Sweden, Loreen, 1

SVT, Sweden’s state broadcaster, has revealed that it will alter Loreen’s performance in Baku significantly due to the differing rules between Melodifestivalen and Eurovision. At Melodifestivalen, artists can pre-record back-up vocals. That allowed Loreen to take centre stage in Stockholm and do all the singing herself. In Baku, she will rely on three veteran back-up singers to carry the refrain while she focuses on her kick-ass dance moves. But while Loreen is dancing, Christer Bjorkman—the head of the Swedish delegation—intends to hide the back-up singers completely.

It kind of reminds me of Jedward’s back-up singers last year (that’s right, they had two of them!).

“Our staging reduces the possibility to hide the back-up singers, so we will just have to make them as invisible as we can,” Bjorkman told SVT. “Our ambition is that they shouldn’t be seen, because they don’t belong there. We want to create that little own world for Loreen.” Um, did Christer just move to Sweden from a slave plantation? Because he sure sounds like a master to me.

Despite all of these changes ahead of Baku, one thing will stay the same. Big hunky dancer Ausben Jordan will still pick up Loreen and make all you chocolate lovers out there eager for some more…We is hungry, y’all!

Loreena’s chances of a win are really high IMO. Shes got an amazing voice and Euphoria is an incredible song. A proper club stomper. Shes got perfect voice for vocal trance 🙂

But: I don’t understand these decisions! Why do they want to hide the backup singers? Backup vocals are so important in this song surely they could let the poor backup vocalists get some recognition too and let them enjoy the ESC experience!

Opps, I mean’t AS Eurovision. I most sincerly hope that recorded backing vocals are not allowed at Eurovision.

Why can’t Melodifestivalen have the sames rules at Eurovision? It would save them so much drama.

Honestly, I’m not impressed by that. I realize (thanks to Eric Saade’s not-so-subtle objections to the no-playback rule) that it’s hard to sing AND dance well at the same time. Sweden and Russia both had elaborate dance routines and vocals suffered despite backup singers. So did a bunch of other groups and I have to say, I didn’t think it was very classy when the delegation hid them. The UK, despite Blue being a famous band, had those two guys off to the side. That was pretty gutsy of them. Denmark’s (another established boyband) were hidden, though we did see… Read more »
