Malta’s Sarah Bonnici performed a blindfolded flip assisted by two dancers. Switzerland’s Nemo balanced on what appeared to be a satellite dish. And Norway’s Gåte turned the stage into a creepy Nordic forest — before flooding it. But in the end only 10 of the 16 competing acts could qualify for the grand final on Saturday.

Never ever before did I watch such a performance opening choreo wise, plus the beautiful lyrics. Eden was absolutely sensational throughout the whole performance. Never ever before did I watch dancers that emanated so much calm, confidence, so much softness and sweetness, and showed so much skill and passion in their performance. And I never watched such an understated elegance and power before throughout an artistic performance. Thank you so so so much everyone. I wish you the best of every good thing in the GF!

Just a note about the RAI-affair: note that Switzerland got announced 8th yesterday, just like Croatia in SF1 and many examples of televote winners in the past. That means Nemo may have won the televote. That being said, “voti-leak” may show either a local fenomenon with low correlation or an error. Anyway, it doesn’t seem relatable to the rest of the countries. Knowing RAI well it even could be propaganda aiming people to vote more at the GF. I might say, also, that since I’ve been reading some italian press articles and social network posts and comments, that first place… Read more »

This Eurovision will be rembered as one of the most controversial of the history. The change in rules, the Isr@el affair. The RAI leak. Ukraine in the 2nd position and Italy in the 15th. Christer Bjorkman doing Christer Bjorkman. Martin Osterdahl doing Martin Osterdahl. SVT doing SVT (as always). EBU doing EBU. And Petra Mede monumental as always who admits candidly Sweden rules eurovision and sings about it trolling us all, and especially Kaarja. Agree with almost everything apart from the statment EBU doing EBU. It’s rather SVT being EBU (SVT doing EBU could have a slightly different connotation). 🙂 But would also be quite true. As for the comment regarding the show – didn’t watch it (not watching another Melodifestivalen – the Euroversion).

Yes. You are right. SVT doing EBU since a lot of time. And EBU, and the reference group, accepting it. I would like to attend a reference group meeting to see how it works. Hopefully this is last year RAI participates. Better to leave such corrupted organism to someone else. I believe the reference group should be selected by a draw. With obly the previous and the current broadcasters but in minority.

Ngl, what I love most about ESC is looking forward to seeing what the countries that take part of it bring to the table each year, many hits and songs that I love have come out of the contest.
Sadly, SVT has a lot of leverage within the reference group and always comes up with some BS that impacts the contest negatively, to the point part of the contest became a Swedish circlejerk. This year they went too far with their “brilliant” ideas, so I get it if countries pull out en masse in the coming years 🙁

Reportedly, VRT (public broadcaster from Belgium) did not show Israel’s performance but put a black card with a message. I am not sure if that is valid or fake news. Can anyone verify?

Isn’t that (if true) a reason for EBU to ban the broadcaster from next year?

Regarding the “RAI leaks” there is an interesting theory. As Italy performed after Estonia (no. 13) there some speculations that by voting for no. 14 many in Italy thought they were voting for Italy. Could this be an explanation? Among common Italians the ESC is not that known like in other countries, so is this maybe a hint what happend? What do you think?

Eurogambler

That’s absolutely not going to close this gap, especially if the votes are state funded. If more than 10 participants are missing then the final will either have to be abandoned or it will be considered a total farce and Martin will be forced to step down

Samo
Samo
Reply to  Eurogambler

Because as we saw from the Italian televote and also by the reaction in the arena last night, the calls for boycotts come from a very loud minority but most people are on Israel’s side and against the bullying. I’m confident that some artists who tried to score points with a bit of old fashioned antisemitism are already regretting it.

Next year’s Eurovision will be 95% normal show even if Israel wins. Sure, a country or two may drop out, and haters are gonna hate even harder, but it will be business as usual for most of us.

Latvia qualifying for the first time after 6 years against all odds and with one of the least “televoting friendly” songs was the best moment of yesterday’s semi and a sign that the public can appreciate a well performed ballad (even if it qualified at 10th place). A bit sad for Czechia – Aiko was excellent yesterday but the song wasn’t strong enough after all. Many of us saw Belgium’s failure coming – Mustii’s performance was really poor unfortunately. Least “televoting friendly” songs? Well, I voted for it yesterday (plus two other countries) because I genuinely enjoyed it! Dons’ emotion in the end was really moving. Most discussed songs “in the bubble” do not always perform well, and vice versa obviously! But all in all you’re right: the public can appreciate a well performed ballad! (Note: I live miles away from Latvia with no connection at all with the country).

