Last night the Wiwi Jury, our international panel of music un-professionals—flew to Barcelona to review Pastora Soler’s Eurovision entry “Quédate conmigo.” That means “stay with me.” After hearing her song, did we actually want to do that? Read on to find out. And then let us know whether you think Pastora could find work as a Princess Eugenie look-a-like.

Wiwi: Can I start by sending a shout out to Spain’s Eurovision 2011 contestant Lucia Perez? I’m still dancing to your song “They Can’t Take the Fun Away From Me.” Oh no they can’t! But plenty of folks are trying, including Miss Pastora Soler. She does her best to kill any and all joy with her number “Quédate conmigo.” I get that she has a beautiful voice. I get that this song builds to a nice climax. And I get that she’s already an established artist with a massive following. But for some reason I am just not feeling this song. It may be because Pastora looks uncomfortable singing it. She seems to vacillate between giving birth and having to use the toilet really, really bad.

Score: 5/10

Vebooboo: There has been a lot of hype about this song, which completely baffled me at first but now I get. It’s an easily graspable slow song that just keeps building, and I like consistency! I wish Spain had chosen the faster-paced option they had, but I do wish this one the best of luck in Baku and hope it lands in the Top 15.

Score: 6/10

Meows Kitty: This is a very powerful ballad with a catchy chorus but it looks as though she’s in pain during the majority of the song, not sure whether she’s feeling the emotion, or just can’t hit those high notes…

Score: 6/10

Deban: Spain’s involvement in the Eurovision Song Contest can be summed up in the translation of this song’s refrain “I know I don’t deserve more, But if I don’t have it here, I can’t live, Stay with me, don’t go.”

The lyrical composition of this song is masochistic. Spain’s ranking and its undying passion in The ESC isn’t dissimilar. That said, I love this song. Pastora Soler is a first-class singer with a great vocal range. She sings with conviction, and wears the pain that’s needed to make her performance believable. A professional star with 11 successful albums to her name, Soler has been in the music business for decades. She was the obvious choice when Spain’s national broadcaster needed to put a big name forward for Baku. “Quedate Conmigo” won the national vote out of a choice of four songs.

Unfortunately, Spain isn’t going to win. It may not even feature in the top 10. However, this credible entry shouldn’t be dismissed as a lightweight effort. It is a perfect pop number packed with all the key ingredients of a successful hit.

Score: 8.5/10

The Wiwi Jury Verdict: 6.38/10

I can’t wait to listen this is a large scenery with the proper sound system.
I’m a sound engineer working for important studio and, trust me, I see some potential here.
For me, it’s a potential winner with Germany, Sweden, Italy, Hungary and Denmark.

Vamos Pastora tu puedes!!! Cierra Los ojos, siente lo que cantas y no te dejes impresionar por la multitud que the rodea. Saca see duende andaluz que enamora. A por todas!

Quite pity cause the song is beautiful itself, but she looks very uncomfortable, the dress is too tied maybe, the shoes are one size bigger so even a professional singer as Pastora can’t do miracles. It is also that she looks testing the notes and making a quick choice for the next one…Hope they make a review before the last show…

It’s taken 41 song but I agree with Deban about this one.

Close your eyes and just listen. It’s actually a really beautiful song. Spain hasn’t done very well recently and it would be really nice to see this at least in the top 10.

Ole!

I liken the song to stepping into a well-tuned luxury car. One is coccooned in a complex of vibration and engine tones as it accelerates. And then it keeps on accelerating until, at what must be top speed, the road vanishes, and you are in free fall through empty space. After a moment, jet thrusters fire up and you really take off. It’s not fancy or catchy, but it is very carefully crafted and delivered for maximum effect. I suspect that televoters who switch off in the first seconds will find themselves unexpectedly drawn back in long before the climax.… Read more »
