When Anouk confirmed that she’ll be representing the Netherlands at Eurovision 2013, the Googleplex nearly exploded. Wiwi was among those frantically searching for info about the much-hyped Dutch singer, who all of Holland is hoping can bring Amsterdam some much-needed love and a few sets of douze points. Wiwi is pleased to confirm that Anouk is edgy and original and a welcome change of pace from the likes of the Toppers and Sieneke.

The most popular female rock singer in Holland, Anouk is definitely an independent woman. She’s got four kids from two men—the first three from her ex-husband, the fourth from a relationship with Dutch rapper and ex-boyfriend Robert Coenen.

Anouk’s second single, “Nobody’s Wife,” suggests she knew she wasn’t cut out for marriage. Released in 1997, it’s all about female emancipation. “I’m gonna spread my wings…I’ll never be nobody’s wife.” Well, after the divorce she won’t be, anyway. The video is heavy on Anouk’s mouth. If the camera zooms in any more you’ll see her lunch. The song topped the Belgian and Dutch charts for several weeks.

Anouk’s second album included the single “R U Kiddin’ Me.” Anouk opens with a killer guitar riff before moaning about how her dude has left her for another woman. She channels crackhead in the video, which probably flicks at the madness of breaking up. “How can an angel break my heart?” she says. “He said, ‘We can still be friends.’ Are you kidding me?” She wants it all or nothing at all, y’all.

Anouk has an Adele-like quality in “Three Days In a Row.” Its a jazzy ballad about heartbreak. It comes from her sixth album. We know that from Wikipedia. But we also know that from Anouk’s face. She clearly had pocketed some major bling by this point, beause she is looking fit! Personal trainer? Make-up artist? Stylist? Regardless of who made her look like this, he/she did a good job. The song peaked at the top of the Dutch Top 40 in 2009.

Anouk has tons of other songs, including “Girl,” “Lost,” I Don’t Wanna Hurt,” “Woman,” and “Michel.” Which is your favorite? And do y’all have any gossip on what Anouk will sing in 2013? Should she go hardcore rock, or give Eurovision listeners something mellow like “Three Days In a Row?”

If she goes the way of Euro-pop then she will be going back on her style and that would be a huge mistake. It would be nice to see Netherlands back in the final with a good strong song. In recent years I have cringed at their efforts, although Joan was a guilty pleasure of mine. It would be nice to see Edsilia Rombley back one year with a great power ballad though. I think she would belt her way into the upper regions of the score board with that. But a nice rock ballad would be amazing from Anouk.… Read more »

She does an awesome ballad called Lost. If she sends a song like Lost to Eurovision she will do well.
