Eldar Gasimov—one-half of the Azerbaijani duo that won Eurovsion 2011—is stepping out on his own. The “Running Scared” singer just released a new music video for his first solo single “I’m Free.” And yes, he is referring to himself with that title.
“I want to move from the image of ‘a-one-hit-artist’ as it often happens to the winners of various music contests,” he said in a statement sent to WiwiBloggs.Com. “Moreover, since the hit ‘Running Scared’ was performed as a duet, it is only half mine. There are so many things I want to tell my audience as a solo artist.”
Team Wiwi were pleasantly surprised by Eldar’s first solo video and song. He’s cast off the bashful, doe-eyed look from Düsseldorf and embraces his wild side. In the past his team strived to make him look a bit more macho—cue the beard he grew for Eurovision 2011. But in the video they let him play with his androgyny and let loose. The dance sequence where he twirls his arms alongside two shirtless dancers is slightly camp, and finally shows the personality we’ve wanted to see for a long time.
