Last summer I got a scoop from Blue during an interview at Blackpool Pride. The boys told me to expect 10 singles on a 10-track album. Fast forward to today and we know that their single “Hurt Lovers” will be released in Germany on 4 January, and shortly after that in other territories. They’re hoping the track will launch a major comeback.

In June 2012 the band premiered  “Hurt Lovers” during a concert in China. In an interview shortly after the concert, the band claimed that it was one of the first tracks they recorded after re-uniting, and that it was an obvious choice for their comeback single. The band co-wrote the track with Jez Ashurst, David Jost, Martin Schmidt and Alexander Zuckowski. It went down a treat across Asia. The producers of the film Schluss Macher even asked to use it as the official theme for the movie.

“Hurt Lovers” weaves a tale of love gone wrong, whilst offering a message of hope and endurance. Unlike the fiasco in Dusseldorf where Blue essentially pitched themselves as four solo artists, the vibe on this track is harmonious. No one is fighting for the microphone. The harmonies blend beautifully, and Lee Ryan elevates the mood by sprinkling the right dose of his wailing falsetto on the track. Although “Hurt Lovers” isn’t as catchy as some of their previous hits, it is definitely a step in the right direction for a band on the up.
