It’s the fourth day of Wiwi’s hunt to find Eurovision’s Artist of the Millennium. Let’s briefly review the contenders from the 2003 contest in Riga. It was one of the closest finals ever, with Turkey, Belgium and Russia scoring 167, 165 and 164 points, respectively. The competition was marred by scandal when it emerged that the Irish televote could not be counted due to technical difficulties. As a result, a professional jury in Ireland scored contestants—and they gave Russia’s T.A.T.U. no points, despite the fact the group had a number one single in Ireland at the time. Russia petitioned the results, but to no avail.
First Place: Turkey’s Sertab Erener with “Everyway That I Can.†It’s non-stop attitude from the last Turk to win Eurovision. She shimmies and shakes while tied up in lace.
Second Place: Belgium’s Urban Trad with “Sanomi.” It’s all spiritual and new-age. It’ll probably be playing at Enya’s funeral.
Third Place: Russia’s T.A.T.U. with “Ne Ver, Ne Boisya, Ne Prosi.†Screeching cats (but not lesbians, despite the rumors). Wiwi’s friends at the House of Eurovision awarded them the 2002 Barbara Dex Prize as the worst dressed contestants for wearing white t-shirts painted with the number 1.
