On Monday, after watching an amazing first semi-final run-through, Wiwi, Vebooboo and Meows Kitty literally pushed their way past other journalists to get a taxi to the Germany party. Honoring their homeland, the German delegation staged it at a German bar in the centre of Baku.

Austerity reared its head. The Israeli party on Sunday night was grandiose, with LED screens and professional cameramen. The German affair screamed Angela Merkel. Even though they had a budget—think sticky floors and no LED backdrops—the Germans did provide free beer. The atmosphere was ruul ruul cozy, and the stars were way more accessible. Of course, given how tiny the space was they had little choice but to rub shoulders with the plebs of Eurovision Nation.

Roman Lob opened the evening by singing his song “Standing Still.” Obviously he got a warm reception, but I think a lot of that had to do with the drool coming out of most of the audience members’ mouths as they stared at his taut body. After Roman performed, Nina Zilli shook her ass to “boom, boom, boom.” As you can see in the video, this girl knows how to move her little booty and has a beautiful smile. She didn’t stay long at the party, but she made her presence count, and that’s what matters most. Apologies for the dodgy lighting and focus. But you can hear her sing, so don’t hate.

Joan Franka, on the other hand, was a woman of the people. She sang FOUR songs for us sans feathered headdress. Yes, FOUR! And she stuck around for quite a while interacting with fans and dancing around with friends. We really liked her attitude, her voice, and most importantly her spirit. (She was kind enough to take the photo at the top of this post with us). A huge hug goes to the Dutch lady, and we hope to see her make the Final! It’s about damn time the Netherlands had something to be proud of on the Eurovision front!

Now, as always there was a bit of drama. Gaitana was due to perform. She was on the original invite sent out by the German delegation. She was even seen in the bar (it’s hard to miss a woman with breasts the size of Estonia). But for some reason, our favorite singer of Congolese descent did not sing. Now, we LOVE Gaitana, don’t get me wrong, but this is the second time she has disappointed us. She also canceled her appearance at Eurovision in Concert in Amsterdam. Not cute. Not cute at all. Three strikes and you’re out, Gaitana.

Another disappointment was Kurt Calleja. Dude didn’t even bother to show up because apparently the smoke in the bar would hurt his vocal chords. Um, all we can say is that you only need to protect things if they are valuable and will be used a lot. Kurt will only be singing once on stage at ESC…he does not need to preserve himself for Saturday.

After these two slight disappointments, we headed over to Euroclub. One of the major drawbacks of this year’s location is that the performances don’t start until midnight local time. So all the dudes who went to the second dress rehearsal were still at the Crystal Hall. As a result, at 1am the Euroclub was completely empty. Take a look at the video below, and you will see that Meows Kitty and Vebooboo literally had the enormous ex-Soviet style dancefloor to themselves. It was a memorable dance, but not the type of fun we wanted to have tonight.

But don’t worry, people, there’s always tomorrow…

Love and kisses,

The Wiwibloggs Team 🙂