There’s a deeply rooted belief among fandom that public doesn’t like ballads – I put “televoting friendly” in brackets exactly because I don’t agree. Don’t you guys think it’s shady that Belgium didn’t qualify? I mean the performance was kinda good. On X I read that he had the word “peace” written on his arm, and right before the broadcast on Belgian tv there was also a protest against Israel by members of VRT (the Flemish broadcaster)…

What? He was vocally very weak, it was probably the weakest vocal we heard in the entire show. Yes, Joost Klein or Windowsman95 are even worse, but they don’t sing a difficult and challenging song. Why do you sing a song that you’re not able to sing? Make it less difficult then, change the keys?

Kinda good? Did you watch the same performance? It was by far the worst performance of the evening, killing off the chances of a very good song.

Belgium was always 50:50. It got a rather unfortunate position in the running order being overshadowed by two much more powerful songs. And if he didn’t even sing well (I didn’t watch the TV feed yet, he sounded alright in the arena), I can absolutely see how he didn’t qualify.

As the last year, I arrive to may without listening to any of the songs of ESC (exceptions Sweden and Italy). I didn’t even look at the odds or rehearsals. What I think about SF2 songs at first glance: My qualifiers: 1 – Switzerland: liked this, the choreo and stage are so simple yet so effective. Surely in my final top 10 (maybe 5?). 2 – Greece: the only dance-song that made me dance at home, love the greek elements in the track. Not a huge fan of the tik-tok cameo but ok. 3 – Norway: Norway never disappoints me.… Read more »

I don’t know what booing you refer to, I was in the arena and it’s definitely not something that has happened. There were few attempts that were immediately drowned out by others cheering for her.

Also, Polina was in Vienna where ÖBB had an antibooing technology in place, whereas SVT distributes the feed “as it is”.

well the cheers made the boo attempts noticeable from TV, in fact that was what I heard:

-little boo
-“not-so-little” cheer

All over the song.

Streisand effect, I noticed Israel was booed bcs of the cheers.

It’s very interesting how the producers put Finland between Serbia and Portugal. Probably the weirdest choice in the running order.

But don’t forget voting starts at the very beginning of the performances, not the end like last year so he could still pick up some points, and don’t forget the diaspora voting. Also, if you’re really concerned about Lithuania final placing, you can do something about it by voting for it! I plan to give Lithuania a large amount of my votes tomorrow when the rest of the world voting opens so that I could try to get Lithuania a boost.

He got a very good position given that he drew first half. I expected that they would like to separate him from Sweden, since both songs are in the same genre but I didn’t expect a place after #9, since some of the other favourites that drew first half (Greece, Ireland, or even UK) would more likely been favoured by the producers.

I just got a fun idea in order to avoid Saturday ending up in a trainwreck: Remove the televoting completely. Let it be France winning with the juries, I don’t care. I just don’t want to see the one and only thing I grew up watching that made me listen to music every year for about 5 months (I’m not really a music enjoyer apart from this contest but I absolutely love Eurovision for everything it has to offer musically), being ridiculed anymore. It hurts to see the contest crumble before its own acts that led it to the mocked… Read more »

I don’t think Israel will win. Sure they will get more televoting points than many would expect (and like) but the producers giving them the 6th slot seems like an effort to counterbalance the effect of strategic pro-Israeli voting.

France should win, it has the best song the best voice, and the best performance. But of course it won’t. People gave an excuse of a pandemic and wanted an upbeat song to win (Italy) over France in 2021, what’s your excuse now?

It’s really hard for me to believe in that theory, honestly. People who vote for the country regardless of the song, they always do that no matter what. All the others will probably wait until the end to pick wisely, or vote throughout the night in those that really stand out.

In 2010 and 2011, the previous years with voting all night, the winners in both years still came from later in the running order.

This is not true. This method has been used before (in the late 00s if I remember well) and made no difference whatsoever. It was proven that most televoters vote after all songs are performed anyway.

PS. Correction, it was 2010 and 2011 like jercle pointed out above. Still the winners performed 22nd and 19th respectively. In 2010 only 2 of the Top 10 performed in the first 10 places, although this was up to 5/10 in 2011 with 4 of the first 10 performing acts getting a Top 10 in televoting alone.

To be completely honest, the results seemed perfectly logical to me, even predicted Belgium NQ since Mustii’s momentum was lost since the pre-parties. The only shock of the night was Latvia qualifying instead of the likes of Malta or San Marino, since litwrally NOBODY could have oredicted that Dons was still in the game after the recap. But, even though I’m sad for Megara being left out, I’m still really happy for Dons breaking Latvia’s NQ streak since his song was honest and touching. I got 9/10 of my qualifiers in the Grand Final. Only missed San Marino. A really… Read more »
