Grab your painkillers and your thickest pair of earplugs: Azerbaijan’s Milli Secim Turu has begun!

Our favorite part of Azerbaijan’s national selection takes place during the heats when contestants have to cover popular Eurovision songs. It’s always a train wreck. The first two qualifiers haven’t disappointed. In week one Vugar Muradov covered Giorgos Alkaios and Friends’ “Opa!” (Greece, Eurovision 2010). The vocals didn’t exactly stack up to the original, and Vugar decided to cast off the homoerotic staging of the original act by only using female back-up dancers.

In the second week, Ravana Aliyeva took on Maria’s “Hold On Be Strong” (Norway, Eurovision 2008). Ravana actually has a good voice. It’s just her enunciation and dress that let her down.

Well worth seeing Avantaj take on “This is Our Night.” Just in case, y’know, they don’t win a place on this page. ;p
