Vebooboo: Ukraine is the land of the Orange Revolution, but I was super pleased to see the fashion gods followed the most sacred of staging rules — put a black woman in a white dress, and you’ve got a winner. From the first few seconds of today’s second rehearsal, Gaitana made it clear that she is in Baku to compete. She busts out on the stage with a dramatic LED backdrop and proceeds to belt out her vocals like Whitney Houston, while Ukrainian trumpet players and dancers add to the colourful, techno-induced background. Few women of color have advanced past the semi-finals in the history of Eurovision, but if Gaitana doesn’t make it on Thursday, then I don’t know who the hell will. Girl can sing, and girl can dance. Girl has spunk, and that’s what we love here at wiwibloggs.com. Gaitaina, you can be our guest any night of the week — my IKEA couch is waiting for you to stop on by!
Wiwi: When you listen to her song without seeing the staging it sounds like one really, really long chorus. There’s not exactly depth or development or trajectory. But throw in some LED lights, some virtual dancers, and a black beauty in a snow white gown and you have a recipe for success! Gaitana belts it out like a dormant volcano waking from its sleep—and I’m ready to dive in to that lava! The choreography—love the Cossack aerobics class in the background—wares me out, and I can’t get enough.
