Ahead of first rehearsals of Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2024, we asked our readers to vote across two polls: Who should win Semi-Final 1? and Who should qualify from Semi-Final 1? After counting more than 40,000 votes, the results are in….

Semi-Final 1 poll results: Croatia is our readers’ favourite to win ahead of rehearsals

In line with the betting odds, Croatia’s Baby Lasagna has come out on top — and by some distance. He earned 4,441 votes — or nearly a quarter of all those cast. That put him well ahead of Lithuania’s Silvester Belt, who earned around 2,000 votes.

  1. 🇭🇷 Croatia 23.51% 4,441 votes
  2. 🇱🇹 Lithuania 10.53% 1,989
  3. 🇺🇦 Ukraine 9.48% 1,791
  4. 🇷🇸 Serbia 8.85% 1,672

Who do you want to qualify from Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2024?

Of course, winning the semi-final isn’t of huge importance. What matters is qualifying for the final where everything can change. Our readers diverge from the bookies in two keys ways. In our poll, Slovenia’s Raiven and Portugal’s Iolanda make it through. Finland’s Windows95man and Australia’s Electric Fields do not.

  1. 🇭🇷 Croatia 11.47% 2,493
  2. 🇺🇦 Ukraine 9.46% 2,055
  3. 🇱🇹 Lithuania 9.42% 2,047
  4. 🇷🇸 Serbia 8.66% 1,881
  5. 🇸🇮 Slovenia 8.11% 1,763
  6. 🇵🇹 Portugal 6.97% 1,514
  7. 🇨🇾 Cyprus 6.77% 1,470
  8. 🇵🇱 Poland 6.72% 1,460
  9. 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 6.56% 1,426
  10. 🇮🇪 Ireland 6.55% 1,424
  11. 🇫🇮 Finland 5.60% 1,217
  12. 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan 4.56% 991
  13. 🇦🇺 Australia 4.54% 986
  14. 🇲🇩 Moldova 2.46% 534
  15. 🇮🇸 Iceland 2.14% 465

the fusion of this, hmm it is a choice indeed, but luckily for BL i love a good bit of cheesiness in the staging, outfit etc so i give him benefit of the doubt and i’ll cheer for him, and if this is a tune which makes young people from the balkans emotional, well that is quite lovely, how rim tim tagi dim can become an balkan anthem same how stefania is a sort of anthem now in ukraine for military

Early today I was looking at the european map of countries taking part to ESC 2024 and it made me really sad (once again). Seeing eastern Europe giving up on the contest is terrifying me. I can’t consider ESC as a european party when more than half of eastern Europe doesn’t participate anymore. For this reason, even though Croatia is far from being my favorite, I’m thinking that a victory for Baby Lasagna could bring back interest in the contest for the balkan countries. Switzerland and Italy are my favorite so I’m voting for them but I’m definitely voting for… Read more »

Well those countries never tried to promote the contest to their audiences, and the LGBTQ+ friendly enviroment seems to be too much for them too, then there’s lack of money.

Bulgaria for instance just bought their entries 2016 forward, with little to no effort to even reach audiences at home, ran out of money and then just said that “They never even cared about Eurovision” and left.

Adding this: The contest was extremly uninteresting in western Europe as people saw it being dated and such, and since then a lot of countries have put much more effort in their entries. It’s gaining popularity more and more each year, songs get millions of listeners and it’s seen interesting and current once again.

I understand that but we have to find a way to maintain the contest quality while raising the interest of eastern Europe for the contest and make them come back. Eurovision will go nowhere if everyone withdraw from it.

Number one thing is to atleast broadcast the contest, but I haven’t seen much effort in that, which is sad. Can’t get people interested in Eurovision, without showing what it is.

Don’t get your hopes too high, Tino! I seriously doubt Croatia will win. My number 1 grudge with Eurovision is this: the contest is too extravagant, too high-tech, too expensive, too whatever. Thus, only well-off countries can afford to host it. Thus, only well-off countries make that extra effort to try to win it. Thus, every year only a few countries have a real chance of winning the contest. Even some well-off countries aren’t very keen on winning. Look at Germany & Switzerland, for instance. Participating from the beginning and only have 2 victories. And Belgium only has 1. The… Read more »

“only well-off countries make that extra effort to try to win it” I need to develop on this. This statement isn’t even true. There is a bias from the EBU towards certain countries. Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria & Romania did make that extra effort to try to win it. When they lost their innocence. When they finally realized it would take them decades before they would be granted the possibility to win, they decided to quit. For Slovakia on the other hand, it was such an uphill battle to even qualify that they wouldn’t be bothered with participating. And I… Read more »

Actually the uk and Germany are both doubtful after this year. The uks broadcaster bbc have lost their funding rights of charging British people a licence fee to watch their Channel and have said Eurovision is on their list of savings potential they need to make. Viewing figures have plunged in Germany and the costs of them showing the show in Germany are no longer financially viable.

I don’t think Eastern Europe has given up on eurovision. It’s mostly the cost of living crises and tv broadcasters finances that have stopped them from entering not apathy with the contest. They will be back when things stabilise. Even Bosnia and herzogavina want to return but are unable to do so at the moment because of very tight finances of the broadcaster.

Finland sometimes brings really good music. But for every good song they bring, they then try to numb us by releasing a string of 3 or 4 songs that are totally worthless. Like Darude, one of Eurovision’s all-time worst songs & probably the degree 0 in music. Or like this year… No Rules! is so tasteless, it’s actually very daring that they have selected it.

I feel the same about Luxembourg; I don’t think the song deserves to qualify but I want their comeback to not be a complete disaster. Cyprus will do better with the public than it has with ESCStans. I’d be surprised if they don’t qualify. I could happily lose Serbia this year and I suspect that, if this Top 10 is wrong, it will be either Serbia or Portugal who NQ. I’ll send a few votes Azerbaijan’s way but I think that song is too classy for this contest.
