Albania, Rona Nishliu, 2

Albania’s Rona Nishliu wowed the Wiwi Jury with her vocal chords. Now she’s wowed us with her brain. This morning, during our interview with her at Eurovision in Concert, she showed that the depth of her song “Suus” reflects the depth of her intelligence. GIRLFRIEND IS SMART! She tells us that her official video reflects the “absurdities of life through abstract art.” And we learn that “Suus”—that means “personal” in Latin—carries the weight of a difficult experience from her own life. We don’t know the specifics, but it’s a pain that resonates with us—and, we hope, all of Europe, too. Have a listen.

Decided to listen to her song (both original and English version) as being intrigued by Deban’s mark and comments. While my music skills are close to zero, I do see this as a challenge to qualify even in the final. Only juries can help, as most of televoters won’t get it. I just think she’s a great singer singing an average song. I did like for example Italy’s entry last year, but this one is not stellar in my opinion…stellar might be her voice, but that’s not enough…

You guys are doing great. The artists seem really comfortable with you and willing to be themselves — and making a very good impression as a result.

I was a little nervous about hearing “Suus” in English, but the re-interpretation as jazz expands further on her artistry as well as the depth of the song.
