Will Lena finish last at Eurovision 2011?

This weekend 79% of German viewers chose “Taken by a Stranger” for Lena Meyer-Landrut to sing at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.  Although the song proved a hit with the German public, Vebooboo is skeptical it will impress the rest of the continent in May.

The song takes a full 90 seconds to gear up, and in a three minute song that feels like an eternity. That reminds the listener that Lena has absolutely no stage presence. Her awkwardness came off as quirky with Satellite. But with “Taken By a Stranger” she just comes off as dull.

In choosing Lena to defend her title, the German ESC organiser follows the example of the very first ESC winner, Miss Lys Assia from Switzerland.
Unfortunately someone forgot to tell them that Miss Assia finished second-to-last that year.  Based on what Vebooboo has seen and heard so far, history may very well repeat itself.

well, lena’s last year;s song was the most terrible of all songs, but she won.we know why-it is time that eurovision takes place in western europe, after years and years in east.if we look the quality of songs, i think that serbia has pretty much chances.but is is impossible to win because it has already won…

Here’s what I think: Lena won because of her next-door-girl charm and naturality. She was the kind of girl you can take out for pizza, and that was fresh and good. (Although she wasn’t my favorite at all)  But that kind of things started fading out the very moment she won, because she started becoming a star. Now that she’s big, she can’t pass as a regular girl again. It’s not only that the trick won’t work twice, but that she can’t pull it twice. So, I honestly believe she would have to reinvent herself, to leart how to be… Read more »

Last year the bookies also said that slovakia’s kristina would win, and she finished next-to-last in her semi-final. bookies should stick to sports, not eurovision. They’re only saying that Lena will do well because they want people to lose a lot of money on her. It’s a classic strategy. Pick a dud, and others follow…

Most of the songs of this year’s contest are pretty average, not to say boring. “Taken by a stranger” is special and catching. Even if Lena does not win at least she will make a clear statement against boring Eurovision formulas. “Push forward”, Germany’s second choice, would have been a safer option but is not special enough.  “All or nothing” with “Taken”. Let’s see… I remain pretty optimistic about this song and believe that it will reach top five at least.

Well you might not like it, but a lot of people clearly do. It won with a huge majority and is the current #1 on iTunes Germany. Germany is the bookies current odds favorite, not to come last, but to win!

Maybe I should tell you Lys Assia did not get discouraged and finished second the year after. Anyway, that was half a century ago and jury only vote back then. This year it’s the duty of Germany to be a good host and just like Norway they might try just try to avoid to win two times in a row. After all hosting is expensive and a burden for every broadcaster.
