Last week, as the number of deaths related to swine flu climbed above 30 in the Ukraine, members of the Ukrainian parliament called on Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to ‘come to her senses’ and cancel Junior Eurovision. Yulia decided that the show had to go on. The government had already poured $2 million into the event, and with presidential elections just around the corner, Yulia didn’t want to miss an opportunity for some good photo ops with children. Earlier this week Tymoshenko hosted the opening gala, where all 13 contestants (and countless backup dancers) performed their numbers. Tymoshenko didn’t exactly let her hair down (do you know how long it takes to sculpt those golden plaits?), but she did get down on some borscht and garlic rolls with the European Broadcasting Union.
