal laws introduced on the island during occupation by which catholics couldn’t practice their religion, couldn’t speak Irish etc.
during the struggle for independence, the British forces (Black and Tans) burned down whole towns and cities (Cork) as collective punishment.

So not just Jews as you say.

I was talking about the context of the world wars specifically in regard to the Jewish population and the atrocities of the wars where *various* countries, *collectively* persecuted and punished them.

Nevertheless, the plight of the Irish was serious and so was that of the Ukrainian (famine as well) in their times and they are shameful in the European history and something to be acknowledged.

Why is it so wrong to sing for peace? I thought we learned this lesson from John Lennon.
Imagine: Eden Golan singing together with a Palestinian artist.
Imagine: Ukraine’s artists singing alongside a Russian band.
Imagine: Armenia and Azerbaijan’s performing a mash-up together.
Tell me I’m out of touch, idealistic and weak, and then watch me as I stand on stage with a piano nearby and shout into a megaphone: “We must sing for peace, now, before it is too late.”

That’s the problem right there – you guys think Israel is fighting the Palestinians as a whole.

I won’t talk about the other countries mentioned because I’m sure I don’t know the full picture. Something people around the world should do as well – stay out of topics they don’t know much about.

Hey! Yes, quick history lesson – not all Jews came from Poland and Russia honey 🙂
Besides those who already lived here before 1948, Jews came here from Europe – because of antisemitism and world war 2, some (like my family) came from different Arab/Muslim countries, from Africa and Asia, because of antisemitism of course, some from countries southern to those in Africa, such as Ethiopia, Eritrea, and from many other nations.

Never said anything against Islamophobia. Hate is hate and we should all condemn it.
The difference is that antisemitism literally leads to the killing of many Jews and Israelis (even non Jews) while islamophobia, at the moment, not as much.
Life is not all about proportions, it’s not symetrical. Jews are more hated then Muslims and more Jews are being damaged by it.

The time to withdraw from the contest in protest over Israel was earlier this year, before any entries were chosen. Unfortunately, the broadcasters all had no balls and pushed the responsibility of deciding to go to Eurovision on the chosen artist. They’re now being picked on by various groups to withdraw, but why should they? Why should they miss out on the chance of international exposure because the EBU and the broadcasters were toothless? Hooray hooray. I am so pleased to see this statement! All my respect for Olly, Saba, Silvester, Windows95Man, Nemo, Megara, Bambie, Iolanda and our amazing Gåte ! Coming together and sharing statements like this is more effectful than just withdrawing from the contest! Use the platform to speak out…pulling out only makes a small headline in their own respective countries, but coming together to release statements will make headlines everywhere! I am shocked not to see Hera Björks name here though… she probably just dont care at all now and wants nothing to do with politics… the absence of M&M… Read more »

If this conflict carries on beyond May and it escalates further , I still don’t see Israel taking part . Especially with their further intentions and actions not in line with the UN . A lot of sanctions will take place . Artists are not going to stand in silence , and they didn’t use the countries name in their letter. We hope for peace. It’s a democratic right to agree or to disagree.

They left out Israel when they call for a ceasefire.
They only call for a ceasefire in G.za.
They don’t call for a ceasefire in Israel, a EBU country that is attacked in several fronts, even before October.
That makes this statement political.

We’ve had attacks coming towards us from G@za obviously, Lebanon, a bit from Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
The only difference is that we learned how to defend ourselves and invested in air defence systems.
Next time we’ll make sure we die so people can ba calm and have a proportionate war.

So happy that these 9 artists have used their platform as Eurovision artists to give this clear message of immediate ceasefire, and for Belgian Mustii also signing it. This is the only right thing to do! I’m sincerely afraid that Israels participation this year may ruin the competition we love. I’m afraid many nations will seriously think over if it’s worth taking part next year when they see that a country that behaves like Israel does now can join the party as of nothing had happened. Bruh, we all want peace, but they forgot who broke it on October 7th. Things might not have been perfect at all, but at least there wasn’t a big war at the time, until Hmas initiated an attack. They want ceasefire? So do all of us. But we want our hostages back and we want to make sure we’re safe. If they can’t tell us how to achieve that, better for them to shut up. It’s easy to say they want a ceasefire, but then what? They didn’t even take the time to condemn the October 7th attack – the… Read more »

I’m fed up with Israelis saying the same thing about 7/10. Horrific horrible event that should be condemned rightfully. However this didn’t just happen over night. This has been happening for decades and yes, people are waking up now, about time. 7/10 wouldn’t have happened if Israel didn’t have G@z@ blockaded since the 2000s, didn’t have the WB under occupation, weren’t establishing illegal settlements on Palestinian lands. If Israel stopped its expansionist agenda and stopped violating the lives of Palestinians and the territories of neighbouring sovereign states, interning hundreds of Palestinians for years without trial etc et. Etc 7/10 wouldn’t… Read more »

“7/10 wouldn’t have happened if Israel didn’t have G@z@ blockaded since the 2000s” Israel’s blockade is not an excuse for the extreme violence that was committed on 7.10. Shameful. Israel has blockaded G@z@ because it’s run by a terrorist organisation that preaches death to Jews and the destruction of Israel and that has continually rained rockets onto innocent civilians for years. How on earth can Israel and Palestine live in peace when Israel has as a neighbour a terrorist organisation on its border committed to its destruction? What other country would suffer rocket attacks for years and let that neighbour… Read more »

The Israeli blockade isn’t an excuse for 7/10 but Israel’s actions towards the Palestinians will breed groups like H@m@as. If the Palestinians were left alone, there would be no need for the group. Like you missed basically everything in my comment there and just saw one line you could use to reply. But they were left alone. Israel gave G@za back in 2005 and they held free elections, which Hmas won. Because of the terr0r attacks, the blockade started. No one asks Egypt to let the people move freely, only Israel. Did you know that many Palestinians entered Israel from G@za to work here? People from the strip, children included, are entering Israel to get medical treatment. Israel has done way and beyond enough to help those people even after leaving the G@za strip, while the terr0rism never stopped. It’s time you guys truly condemn their actions and put the pressure on… Read more »

They weren’t left alone though were they? The people of WB, Lebanon and Syria aren’t left alone either. Last two are sovereign nations too by the way that Israel flagrantly violates launching air strikes into population centers such as Beirut or Damascus. Killing scores of people just to get like 1 guy on the Mossad list. If either of them countries done that to Israel they would be almost wiped out in response. Completely off topic, maybe inappropriately so, but…

U.K. residents, ABBA are giving away an all-expenses paid trip to the contest in May for four people. All you have to do to be in with a chance is join their “Voyage Hub”, which is free, and answer a simple question.

I am not a U.K. resident, so I have no skin in the game… but what excites me is that ABBA now owe the EBU a favour which means I have high hopes for this year’s interval!
